There was a long wait for them to grow up though. It would take a few years for the puppies to become big dogs. Who knew how many intruders could have entered the house within this period of time!

“Let’s keep these two puppies in the courtyard. Build a fenced area for them so that they can play in the courtyard. Otherwise, if anyone takes a fancy to them and steals them, we would never see them again,” Qiao Mei said as she looked at Xia Zhe.

“Alright, I’ll get it done in a while,” Xia Zhe said.

The older folks always said that black dogs could attract wealth and ward off evil spirits and ensure the safety of the family. It was very rare to find a totally black puppy, especially one which was strong and healthy.

Qiao Qiang must have gone to the dog market many times before he found these two puppies. Since Qiao Qiang liked them so much, she would let him raise them. She just needed to ensure that the dogs were up-to-date with their vaccines so that they would not spread any diseases to the children.

She did not know if there was any vaccine for dogs in this era. During this time, there were no such things as pet shops. The veterinarians were actually doctors who took care of livestock and they were not familiar with pet animals like dogs.

Qiao Mei suddenly felt a little curious about whether dogs could eat ginseng. She had heard that some dogs could recognize herbs. If they ate something bad in the wild or felt unwell, the dogs would go to the forest to look for herbs to treat themselves.

Ginseng was also a type of medicinal herb. Perhaps if dogs ate more medicinal herbs and bathed with water infused with herbs, it could help to get rid of the bacteria and pests in their bodies!

These little puppies had probably just been weaned. She would wait for them to grow up before giving it a try.

When Qiao Qiang heard that Qiao Mei and the rest were on their way home, he waited in the living room in the front yard since early in the morning. He even specially instructed Xu Kang to prepare a table full of delicious food, so that they could welcome Li Gui and the children home and also sweep away all the bad luck!

“So, is Grandfather worried about me or the children?” Qiao Mei pouted and asked.

“Of course I’m worried about you! You’re my whole life! If anything happens to you, how am I supposed to live? Can you be more prudent in the future? Don’t you even spare a thought for your family members?” Qiao Qiang said reproachfully.

Xia Zhe quickly walked up to Qiao Qiang and said apologetically, “Grandfather, it’s all my fault. I didn’t protect Qiao Mei well…”

Qiao Qiang was really quite unhappy with Xia Zhe this time round. Li Gui getting kidnapped was such a major issue, but Xia Zhe actually let Qiao Mei come back and deal with the problem herself. If Xia Zhe had come back with her, then things would have been very different.
