Chapter 59 - The Turmoil
KING DAWN’S POV
Luna obviously ran away from both me and Shin; I haven’t seen her since I saw the both of them getting out of the basement, where Shin was keeping his women hidden in his cells. I’ve known the three of them for years, and Shin was the least dangerous one, while his brother, Nero, was the only one frightening.
I have no idea since when the tables have been turned. Shin seemed like he no longer cared whether someone got hurt; he’d even be the one to torture his own pack members, even if they were women. And judging by the rumors I’ve heard, he couldn’t care less if those women died since he was cursed to have no mate to begin with.
"With the way that you’re treating Luna, you’re just going to scare the hell out of her. She would never welcome you in that state," I seriously said to Shin, as if my words would even get to his brain. For all I know, he’d rather pretend not to listen to me since he’s that thick-headed.
Shin crossed his arms in front of his chest, then widely grinned, as if he were amused. "Are you that worried that I might steal her away from your possession? Did you think that I wouldn’t notice the marks that you gave her? One on her neck and another one on her forearm?" he consecutively questioned me.
I tightly folded my hands, which made some of my fingers snap. As much as I wanted to ask how he knew that it was me who gave Luna those marks, I just couldn’t give him any clues that I…
I am Luna’s mate.
In a distant area, I sensed that someone was running like there was no tomorrow with their continuous gasps. Glancing around the window, where almost everything was visible, I got to see Shin’s younger sister, Yuki.
"Yuki is coming here."
"I know."
"Shouldn’t we talk in private?" I frowned when Shin shook his head. "You still don’t give a damn about how your sister feels, huh. Yuki experienced the worst in her youth because of how rotten you and Nero’s attitudes were."
In less than a minute, Yuki showed up with news that I wasn’t expecting at all. "King Dawn, Luna is in danger!" She gripped her own collar as she continuously panted. "Luna would be killed by the wolves sooner or later!" she added at the same time that tears began to form in her eyes.
With those eyes of the Holmes siblings that never showed emotion, it was the very first time that I caught a glimpse of Yuki’s sincerity.
"What do you mean that my dear Luna is in danger? Why are you telling that to this useless person? And why are you still here after I clearly grounded you not to step out of your dormitory’s premises?" Shin scolded his sister like my presence didn’t even matter.
I looked at Yuki, and when I felt that she had something else to tell me, I immediately held her arm to pull her away from Shin’s reach, then ran away with her outside of the mansion, even if I knew that there was no way for us to completely go out of the pack itself.
"Where’s Luna? Where did the two of you go?" I asked.
Yuki placed both of her hands above her knees as she partly bent to catch her breath. I apologized for dragging her all the way here, knowing that she just got tired.
"I left Luna in a vacant room in my dormitory, but while I was on my way here, I noticed that there was a group of wolves staying in the woods. I know for sure that they’re up to no good; they didn’t look like they were only camping for fun or what," she explained as quickly as she could. "Can’t you find a way to communicate with her without getting near the dorm? Your presence there might make the situation worse than it is," she added.
I clicked my tongue, stopping myself from getting mad at Yuki for bringing Luna to that place without even making sure that she’d be safe all by herself there. I tried to link my mind with Luna, but it wasn’t getting through. She’s too far away.
"Didn’t you leave her some kind of note for us to mind-link?"
Yuki sighed with a shrug of her shoulders. "It’s not like I already knew that wolves were there. And besides, if I knew, I wouldn’t have left her there even if she forced me to fetch you."
"Fetch me?"
"Luna insisted that she wanted you to be there with her. She must be feeling guilty about the fact that she’s the reason why you came here and now you can’t go back to your own place," Yuki mumbled.
I slightly raised my hand to gesture for her to stop talking for a while when I felt a tiny bit of connection with someone. "Who’s there?" I inquired, which I repeated when no one gave me a response. "Is anyone there?"
"This is Luna Asterbelle speaking. Who are you?" she replied with the same type of query.
When I finally got connected with her, I explained the situation and the gist of what Yuki told me just now. The least I could do was warn her.
"Why didn’t you say that you were coming over there?" Yuki asked me after I got disconnected from Luna.
"You mentioned that my presence might put Luna’s life at risk more than it already is." I suddenly bit my lower lip, which wasn’t that painful. "Regardless, I’ll haunt those wolves who dared to harm Luna and the rest of the people who are there," I muttered with full determination. "So… why did you choose me over your brother? Didn’t you know that Shin chose Luna as his chosen mate yet?"
With the way that Yuki’s eyes didn’t widen, she probably already heard about it. "Well, Luna looked like she had more faith in you than my brother. She wouldn’t ask me to bring the both of you to where I live if she wanted to stay with Shin."
She has a point.
Before more time went to waste, I started to walk in the direction where their dormitory was located. Yuki accompanied me all the way, despite the fear that she might be locked up by Shin for the rest of her life.
The path was bumpy. At first, I thought it was only due to the stones on the ground, but then I noticed that there were several children who were all firing with their respective weapons.
"Why are kids allowed to hold guns?" I whispered to myself.
"It’s our only method for us, students, to survive in this world. If we stopped training even once since the day we were born, we would be hopeless. We won’t be able to protect ourselves from the catastrophe that awaits us," Yuki answered even though I wasn’t directly asking her. "But then, our pack was unfortunate to be cursed with a virus, something that we wouldn’t be able to physically attack and defend," she added with a bitter laugh.
Their situation was ultimately worse than the Dark Shadow Clan’s.
"Something’s not right," I said shortly after I finished checking the students’ faces.
"What?"
"Luna isn’t there."
