Chapter 140
The young nurse finally got to a door. Sofia, who had all along been tailing behind, hoped she had opened the right door this time. Mr. John, Ethan's uncle had been guarding the name of the hospital he had taken Ethan too so the media wouldn't just troop in. Sofia had tried to reach out to him but the man was too stubborn so tailing after a nurse was what her love for Ethan had reduced her to.
She thought the nurse was too sluggish for her liking but she had no join. She had heard the nurse speaking about a certain Mr. John and she was certain it was Ethan. Finally, she got to the right place. Sofia waited outside for the nurse to leave. And no sooner was the door opened to indicate the nurse's departure did Sofia fly in.
Ethan was laying helplessly on the white sheets. There were several things attached to him. He was on a drip. He was on oxygen. He had on only a blue hospital gown that revealed his thighs. Sofia was almost drawn to touch them. But she held herself.
"Miss! You shouldn't be here," the nurse scowled, making Sofia jump. She hadn't realized the damn nurse was back.
"The patient needs some rest," the nurse insisted.
But Sofia ignored her and rather stooped over the body on the bed. Ethan looked like death. He was pale. He had lost a lot of blood. Why did he try such a deadly stunt?
Sofia dropped the flowers on the bedside stool carefully. She had wanted to get some balloons as well but the waiting room was too busy for her —even though it wasn't really— and besides, she had had no time. She needed desperately to be beside the love of her life.
Sofia sat next to Ethan and watching him breath, all the while ignoring the glares of the fuming Nurse behind her.
Sofia began to caress the hairs around his forehead. She couldn't help but feel sorry. Not for him, but for herself. She felt sorry for not being there to stop him from doing something this foolish. And what, for that stupid girl? What if he had killed himself? She wouldn't have been able to live with the nightmare.
"Madam—" the young nurse tried to speak once again but Sofia raised her hand to the girl.
"I am his fiancée. Don't I deserve to be here? Please, I insist." The young nurse couldn't dispute Sofia's claims so she let it go. But kept fuming at the way Sofia was all over Ethan.
Nevertheless, she had resolved, dead or alive, Ariana would surely pay for this. It was either her happiness or Aria's. And Sofia would do anything to make sure Ariana never got hers.
"You shouldn't be doing that," the young nurse cautioned yet again.
"Shhh..." Sofia shushed and gave the nurse a face that almost said, 'you could've woken him up,' and at the same time 'you're the one who's constituting the nuisance not I'.
But it was too late. Ethan had turned a little to his side. Sofia thought it wasn't real but he did it again. This time she and the nurse saw it.
The young nurse rushed to get the doctor.
Ethan had been unconscious for more than forty eight hours now without any sign of regaining himself anytime soon. And now, he stirred and even coughed.
Sofia rushed to pour him a glass of water and he sat up to take it from her thinking it was one of the nurses. His eyes were still a little foggy as he tried to focus them on the moving woman. "How long have I been...?" his voice trailed.
"I don't know my love!" Sofia responded softly, gently rubbing his back.
"Aria?" he turned.
Much to his surprise he met the heartbroken look on Sofia's face. He couldn't even hide his disappointment. Not to Sofia at least. She deserved no niceness from him.
He had hoped Ariana was compelled by his Fear-Factor move to come show him some concern. Ethan was discomfited.
Sofia could only wonder how he could still have the guts to mention such a name after all that he'd been through?
"What are you doing here?" He almost jumped out of his sick bed in anger.
"What do you mean what am I doing here, Ethan?" she could hear herself gradually losing her sweetness. And her cool too. This was because he'd mistaken her for that goody-goody girl.
But she immediately realized that this was out of the way. Her mission here was to convince Ethan to come back to her, not to make the situation any worse. It was bad enough that he had made it icy-clear that he didn't want her or anything to do with her anymore.
However, with this attempted suicide saga, she could only hope that Ethan would come back to his senses and finally run into her arms. This was the best time to make her move...
"My love," Sofia toned down, "Can't you see what she's doing to you? It's obvious she doesn't care about you. I'm the only one who truly loves you Ethan. My whole world is incomplete without you. Where's she now that all these has happened? Probably celebrating with that pompous Lawson boy. A cheap whore that she is..."
"Don't you dare speak that way about her!" Ethan exploded.
"Oh come on my love, come off her. She's no good for you. She'll be the death of you the more you keep on trying," Sofia persuaded.
Ethan was already on his last nerve. He couldn't bare her anymore.
"Sofia, I don't want to see you again," Ethan muttered, as if finding the best way to put it, "Aria's the one who's good for me. Not you."
Sofia's heart was shattered. Her eyes turned glassy with tears ready to drizzle down. She didn't expect Ethan to still be this stubborn. Now of all times. His words were hurtful.
It broke Sofia a thousand times and her control nerve stood apart.
"What's so special about her? What's she got that I don't?" Sofia lamented.
"You'll never get it Sofia. Never."
They both sat strapped in silence for a split second. Only the computer in the room kept on beeping. But Sofia would never give up.
"Why?" Sofia asked again.
"Why what?"
"Why her? Why not me?"
Just then the doctor rushed in with the young nurse and another nurse.
"What's she doing in here, Jane?" The doctor frowned at the young nurse.
"She insisted, doctor," Jane apologized. "She said she was the patient's fiancée."
"That's a lie," Ethan objected. "This woman here is a liar!"
"Excuse me ma'am," the other nurse faced Sofia, "you gotta leave this room now. We don't want any trouble from the John's."
Sofia hesitated.
Meanwhile, the doctor had already begun checking the machine by the bedside. Taking down notes in his jotter.
"Ma'am?" the nurse threatened. This was like a last warning. She was ready to call out the security on Sofia.
Sofia was devastated. She looked defeated. She had nothing else to do. She stood up. Took a glance at Ethan and started walking towards the door.
Sofia was red with fury. It didn't require a therapist to see that. She wanted to scream out. Her whole life was tumbling down. All her efforts were fruitless. How could Ethan be saying these things?
First, her sister betrayed her. Now Ethan was making the whole matter difficult. She was definitely going to do something. She was going to do all she could to get Ariana out of the way. If Ariana was out of the way, Ethan will think clearly.
As she reached the door, Ethan spoke up. The words pierced like a dart through to the bullseye. "You can never be like her, Sofia. She doesn't hop from man to man like a slut that you are. Aria's special..."
