Chapter 16- Attempt
"I'm here to see Jessica McKenzie" I smiled sweetly at the nurse behind the desk just as I rushed through the hospital entrance.
For some reason, like my night and morning with Tristan, I was in the perkiest mood. It was also Saturday, meaning I had no work, so I decided to make my day even better by visiting Jessica.
The nurse didn't seem to acknowledge my presence, but it oddly didn't annoy me like it normally would. She didn't take her eyes from the computer screen as she answered me.
"That's room-"
"Thirty-eight. I know" I cut her off, but not in a harsh way. She quickly glanced at me before directing her gaze back to the computer.
"She's being discharged today. So you can help her if you're a relative"
"Thank you" I shouted over my shoulder as I made my way to her room.
I've gotten really fond of Jessica over the week I've known her. Saving my life was one thing, but being a great talking partner and friend was a totally different thing.
She was such a gem, and her stories were always something to behold. She was studying psychology at Stanford, and I could already see just how good she was going to be at whatever career she pursues.
Her parents have yet to visit her, simply because they couldn't afford the flight down here. It broke my heart really, and when I offered to buy them the tickets, they politely declined, saying they would visit when they got enough savings.
I secretly wired some to Jessica's tuition for next semester, simply because I felt responsible for everything, and I genuinely wanted to help them. They were all such wonderful people. They didn't even resent me for being the cause of such a horrible thing.
Nonetheless, I have developed a wonderful friendship with her. She was too sweet not to like.
I adjusted the coffee in my cup holder as I used my bottom to push the door open.
"Okay so I've got your favourite coffee. I know you hate the hospital coffee so-" I stopped immediately as I stepped inside, seeing that we were not alone.
A blonde was sitting next to her, engaged in what seemed like deep conversation as I spotted them.
But the minute our visitor turned around, the coffees went plummeting to the ground as I became eye to eye with the woman that almost caused my and Jessica's demise. I was left stunned as she just smiled innocently. Jessica looked stunned at my accident, but Mia knew exactly why I was shocked.
"Well there's no need for that Cianna. I already brought our dearest Jessica breakfast" She smiled sweetly as she stood from the chair. "But it seems like you haven't got coffee anymore huh? Clumsy are we?"
"What did you do to her you bitch!" I snarled as I took a few angry steps into the room, spilled coffee now forgotten. "Jessica, you have to throw up now" I panicked as I thought of all the things she could've done to her meal.
"What did you think? I poisoned her? Oh Cianna darling, I would never" Mia threw her hand over her chest in fake hurt as I snarled at her.
"Wait what's going on? You know each other?" Jessica asked, obviously confused.
It then occurred to me that she never saw Mia's face. She only heard about her. And Jessica was such a friendly soul--anyone who came to 'visit' her would be captivated in her wonderful conversing without question.
"Yes this is Mia. Jessica you have to puke" Her eyes grew a fraction wider as she whipped her head towards the woman who was now smirking at us.
I knew I should've called the police right away, but my focus was solely on saving Jessica who could've been poisoned by the devil herself. I wouldn't put it past her.
I rushed to the side of her bed, quickly grabbing the dust bin and bringing it to her. Mia laughed obnoxiously as she stood on the opposite side of the bed. I eyed her in contempt as I grabbed my phone, deciding to kill two birds with one stone.
"You stupid Bitch!" She snarled." I have no motive to kill sweet Jessica. I never have, but she simply was at the wrong place at the wrong time. You see Cianna? Everyone that comes into your life is destined to get hurt. You shouldn't be alive!" She shouted with a blazed in her eyes, and that's when I knew she was crazy.
I avoided her as Jessica hurled into the small bin, and I kept the phone to my ears as it rang. I scrunched my face in confusion when I saw her click handcuffs on Jessica's free hand and hooked them to the bed. I also yelped in surprise when a loud fire alarm went off throughout the building, but I was barely processing it.
"Yes, 911? Mia Walters is here in front of me at Central Hospital. I think she is dangerous and-" My voice was immediately hushed when I saw her pull a knife from her waist band. How did she even pass security with that?
"Yes Yes hurry please she has a knife!" I rushed out before pushing back the phone in my pocket.
I darted to the side, contemplating going for the exit, but I didn't dare try and leave Jessica. She looked up from the bin in pure fear as her eyes darted between the two of us.
"Mia let's just talk about this " She pleaded, but I knew too well that Mia wanted to do anything but talk.
Jessica pushed her red button continuously as her beautiful blue eyes watered. The alarm never stopped, giving me what felt like a rising headache as I tried to figure out what to do.
"I'm sorry you have to witness this Jessica. But Cianna took something from me that was never hers!" The crazy woman screeched, as she slowly walked to the side of the bed where I was.
My eyes darted towards the door, and I saw a clear run but I feared I'd leave Jessica at her wrath if I escaped. That would be too selfish of me. So I decided to fight back.
My phone vibrated in my pocket, and I quickly grabbed it as I watched Mia in anticipation. She was moving slow, so I was depending on that for someone to burst in here before she would try and attack.
"He-hello?" I answered quickly without looking at the ID. Tristan's worried voice blared through the speakers as soon as I answered, distracting me for a quick minute.
"Cianna? There was a report about Mia being at the hospital. Please don't tell me-"
"Yes. Yes I made the call and she's here in the room with me an- aaahhh" I screamed as she rushed to me and hit the phone away from my hand, before swinging her knife at me, but I ducked swiftly.
Jessica screamed in fear as I watched her try and break loose from the cuffs, but it was no use. She screamed for help over and over, but Mia was already attacking me and the alarm was still so loud.
I fought her off as best as I could, but the minute she ducked in her pocket and pulled out a small spray bottle, I didn't see anything after that when she dosed my eyes with the wretched peppery spray. I screamed in agony as I tumbled to the ground, clenched my eyes as they burned in torture.
I felt her slim figure straddling mine, and Jessica's screams and sobs became faint as I started to zone into my own world. I tried to blink my sight back to life, holding on to that small hope that someone would burst through that door and save me. I struggled and writhed beneath her, but she held me put with her knees and free hand. I couldn't see, but I knew she held the knife against my neck, since I could feel the cold, sharp metal already slicing my skin.
I blinked a few times, trying to get a good look at her. I could only see the silhouette of her form and hear the slither in her voice as she spoke. "This is for taking Sheldon away from me. We could've been happy!"
"You killed him you crazy bitch!" I shouted, still trying with all my might to get a hold of her without causing my own demise by pushing against the blade.
"I didn't!" She cried, but I could hear the sobs in her voice as she protested. "I didn't kill him. You took him away. This is your fault! You should've never existed. You should've never-" Her dialogue was cut short when I heard a loud hitting sound, and her weight fell from my body along with the knife from my neck.
My chest rose and fell in anticipation as I felt soft small hands helping me to my feet. Tears were streaming down my face as she hugged me to her body. I couldn't even tell if they were because of the pain in my eyes, the anger towards Mia or the fear that I almost lost my life.
My vision got a tad better as I tried to look around the room, Jessica still in a crying mess as she hugged me. I noticed that she managed to pull the rail from the bed with the cuffs, and used it to hit Mia across her head too.
Just then a little too late, nurses and security guards came rushing into the room. A second later and they would've found me dead on the floor.
"I'm terribly sorry mam. There was a hold up in the lobby we couldn't get passed because of the alarm. I have no idea where it came from" A male voice rushed out, and I knew immediately that Mia had planned it all. I knew she had people working for her.
"That's okay. She's right over th-" I was left confused when I couldn't see the outline of her body on the floor anymore.
I assumed my eyes were failing me, given that they were still recovering, but the gasp from Jessica told me exactly what I dreaded.
She escaped--again.
