"Please don't," I begged my husband after I took another hit from him. He now thought he should get our daughter Aurelia to punish me by punishing her. "Let her out of it. She is only 12."
"I WILL GET HER NOW AND THEN YOU WILL SEE THE CONSEQUENCES OF YOUR ACTS!" he roared. I didn't want him to hurt her. She was just a kid. She wasn't supposed to hear our argument. All I ever wanted was a beautiful childhood for my baby.
Before Hector could run up the stairs, I grabbed his arm desperately.
"Please. Please, dear. I'll do anything you want." I continued to plead.
"Everything?" he asked now and I knew what perverted thoughts he had. I don't know why I had married such a man, but he wasn't like that before. It wasn't until he became a drinker that he also became aggressive and caught to hit me.
We tried to fight his addiction and he was sober for a year. But then he relapsed again and now I really don't know how to continue. It can not go on like this.
"Everything," I confirmed and had to swallow. I already knew what he was about to ask of me.
Then he stepped down the one step he was already standing on and stood in front of me. In the next moment he undid his fly. I knew what to do, but I only did it to protect Aurelia, my everything. She was everything I love. The most important thing in the whole world. I would even die for her.
-----
Hector had meanwhile fallen asleep in his chair and I quickly ran upstairs, where I pulled out my cell phone. I don't know why I'm even still here. I was just hoping that Hektor would be his old self again. But my hope died and I had to do something to protect Aurelia.
I dialed the number of an old work colleague who I hoped could help me.
"Yes?" came his voice.
“Matthew, luckily you lost weight. I need your help. Now!" I said softly into the receiver. Still, I was nervous, afraid that Hector would catch me. He would immediately get the wrong idea if he found out that I was talking to another man. That's why I had to gave up my job as an office clerk a few months ago.
"Lily? Is that you. Why haven't you been answering my calls and texts for months. I was worried And then I have to find out from the boss that you resigned?"
"Please Matt, I don't have time to explain right now, but I really need your help. Can you get Aurelia and me plane tickets. It doesn't matter where, the main thing is to get away."
"What about your husband?" I didn't want to answer that.
"Please can you help me?"
"Naturally. I'll start up my PC quickly to get you tickets and then I'll pick you up. OK?"
"Yes," I replied, relieved. I was incredibly grateful to him.
I quickly ran into Aurelia's room and started packing her things. She didn't notice any of this because she was a sound sleeper and looked like a little angel with her golden curls spread out on the pillow. My little angel.
Then I saw through her window how Matt's car stopped in front of the door.
I was about to wake Aurelia when I saw Hector walking down the driveway to Matthew's car. And he looked angry. Damn angry.
This can't go well...
Leaving Aurelia in her bed, I ran outside and tried to stop my husband. Only then did I notice the gun in his hand. Where did he get that from all of a sudden?
Matthew got out of his car and started to stand protectively in front of me. However, he was beaten up by Hector before he had a chance, leaving him unconscious on the ground.
I was incredibly sorry. I didn't want him in danger because of me.
Hector pointed his revolver at me and yelled at me again.
"SO YOU HAVE A LOVER? YOU CHEATING ME? Is that why you've been rejecting me for months and not fucking with me anymore? IS IT THAT?” He was completely beside himself. I tried to talk to him calmingly, but it didn't work.
"Please calm down!" I kept saying.
"YOU WANT ME TO CALM MYSELF? YOU'RE JUST ANOTHER OF THOSE BITCHES."
"Please Hector, I have nothing to do with Matt. Please call..."
A shot rang out and everything around me fell silent.
I looked down at myself and watched as the blood ran out of my chest.
The next moment I was lying on the cold winter ground and my blood turned the white snow red.
"What have I done?" Hector said softly. He seemed to have finally calmed down. It was just too late now.
My vision blurred and fell on our house.
Aurelia came running out in a panic and crouched next to me.
"Mom? Please mom, you need to wake up." I heard her say, but her voice sounded far away.
My last thoughts, before everything finally went black forever, were of Aurelia, my little angel. I couldn't let her down now. Not with him.
But then everything was black and only silence.
I had failed. I couldn't save her...
