Lucas POV (βπ£ππ€πππ₯ πππͺ)
Things were finally looking up for me. At least that was how it felt as I watched Eve fish for her car keys beneath her drawer. We were about to go pick up my car from the front of my house - which was such a relief to me. To be honest, In addition to getting that flash, I hadn't told her that my premium card was in there too.
Call me paranoid but I always kept my money near. As in attached to my body near. The only reason I hadn't carried it was because of the urgency of Damien's condition at the time. I had been so plagued with worry that I even forgot to lock the car door. Hopefully, some desperate lowlife has not yet discovered that the car was unlocked, and see it as an opportunity for a better life.
"Let's go." I heard Eve say after finally finding what she was looking for. I followed on her tail as we made our way past her long hallway and towards the stairs. A loud clang echoed down the hall and we halted in our steps. It sounded like someone crashed into something in the living room. Which was weird because I knew for a fact that we were the only ones in the house.
I could hear the sound of my heartbeat drumming loudly in the silence.
"What was that?" I whispered to a very still Eve.
"Shhhh." She hushed, placing a finger on her lips. We stood still like that for what seemed like a billion seconds before Eve whispered, "Wait here." And moved to the edge of the corridor just shy from the steps. Tilting her head to the side, she slowly angled her neck so she could peer into the sitting room but quickly reverted as a resounding bang followed after her, narrowly missing her head.
"Fuck!" She cursed and my body sprung into action. I darted towards her and grabbed her by the arm, pulling her from the edge of the wall and towards her bedroom. We needed cover right now.
Eve followed without a word and we dashed into her bedroom and locked it up. "Do you have a gun?" I asked in a hurry, my eyes darting between the window and the door. I went towards the window and opened the curtain, pulled up the window bind and peered downstairs. The gate was halfway open and a black jeep was parked just outside the estate.
She fucking sent amateurs. Anger burned within me. How the fuck did she find me?
"Please don't tell me that Laura tracked you to my house?" I heard Eve groan minutes before I felt cold steel being pressed into my hands.
My hands instinctively tightened around the gun as I pulled my head from the window and turned towards her. "Yes, she did. I'm so sorry Eve-"
"How the fuck did they get in? How did they find this place? Who the fuck is this bitch?" Anger resonated from her tone as she cursed. She was pissed alright, and it was hot as hell. I removed the curtain from its hinges and began twisting it into a thick rope.
"Don't worry, you'll be fine I promise." I tied the rope to the foot of the bed. "Use this rope to climb down from the window. The moment you touch the ground, climb into your car and drive off to safety." I offered her the other end of the rope.
Eve raised my eyebrows at me. "Am I not the one who is suppose to protect you? These bastards came into my home, invaded my space, and are now putting bullet holes into my walls and you expect me to run?"
We heard heavy steps just outside the corridor as they broke open the doors to the rooms before us. Ours was the last but they were close. I needed her out of the way so she didn't distract me in the middle of a fight. "Please Eve, you need to get to safety now!" I whispered urgently.
Eve corked the gun I hadn't noticed she was carrying and smirked. "I am not one to run from a fight-" Before she could finish up her sentence, the door was kicked in and a man carrying a revolver barged into the room, gun blazing. I dodged out of the way just in time to miss a bullet from tearing into my chest, and watched from the corner of my eye as Eve doubled over and crossed the bed.
Next thing I know a hunting knife sliced through the air and lodged itself into the intruder's chest. I gaped at Eve in shock. That was some mad ass throw. As the guy slumped to the floor, my gaze was drawn away from Eve to the guy who was behind the unfortunate bastard Eve just killed. Before he could act I aimed for his temple and fired
Shit! That was sure to draw attention.
Shouts came from the opposite room as more footsteps approached us. I quickly made my way to the back of the door barely seconds before another man stumbled into the room, and on seeing his dead companions, cursed loudly.
I didn't give him time to think. I wrapped my arms around his neck and kicked him behind the knee. He stumbled to the ground, taking me with him. I doubled over him and raised my left arm just in time to block his punch. Grabbing his limb, I twisted It, raised my knee and jammed it into his solar plexus. He doubled over in pain and made for his gun but I was faster. I sprinted forward and grabbed it before he could, then knocked him out with the base of the metal.
I heaved a sigh and turned, just in time to see Eve on top of a huge black man as she repeatedly assaulted his face with heavy blows. With an angry growl, she landed a final blow to his skull which rendered him unconscious.
Fuck! that was sexy as hell. Apparently, Eve could hold her own pretty well in a fight.
"I should have just killed him." She growled, her eyes shining in anger. I chuckled. A woman after my own heart.
"You could have," I agreed. "But you didn't."
"We need them alive. I have to catch that bitch." She spat with venom. Oh, Laura just messed with the wrong woman.
"You sound vengeful," I stated as I began dragging the unconscious men towards the door.
Eve joined in. "Seeing as I was just assaulted in my own house, this level of anger is expected. That bitch just made things personal."
I chuckled but remained silent on the matter
"We'll interrogate them in the basement." Eve let out, her lips turning up wickedly.
My eyes widened. "You have a basement? Why am I even surprised? After the way you just handled yourself, I shouldn't be surprised if you had a dragon somewhere in this house."
She smiled. "I'll take that as a compliment."
I followed behind her, dragging the unconscious intruder along with me. This guy was heavy. How was she even dragging him so effortlessly?
Oh, Lucas, She wasn't just smart, but strong too.
We got to the basement and tied up the men in mental chairs. "You need to go get that flash, Lucas. Because right now it seems like Laura is a step ahead of us."
I added in agreement. "I'll take care of the bodies along the way. I saw their car parked outside the estate. I'll get rid of that too."
"Yeah, dump the car then go get yours. I'll handle things down here." She said, eyes flashing.
"Okay." I turned to leave, then paused. "Thank you," I whispered, then walked out of the room without waiting for her response.
It wasn't easy, but I was able to drag the bodies into the back of their jeep after I had driven it inside the compound. I got into the car and speed out of the estate. After dumping the car in the outskirt of town - which was in the middle of nowhere - making sure that all my fingerprints were wiped out, I hitched a ride from a passing motorist and headed for my mansion.
It would be an understatement to describe what I was feeling right now as just mere tiredness. I was exhausted, fatigued, pissed, scared and hungry. At least the guy that picked me was nice enough to drop me in front of my house. I thanked him and dropped two hundred dollars on his passengers sit. The guy looked at me in shock for just a moment. Then gave a shrug, thanked me and speed away.
As I turned towards the house, something hit me. Where the hell was my car? I took tentative steps towards the gate and peered inside. My car was parked in my garage. I breathed a sigh of relief. One of the medics had probably driven it inside for me after we rushed to the hospital.
I opened the gate and walked into the compound. I needed some clothes and files. It looked like I was going to be staying at the hospital with Damien for now because staying with Eve was me practically endangering her. As I stepped into the mansion, the hairs at the back of my neck stood at attention. I ignored the feeling and turned on the lights to the foyer - only to be stopped in my tracks.
A figure was comfortably reclined on one of my sofas with a glass of bourbon in her hands.
"Have a seat, Lucas." She said, eyes boring into mine. My heart sank.
Laura.
