Chapter 20
" You're really something, aren't you? " Alex drawled out lazily as he stared up at her from under his thick lashes. Ava ignored him and continued, loudly this time.
" And it's Adams, not Evans " She corrected him firmly.
Alex threw her a look which meant he didn't take lightly to being corrected. Ava returned his look with a defiant stare and they remained that way for a while until Alex finally gave up with a sigh. She wouldn't be easy to deal with, something within him kept giving him a warning signal.
Ava took a deep breath and continued " So uh... I was your babysitter when you were... Sick " She kinda stressed the last word and looked down at her feet.
When she didn't receive any reaction from him, she looked up and found him staring right back at her.
" Hmm, you were my babysitter " He nodded and gave her a dangerous smile which chilled Ava down to her spine.
His demeanor changed into a stiff one as though he was offended merely at the thought of her being his babysitter. He pulled the bed covers aside and got up. Ava's eyes followed his action as he walked over to the window. He stood there for some minutes, his back to her.
" Need help with anything? " She asked innocently.
He turned to her now, trying to figure out if there was anything beneath the innocent look. He shook his head and his lips held an arrogant twist.
" No, I don't need your help. In fact, I won't be needing your services anymore, Miss Adams " He gave her a cynical smile.
" Evans " Her voice shook as she corrected him quietly. She knew she was not in the position to say anything but just couldn't keep mute while he did that.
Alex shot her a glare that made Ava teared her gaze away from him.
" You're not in the position to say a word Miss Evans, I'm sure you are aware " He took a pause before he continued " I'm not sure how much longer you'll be able to keep your babysitting job "
At that point, a tear threatened to escape from her right eye but she blinked it away, quickly. The last thing she wanted was for him to see her in that embarrassing way.
Alex calmly watched the fleet of emotions crossed her face. Fear, sadness and finally anger all of which merged together to turn into a full fledged rage. In swift but short strides, she stood up and crossed over to his side. Alex found himself walking backwards as she continued walking towards him as though she meant to crash into him fully. She finally stopped when his back hit the wall and they were so close that if Ava had so much moved two inches closer, they would make physical contact.
Her eyes were raging fire as she stared into his eyes with defiance. His eyes on the other hand, held a bit of curiosity at what she was up to and a little bit of fear mixed with arrogance. A slapping sound that Ava made on the wall with her hands startled him and the arrogance within him faded, and fear took over his expression as he stared at the lady before him who looked like she would strangle him any moment.
Where was the innocent lady who was with him few minutes ago? He asked himself as he refused to meet her piercing stare with his frightened ones. Who the hell was this woman to make him feel this way? No other woman would dare do this to him and why on earth was he scared of her? He asked himself in displeasure.
" Well Mr I Own The World, you know what? I'm tired of keeping your ass clean so it'll be a pleasure to be outta your hair! " With that being said, she turned and walked away briskly, praying her legs wouldn't fail her and make her collapse in the process.
She grabbed her bag and walked to the door, taking a pause when she was on the verge of opening it. She turned back to him to find that he stood rooted on the spot in shock. His lips were parted slightly too but Ava ignored that and eyed him in disdain.
" Have a good life sir " She said with indifference and bowed in a mocking way. With that done, she eyed him once more and went out. Alex's mouth hung open for more seconds until the muffled sounds outside brought him back to his senses. He guessed his brother was trying to stop Ava from leaving. She was one hell of a stubborn woman, Alex thought as her voice drifted to his ears.
It was evident from her voice that she was hell bent on leaving, saying she couldn't deal with his ( Alex's ) sorry ass anymore. Slowly, Alex walked to the bed and slumped on to it, still in a daze.
Where... Just where did his brother bring that lady from??? He thought incredulously. At that moment, the door opened and Jack barged in, annoyance written all over his face.
" What the hell do you think you're doing, Alexander?! " His voice boomed across the walls.
Alex returned his brother's stare with a defiant one of his " What? " He asked nonchalantly.
" Explain what just happened, will you? " Jack demanded harshly.
Alex raised his left eyebrow in fake innocence
" And what just happened? " He asked back instead of answering his brother's question although he knew fully well what Jack meant.
Jack shot him a death glare and glanced at Ava who stood just behind the door. She wouldn't hesitate to make a dash for it there was a need to. She stared at Alex warily from under her long lashes and looked away quickly the minute he felt her eyes on him and turned to her.
He sneered " She didn't fill you in on the details of the whole thing, did she? " He then directed his gaze on Jack.
