Chapter 6

Lucas POV (āš£šš¤ššš„ šššŖ)
I sat at the back of my slick, black Lamborghini, patiently waiting for Damien to return. I was already sweating all over and it wasn't from lack of ventilation. To say I hated waiting was an understatement but when my only option was this or my untimely death, which was for real this time, my lack of patience had to be reviewed.
It wasn't like being hunted didn't have its perks. I got to see the world in a different light, knowing every breath might be my last. But this wasn't how I envisioned spending the later part of my days. I was supposed to come out winning, get married, start a family, have kids and grandkids. Have a stable life. But it appeared my past sins wouldn't simply let me go. I was being punished for the decisions I had made in the past. Decisions I had been forced to make.
Were you forced? My subconscious asked. Or were you simply too weak to fight back?
I did what I had to do. I fired back. Probably trying to convince my guilt-filled soul more than I was trying to defend.
Picking up my iPhone, I slid into Damien's DM to find out what the hell was taking him so long. This Eve shouldn't be all that difficult to convince because from what I've heard, she was all about the money, and money was all I had.
"What is going on in there, Damien?" I typed even though I already knew the answer.
"Calm down Lucas, I'll soon be out." He replied. How in the hell does he do that? Multitask. Shouldn't he be talking to the legendary Eve right now?
"So you said fifteen minutes ago. Get your ass out here now!" I command. I knew I was being irrational but I just couldn't keep waiting around to die. I needed this fixed. Like now.
When I didn't get a reply from him, I slumped back unto the seat. Looking out the window, I glanced at the metropolitan building Damien had walked into. What kind of woman could singlehandedly build this kind of empire without a sweat? From the little my search button could provide, she hadn't existed until three years ago. Where did she come from? Who was she before all this? These were questions I had no business asking but I couldn't resist a mystery.
You couldn't resist innocence either. My subconscious snicked. I ignored him, again.
I heard the car door open, severing my strain of thought. A tired-looking Damien slipped into the driver seat and turned to me.
"She wants to meet you."
"Really? Like now?" I asked. That was fast. What in Gods name did he tell her?
"Yeah, like now. But I told her you'll be ready to see her tomorrow. I figured you weren't ready." He explained. He was so enjoying this.
"How did you figure that, Damien? When did you start calling the shots?" I berated, knowing fully well that he was doing it for me. Maybe I just needed someone to lash out on.
"Probably when you started behaving like a bitch that needed to be saved." He fired. Annoyed.
"A bitch? Really? You--"
"Oh please stop this Lucas. I am your friend and I know when you are frustrated and scared. Lucky for you, I am here, and so is Ms Red. She took the deal brother, you now have a fixer. Now I'm gonna drive you home, and you are gonna freshen up, have sex, and go to bed."
I just sat there muted, looking at him like he just whipped me with a cane. Of course, he had. He was the only one privileged enough to scold me and live to tell the tale. Others were either dead by my hands or some unforeseen circumstances. Yep, I was cursed. Cursed with the spirit of death.
"Let's go home, " I whispered, too humbled to say anything else.
As Damien turned the ignition, there was a knock on my side of the glass. I turned to see who it was and found a light-skinned lady with chocolate hair and brown eyes staring back at me.
I slid down the glass. "Hello, you must be the mysterious client Damien talked about." She said matter-of-factly.
I sent a puzzled look to Damien before turning back to her. "Yeah, apparently I am."
"Good. Eve would like to have dinner with you at her house tomorrow, at seven."
I raised my eyebrows, "Really? Why is that?"
"That's for me to know and for you to find out. Don't be late." She dropped a piece of paper on my thigh and turned to Damien. "It was nice meeting you handsome. Unfortunately for both of us, I'm not into your kind."
"Unfortunately indeed," Damien replied with a chuckle. With a smirk on her face, she blew him a kiss and walked away.
I picked up the piece of paper she had dropped on my lap just as we pulled out of the driveway. Just as I opened it, Damien asked, "What does it say?"
"That's what I'm about to find out," I replied with a groan. The guy was too curious.
Meet me at Suncity estate.
Don't be late.
I read it out loud for him to hear and he chucked. "What exactly did you tell her Damien?" I asked. After the little stunt, the brown-eyed lady just pulled, I was convinced there was a lot he wasn't telling me.
"That's for me to know and for you to find--"
"Oh don't fucking say it," I growled, not letting him finish his sentence. He busted out laughing, gripping the wheel as his life depended on it. I was so tempted to join him but was too hung up on the fact that he was mocking me.
I swear I'll strangle you." I threatened, chuckling lightly.
"You didn't seem to mind when she said it to you." He heartily pointed out.
"Well, you aren't about to save me from certain death. Her boss on the other hand...."
"Selfish bastard." Damien spat and I threw him a dirty look as he stepped down from the car to open the gate of our home.
I was about to add a sneaky comment when my phone began to ring. I picked it up and discovered the number calling was unknown. An uneasy feeling began to grow in my gut as I picked the call.
"Hello, Lucas."
No shit! My heart began to pound beneath my ribs as dread overwhelmed me.
"I am sorry to disappoint you, but I am still alive and coming for you." I couldn't speak, I couldn't think. I just sat frozen as I listened to the bastard talk.
"Anyways, I have a little present packaged for you, which I am sure you are about to find. Say hi to Damien for me, that's if he survives my present." The call went dead and I stared at it in modification. I immediately looked out the window and watched as Damien went for the handle of the gate and it hit me.
"Damien, don't touch the gate, " I yelled through the window, but it was already too late as he had already pulled the handle and was pushing the gate inside. There was a click and a resounding bang and everywhere went bright with light.
I froze in horror as I watched him being flung back forcefully by the wave of the device, and cringed when I heard a sickening crack as he made contact with the side of our car.
My ears still ringing from the force of the noise, I stumbled out of the car and ran towards Damien. "Call an ambulance!" I yelled to one of the neighbours who had rushed out to see what was going on.
I reached Damien and knelt beside him, trying to look for where he was hurt the most. "Hold on brother, hold on. You are going to be fine." I chanted to an unconscious Damien.
I heard the ambulance and my heart soared with hope. Now that they were here he had a better chance of survival.
"Make way sir, let's take care of him." I heard a voice say behind me, and I moved aside to watch as he was carefully being carried into their medical van.
"If you are family you'll have to come with us." I vaguely heard someone say beside me.
"Yes, I'm family," I muttered and followed them into the van, abandoning my opened car in front of the gate.
As we drove at high speed to the hospital, I realized two fundamental things. Firstly, my nemesis was in town and secondly, if this Eve couldn't save me, then no one could.
At the thought of Eve, I remembered our appointment.
I was going to be late after all.
