Chapter 14

Lucas POV (ℙ𝕣𝕖𝕤𝕖𝕟𝕥 𝕕𝕒𝕪)
I watched as Eve left the room, my heart skipping a beat. What the fuck was wrong with me? There was no chemistry between us. Okay, maybe a little. But that could be put off as mere sexual tension. As Damien had pointed out, we were both easy on the eye. And I knew for a fact that she couldn't stand me 99 per cent of the time we were together.
If anything, today had proved that very fact. So why did it feel like I could sense every bit of her emotions? Like I could just look at her and tell exactly what she was thinking? It was almost like these feelings were a continuation of something deep. Something old.
I shook my head and tried to concentrate on what Damien was saying. I could vaguely hear him say something about being very disappointed. But I couldn't seem to stay focus as my mind kept drifting back to Eve.
All I could think about was how she had looked at me when she realised that I had come back for her.
You need to stop it, Lucas. Remember the last woman that came into your world? Do you remember how You destroyed her? How you-
"And I'd advice the both of you to just jump your bones and get it over with," I heard Damien hiss, cutting through my consciousness. "So that you can go back to paying attention to me."
That last part got me rolling my eyes at him. "You attention seeking bastard. I am right here with you, aren't I? So what else do you want?" I asked and watched as his face widened with a playful grin.
"A burger maybe?" I laughed out loud. Not able to help myself. Grateful that he was here with me and alive. I had missed him while he was gone and I hoped never to experience such fear again.
Reaching for him, I smacked his sides. "You joker! I'm sure you wouldn't mind a warm curvy body too." I teased. Knowing fully well that he would fall for it.
"How did you know-" I suddenly raised my hands and halted him, mid-sentence. The moment he kept shut, I heard the screening sound of tyres driving into the compound, and I jacked up instantly, making a swift dive for the window. I shifted the curtains an inch and peered into the compound.
"Shit!' I cursed, and immediately shut the blinds.
"What?" I heard a worried Damien ask, and turned just in time to see him struggling to sit up In bed.
"The police are here," I said and scrambled towards him. "You need to lie down," Gripping his shoulders, I began guiding him back into the bed.
My heart began beating hard beneath my chest as I heard them come down from their cars, and head into the house. How much worse could this get? First Laura, and now the police?
Damien began pushing back my hands, forcing himself to sit up. "Relax, " I cooed and pressed him more firmly into the bed.
"I-" He tried to protest but I placed my fingers on my lips. "Be quiet, we don't know what the police want yet. And we don't have a story cooked up either. So you have to stay out of sight."
"That's the more reason why-" He began, worry lines, sprinkled across his face.
"Calm down. Let Eve handle this. She has a lot of connections, I'm sure she'll find her way out of this."
"Yeah, her way. What about us?" Damien asked shakily, as fatigue finally began kicking in.
I drew the duvet over him. "She'll find a way, I'm sure. But if it makes you feel any better, I'll go check on her." He nodded as he began feeling the effect of the drug Eve injected him.
I exited the room, only when I was sure, that he had become calm. Stepping into the corridor, I took tentative steps as I approached the stairs. Thank God the house echoed. It made it easier to hear sounds from the living room. I pressed myself against the wall facing the steps and listened quietly.
"What can I do for you officer?"Eve's voice resonated down the hall.
"There was a disturbance at Metro General Hospital a few hours ago." A guff voice stated. I moved closer to the stairs, wishing I could just step out of the shadows and-
"Oh really? What kind of disturbance and how does that concern me?" Eve asked. Her voice breaking through my thoughts.
"We got an anonymous call an hour ago, along with a picture that put you on the scene around the time the disturbance happened." The officer answered. Matter-of-factly. I tilted my head to the side a little, trying to get a better look at the situation at hand. In case there was a need to defend ourselves.
"So?" Eve implored as she folded her arms around her chest. She was playing coy. "What did this anonymous caller say?'
"That's classified ma'am. But we'll need to search your house."
"Why?" There was no way they were searching this house. Those men Eve tortured yesterday were still in the basement.
"We have reasons to believe that you are holding hostage a patient from the hospital. He went missing a few minutes after you were seen driving out of the parking lot."
"What reason?" She barked. Her nose flaring in fury. "I know my right Mr-"
"Detective." He interjected. "It's detective Rowan."
Eve glared at him as if she was going to throw her shoe at him at any minute. "Detective, you'll need to show me a warrant to search my house. Except you have a reason to arrest me-"
"We cannot arrest you. But we can take you down to the station for questioning."
Eve's eyes narrowed. "Was that a threat?"
"No? But you'll have to come with us nonetheless and my men will remain here to guard the place-"
"No way in hell am I going anywhere with you or letting your men stay in my house." She thundered, pointing her forefinger at him.
Lord! This was getting out of hand. Eve needed to calm down or else, she was going to lose it. And I couldn't let that happen.
"Ms Eve, if you don't cooperate, we can easily-"
" What the hell is going on here?" I cut in and began walking down the stairs.
The detective looked from me to Eve, surprised at the intrusion. "And who might this be?" He asked, looking me over from head to toe.
My mouth twitched. "He's-"
"I'm her fiance," I said, wrapping my arms around her hips as I moved to stand beside her. I noticed the lady who had delivered Eve's note to me at the office, sitting on one of the sofas, completely oblivious to what was going on around her.
Why was she so concentrated on her laptop anyways?
I tore my gaze away from her and settled it on the detective. "What can we do for you detective?'
Detective Rowan studied me pensively, lips drawn in a thin chain. "We need to take your fiancee down to the station for questioning."
"Can't you just question her here?" I asked, "She-'
"She shouldn't leave a sick inlaw, to his wicked brother." A grumpy voice said from behind us. We all turned towards the stairs to find a pale looking Damien strutting down it. I immediately released Eve's waist and rushed over to Damien's side.
"What the fuck are you doing?" I whispered harshly into his ear as I grabbed his arms, and aided him down the remaining flight of stairs.
He gave me a puzzled look before murmuring, "Saving your ass of course." I paused my lips and assisted him across the hall, biting my tongue in the process. I was going to kill him for pulling this stunt.
Detective Rowan looked confused. It was too evident in the way he was looking from Damien, to me, to Eve. "Are you Mr Damien Hay?" He asked the moment Damien settled into the sofa opposite Eve's assistant.
"Yes? Is there a problem?" Damien implored, eyes trained on the man. Behind him, the other police officers were murmuring among themselves in hushed tones.
Detective Rowan sent them a look and they instantly paused. Turning back to us, he rubbed his jaw with his left palm. "We had reasons to believe that you were abducted, a few hours ago from Metro hospital."
"Abducted?" Damien exclaimed, eyes wide in disbelieve. The guy was good. "Detective, I was discharged."
I almost choked. "Discharged? By who?" The detective asked, shock plastered on his face. I looked over to Eve for help. Hoping she had a way of salvaging the situation. "Mr Damien?"
"Yeah, yeah. I was discharged by-"
"By doctor Jay." Eve blurted. Eyes flashing, she sent a dark look to Damien.
"Yeah, that's his name. I totally forgot." Damien confirmed.
Detective Rowan studied the exchange closely, his face a stony mask. After a moment of excruciating silence. He finally sighed. " Okay then. This means no one has to go to the station. For now." Turning to Eve, he said, "I'll be in touch Ms Red."
Eve scoffed. "I hope not detective Rowan."
Detective Rowan gave a tight smile, veered around, signalled his men with a quick snap of his head, then stormed out of the room.
And just like that, they were gone.
