Chapter 44
The moment she stepped into the frat house, someone elbowed her in the side. She blinked and turned only to find her best friend, Ashton, with a deadly glare. Her friend stood in front of her, squinting his eyes against the light.
"I'm shocked you remember me!" He teased her, lips curving in a grin.
It indeed has been a while. Allie was so wrapped up in her problems; she barely had time to talk with him. Ashtons one of her best friends, but she was in no mood for banter. Or anything else for that matter. Her only motive to visit the frat was to see Nate and confess everything.
Her best friend had his hands on his hips, like he had any actual authority around here, brow raised. "I'm waiting..."
"Ashton, not now", She mumbled, hostile. "I need to speak with Nate."
Her best friend twisted his lips. "I heard you on the phone."
"Where is he?"
"Allie, he just got back this morning from Jakes place. Maybe you should give him some time."
Allie stared back at him. Her friend had a point. The Alpha recently attended his friends funeral. Maybe she shouldn't be springing all of it on him so soon. Nate deserved to have some alone time and grieve for his friend. At the thought of Jake, her heart clenched painfully. Will he forgive her after finding out the truth?
The omega swallowed the lump in her throat. "You are right. I'll come back soon."
Three days later, she barged into the frat house again. It's now or never. With Sam not bothering to pick her calls, she was getting very angsty. Allie needed someone on her side.
She entered the room without knocking and found Chris sitting across him. Both of them looked deep in thought. The omega cleared her throat, still standing near the doorstep.
Nate snapped his head up. "Allie"
The Alpha appeared tired. He was wearing a long-sleeve black shirt and some sweats. Those mop of curls were falling over his shoulders, eyes red-rimmed. It was evident that he hadn't been sleeping for a while, judging by those dark circles.
"Hi"
Chris waved at her. "Hi"
"Is this a bad time?"
Both of them shook their heads before Chris spoke up. "Please come in."
Allie nervously stepped in and closed the door behind her. There was tension in the room, her skin pricking with goosebumps at Nate's intense stare at her. She had no idea what to do or how to start, for that matter. Seconds ago, she was confident in telling him everything but now, facing him, it didn't seem easy.
"Chris, I'll talk to you later."
His friend protested. "Oh, come on!"
"Close the door behind you", Nate warned, his eyes dark and glare fierce. The rasp behind it made her shiver.
The omega shared a look with Chris before he took a step back. He patted Nate on his shoulder and nodded at Allie as in saying his farewells.
"I'll see you later, Allie."
And just like that, Chris sauntered away from the both of them and out of the door. As soon as the click of the door echoed softly in the room, Allie sighed. It's only two of them now.
"Why did you ask him to leave? He looked like he wanted to stay," She asked, breaking the silence in the room.
When he turned to face him, Nate was staring at her, his lip caught in between his teeth as his eyes scanned her face. Allie felt like she was being scrutinised or examined closely. The air around her slowly grew uncomfortable at his silence.
The Alpha quickly looked away and released his lip from the grip of his canines.
"Because I can feel when something is off with you."
Allie stilled at that. She had to keep herself from reacting in a way that made her seem shady. That's why she forced a nervous smile that didn't seem to last as long as she wanted. Does that mean Nate could sense when she's lying? Hopefully not.
It didn't matter now. She's here to tell him the truth anyway.
"What do you mean?" The omega tilted her head.
"Your scent...it's different, a bit weird."
She giggled nervously. "Well, do I at least smell nice?"
Humour was the only thing that comforted her at the moment. She noticed that Nates mood had also shifted ever since she stepped in. Earlier with Chris, he was deep in thought, a blank look on his face. Having a conversation with him felt familiar and calming.
"Of course."
Nate was quick to answer, which made her blush. He cleared his throat. "That's not the point."
"Then what?"
He sighed. "Leave it. Let's change the subject."
"Okay," Allie nodded. "To what?" Her eyebrow raised, lips tugged up into a smile before quickly fading away.
The Alpha inched closer to her, took her hand in his. "I want to apologise for storming like that. You have to believe me; I was messed up after hearing the news. It won't happen again."
For being a pure Alpha Hell hound, Nate was so much different from the rumours she had heard throughout her life about Alpha Hell hounds. They were ruthless, bloodthirsty and always creating trouble. She expected Nate to be one of those, but he's so different.
She wondered if the Alpha was being pleasant for the sake of their baby. If a bond between a pure Omega and Pure Alpha Hell hound is the strongest, then Allie would know. For now, she had to figure a way to tell him about her past—a shameful part of it.
Allie felt a tiny spark at the touch, almost like a shock that jolted her.
"Allie?"
"Huh?" She blinked at him.
"Are you just going to stand there and stare at me all day? Or are you going to say something?" Nate asked, a weak smile curving on his lips.
Only if it's that easy, she should have told him by now.
"I'm getting to it."
"Okay"
Sucking a sharp breath, she stared at the wall over his shoulder. That way, Allie didn't have to meet his piercing stare. "I'm an assassin."
Silence filled the room for few seconds, their loud breaths echoing around. It was uncomfortable, made her skin prickle. No one moved, simply staring at each other and not knowing what to say.
Nates face broke in a grin. "This is a terrible joke, Allie."
She winced. "I'm not joking."
Allie was afraid of this—him not believing her at all. Who would accept something like that without thinking of it as a joke? She had no other solution than to confess.
When she didn't laugh at all, Nate opened and closed his mouth. "You're serious?"
"Yes"
"Tell me everything."
And so she did. The truth about her parents, her brother and her life shifting around the homes. All the while, Allie stared at the wall instead of meeting his eyes, face red hot as she recalled those memories. They were a bittersweet part of her life.
"W-Why didn't y-you tell me? Why d-didn't you t-trust me enough to tell me?" Nate whispered, his voice caught up, overwhelmed with emotion. He raised her hand to his lips and pressed a chaste kiss.
"You're very brave, Allie. And I'm sorry about your parents. I hope you know they are proud of you. I wish you would have told me sooner."
She stilled at that, battling with her inner thoughts. How could Allie have explained any of it to him? They were still reeling from pregnancy news, and after that, she went to see his pack. So many things went down after that.
"Umm...because I was embarrassed that I liked doing that."
Nate bobbed his head; his hand was still holding onto hers. "Why are you telling now?"
The confusion in his voice startled her. Of course, she left the Jake part and that Harold assigned the task to her.
"There's something else you need to know."
"Okay?"
"It's about Jake"
A range of emotions passed across his face, and the Alpha tried to remove his hand from her. She gripped on to him, panicking. She was not ready to let go.
"What about him, Allie?"
"The people who came looking for me—the Crescent Pack. They know about my brothers past and me and recruited both of us to do their dirty work."
The air shifted in the room, the Alpha narrowing his eyes at her. "You said you didn't know them."
"I had no idea about them until Sam told me. Trust me"
Nate tugged her arm, his nails digging painfully in her skin. "What does that pack have to do with Jake?"
"You're hurting me."
The Alpha gritted his teeth. "Answer me, Allie!"
"T-The pack wanted Jake dead, and so they assigned us the job."
Nate froze, his grip loosening on her arm. The Alpha blinked at her several times. "Just tell me this—were you going to kill Jake on that night in the club?"
She choked on her tears. "Y-Yes but—"
"Get out!"
