Killian couldn't keep his promise. As soon as Thomas had offered to keep Samantha a little company, the next phone call had already come in. This time it was Dominik and he rarely had good news. Same today. While authorities were investigating his mother's suicide, some of the cops in the area seemed to be using the incident as an excellent excuse to poke their noses into things that were absolutely none of their business. His connections to various highly criminal subjects made Killian a target for years and especially detective Arnold Spencer apparently had a crush on him. The middle-aged man with more years of service than Killian's birthdays was waiting for him downstairs in reception.
For a moment, Killian's gaze fell on his new hostess, who according to Samantha was madly in love with him, and sure enough, as he turned the corner to greet the cop, she looked up at him with rosy cheeks. He didn't even remember her name and otherwise he didn't care about the girl's feelings. Different from that of the officer in front of him. As long as Arnold Spencer felt the need to fight this town's rampant crime. The man would cling to him like a bloody bloodhound. Normally Spencer didn't get close enough to bite his pant leg and Killian had a blast leading the mutt by the nose. But today everything was different.
Adrenaline was still pounding in his ears. He had come so close to kissing Samantha dishonoring her mouth and destroying everything that kept him alive. Without Samantha he had nothing. No motives, no future. He just had no reason to continue to exist. He finally had to get this craving under control and vent himself. But Spencer was extremely unfavorable for this.
Trying to pull on his trademark arrogant business smile, Killian once again pointed out how little the policeman was impressed, but held it back as he held out his hand in greeting. "Good morning, detective. What can I do for you?" Killian asked, his voice sounding raspier than he remembered. Spencer gripped his hand briefly. The man's fingers were rough and calloused and the pressure was as unmistakably dominating as his own.
"You, unfortunately nothing at all, Mr Eveans. I'm here to speak to your sister, I understand she's staying with you for the past evening." Described Spencer coolly and professionally. Nevertheless, Kilian could not resist gnashing his teeth. He hadn't spent years trying to keep Samantha out of all this stuff, just to let this cop drag her into it.
"As I am sure you have heard, our mother passed away only a few hours ago, so I ask for your understanding if this is not possible at the moment. If you still insist, please contact our lawyers, who should make an appointment with your authority."
Spencer grinned. No doubt he had expected this or a similar answer, which made Killian both satisfied and angry. He wanted to get back to Sam, lost in her scent, imagining touching her in ways no brother should ever imagine.
"Definitely. So, you admit that Samantha is with you?" Killian frowned. He didn't like the malicious glint in the man's eyes at all. "She's in my apartment. "I'd like to hear that from you." "Are you accusing me of holding you against your will?", Killian growled, unable to control himself enough not to clench his fists in anger. As if he would ever hold her captive or do anything else.
"There are some testimonies that describe a very intimate relationship between you and your sister." Killian knew the rumors and he knew thousands of ways in which Spencer could have heard the rumors.
"These rumors have been around for a long time and if you have the gall to accuse me of molesting my sister, I will make you regret it." Killian would never harm Samantha, nor would he give in to what his father did had obviously succumbed. But the memory of how much Sam tempted him belied his indignation.
Spencer was undeterred, however. "I don't want to imply you at all, I know that the two of you have a special relationship given the circumstances care, but please understand that I still have to follow up on something like this. I have to make sure for myself that she's okay."
The slight smile in the corners of his mouth didn't escape Killian and they both knew the moment the words fell that the detective would get his way today and be able to talk to Samantha. Damned. Killian could have jumped out of his skin. He thought feverishly how he could prepare Samantha for this, how he could make sure that she didn't say anything that could incriminate him or his men. But he had never told her anything either, had he? No, he hadn't, but Samantha was easily the smartest person in this building. She was too intelligent to figure it out and Spencer would do anything to elicit something from her. It was a perfect opportunity for him that he would not let slip. Holy shit.
"I guess it goes without saying that I insist on girls speaking alone, without her or any of her employees getting a chance to speak to her, yes?"
Killian narrowed his eyes and stared deep into the officer's eyes before nodding mutely. Sure, he had to, and Killian was forced to allow it. A refusal would result in his entire store being scoured by a horde of officers in less than a minute, who would be tearing everything apart under the pretense of freeing Samantha. And sadly, he had to admit that he had no idea how much the police would find - but he was sure it would be enough for at least three life sentences.
