Aira collapsed to the ground, her legs giving out from the shock. Tears began to stream down her face as she stared at the carnage. On the other side, Frey’s ears were filled with the deafening screams of the people trapped inside the fallen Ferris wheel.
"IT HURTS! HELP ME! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!"
"MOMMY! IT HURTS! IT HURTS SO MUCH!"
"ARGH! MY LEG! SOMEONE HELP ME!"
"PLEASE! SAVE MY CHILD! ANYONE, PLEASE!"
Frey looked at the wreckage and felt like he was looking at a nightmare. The ground, which was just dusty gravel a moment ago, was now turning into a swamp of thick, red blood. It soaked into the dirt and flowed around the twisted metal beams.
Inside the crushed iron carriages, the situation was much worse. Because the wheel had fallen from such a height, the people inside had been slammed against the metal walls with terrifying force. Frey could see a man’s arm hanging out of like a broken window, it was bent in three different places, with white bone sticking out through the torn skin.
In another carriage, a young woman was trying to crawl out through a gap in the bent iron. However, the jagged edges of the metal were as sharp as razors. As she pushed herself forward, the metal sliced deep into her stomach. She didn't seem to feel it because of the shock, but as she fell onto the ground, her intestines began to spill out onto the dirt like slippery pink snakes. She took one look at her own body and went silent, her eyes rolling back as she died in the mud.
And The smell ... it was the heavy, metallic scent of fresh blood mixed with the smell of leaking oil and vomit. Frey saw a small child lying near the base of the wheel. The child wasn't screaming. He was just staring at his own legs, which had been flattened into a thin, red paste by a heavy support beam. The boy tried to move, but there was nothing left to move below his waist.
People who were still alive inside the carriages were clawing at the glass and metal, their fingernails breaking and bleeding as they tried to escape the suffocating heat of the wreckage. Some were trapped under the weight of others, their chests crushed so badly they could only make wet, gurgling sounds instead of words. Every second pass, it's feels like more blood sprayed out from the gaps.
Frey stood there, paralyzed. He saw a severed hand lying near his foot, still wearing a friendship bracelet that sparkled under the carnival lights. The contrast between the bright, happy lights and the pile of mangled meat in front of him made his head spin. The sound of hundreds of people shrieking in a blind panic make everything worse.
"My legs! I can't feel my legs!" a man screamed nearby, dragging his bloody torso through the dirt.
A mother ran past Frey, her face covered in blood that wasn't hers, screaming her child's name over and over until her voice broke. People were trampling each other, knocking down stalls, and tripping over bodies just to get away from the fallen wheel.
Aira’s breath was fast and short, ragged gasps. She looked like she was about to snap. Her eyes were fixed on the man torn in half, her body shaking so hard she couldn't stand.
“Think, Frey. Stay rational!” he roared at himself inside his mind. ]
Frey immediately stepped in front of Aira, using his broad shoulders to block her view of the carnage. He grabbed her face with both of his hands, forcing her to look only at his eyes.
"Aira! Look at me! Don't look anywhere else!" he commanded. His voice was firm and steady, a sharp contrast to the chaos around them. "Breathe. Just breathe. I am here. I am not going to let anything touch you. Do you hear me?"
Aira’s eyes slowly focused on him.
The sheer terror in them was heartbreaking, but Frey didn't flinch. He reached out and pulled her head against his chest, tucking her face into his jacket so she wouldn't have to see the bodies or the blood as they moved.
I have to lead us out. I am the only one who can, Frey thought, his mind turning cold and calculated despite his racing heart. Step by step, the only goaal is to survive.
"Keep your eyes closed," he shouted, his voice like an anchor in the storm. "I’ve got you. Just walk with me."
He gripped her hand with a strength that said he would never let go, and he began to push through the screaming crowd. He used his elbows and his back to shove aside panicking men who tried to trample them. He was like a rock in a river of madness. Every time someone bumped into them, Frey pulled Aira closer, shielding her body with his own.
As the crowd rushed toward the wreckage of the Ferris wheel, the path leading away became slightly clearer. Frey squinted through the dust, the smoke, and the flickering lights. His eyes locked onto two familiar silhouettes in the distance.
It was Anton and Luna. They were still trapped on the "Kora-Kora," the massive swinging pirate ship.
"I see them, Aira. We're almost there," Frey said, his mind already calculating the fastest route. Then, he let out Aira to stand by herself, Frey ran toward them while holding Aira hand, and screamed Anton’s name, but the loud music and the roar of the crowd drowned him out. He had no choice but to wait for the ride to stop.
While waiting, he looked at Aira. She was still just standing there, head down, shaking violently. Frey squeezed her hand tightly and pulled her closer to his side, trying to make her feel even a little bit safe.
But then, something went wrong.
The engine of the pirate ship ride suddenly grew much louder. The mechanical roar changed into a high-pitched scream, and the ship began to swing much faster than it was supposed to.
"W-what’s happening?" Frey whispered. He looked at the ride operators. They were panicking, frantically pushing buttons and pulling levers, but the machine wasn't responding.
The ship swung faster and faster until it did something impossible, it flipped a full 360 degrees, making a full circle. It didn't slow down, instead it kept spinning in a terrifying circle. The people on the ride screamed in pure terror until, until....
BOOM!
A massive explosion ripped through the engine room of the ride. A simple diesel engine shouldn't have exploded like that, but the blast was huge. Metal scraps and iron bolts were sent flying in every direction like bullets.
The explosion happened in a split second. A sharp piece of iron, about the size of two fingers and as long as a hand, flew through the air and stabbed into the head of a person standing right next to Frey. The metal went deep into their skull. The person didn't even have time to scream, they just dropped to the ground, dead instantly.
Everything happened so fast that Frey couldn't even move. He wasn't the only one. Dozens of people nearby were hit by the flying metal shards. But the worst part was the operators. Because they were standing right next to the engine, their bodies were completely shredded. There was nothing left of them but a messy pile of meat and bone.
Frey stood frozen, his eyes wide with fear. As the pirate ship continued to spin out of control. People were literally being thrown out of the ship. They flew through the air like ragdolls before smashing into the pavement or other stalls.
Finally, after a minutes of horror, the ship slowed down and stopped. The air was thick with the smell of smoke and burnt flesh. Aira sat back down on the ground, she had no strength left to stand.
Frey forced himself to think. He grabbed Aira’s shoulders. "Stay here. I’m going to check on Anton and Luna."
Frey rushed to the ride. Most of the people on the ship had fainted from the intense spinning. Anton, who was usually good with motion sickness, was still conscious but looked dizzy and pale. Luna was slumped over, unconscious.
"Anton! Get over here! Move before the crowd starts rushing in!" Frey shouted, snapping Anton back to reality.
Anton struggled to stand up, his legs wobbling like jelly. He was too shocked to say a single word. A few seconds later, Luna woke up, leaned over the side of the ship, and began to vomit uncontrollably.
"W-what just happened?" Luna asked, her voice trembling with confusion as she wiped vomit from her mouth.
"A disaster," Frey replied shortly. He stepped forward, grabbing Anton’s arm to help him stand up.
"Hu-huh?" Luna muttered, still dazed. Anton didn't say a word.
He leaned heavily on Frey. After Frey make sure he can stand up, Anton and Frey helped Luna climb down from the pirate ship. Frey kept a sharp eye on their surroundings, making sure no more flying metal or panicking people hit them.
"Anton? You feeling any better?" Frey asked once they reached the ground.
"Ugh... a little," Anton groaned, clutching his stomach.
"Then help Luna. I’ll take Aira. We need to get away from the center of this carnival and find a quiet, safe spot," Frey commanded. Anton nodded weakly and moved to Luna’s side to support her.
Frey rushed back to Aira, who was still paralyzed. He knelt in front of her, looking into her hollow eyes. "Can you walk yet?"
"I... I... I..." Aira stammered. She tried to push herself up, but her arms shook and her legs gave out instantly. She had no energy left in her body.
The noise behind them was getting louder. A massive wave of people was rushing toward the Kora-Kora wreckage to see what had happened, creating a new wave of chaos. Realizing they were about to be trampled or trapped, Frey didn't hesitate. He scooped Aira up into a princess carry, lifting her easily. He looked at Anton.
"Anton! Follow me! Now!"
Anton and Luna struggled to keep up as Frey led the way. He pushed through the edges of the crowd, his heart pounding against his ribs from the physical effort.
"E-eh? What are you doing?" Aira asked, her voice small and confused as she looked up at him.
"Taking you somewhere safe," Frey replied. He didn't look at her, his eyes were darting left and right, scanning for an opening in the sea of panicking people. Despite the horror around them, Aira felt a sudden flush of heat in her cheeks. Even behind the mask, Frey felt like the only person in the world she could rely on.
Finally, the four of them reached the edge of the Night Carnival, near the main entrance. It was relatively quiet here because most people were still distracted by the two horrific tragedies deeper inside.
Frey set Aira down gently next to Luna. He was breathing hard, his chest heaving. "Are you guys okay?" he asked, panting. But No one answered, The silence itself was the answer, they were all clearly not okay.
"Damn it... Anton, do you know where Teru and Fin are?"
Anton coughed, leaning against a lamp post. "Cough... damn, my head is still spinning. But I remember Fin saying he was going to the Glass Maze with Hana. As for Teru, I know where he went. I’ll go find him."
"Are you sure? Look at yourself, you can barely stand," Frey said, looking worriedly at his friend.
"I’ll be fine. You know me, I’ll force myself and everything will be okey. I can't just sit down and let my friend take care of everything," Anton insisted, gritting his teeth.
"Fine. I trust you Then I’m going to find Fin."
Frey turned to Aira and Luna. They were sitting side-by-side on the ground while holding hand, their faces pale and blank from the trauma. They looked like ghosts.
"You two stay here and rest. Don't move," Frey said firmly. "We’ll be back as soon as we find the others."
Frey looked at Anton, and the two friends shared a firm nod. Without another word, they split up and ran in opposite directions. Frey dashed back into the heart of the carnival, his body hitting against the wall of people who were screaming and running for their lives.
Finally, he reached the center of the Night Carnival. This was where the peak of the catastrophe began.
