In Another World
"This is suspicious. Maybe someone used a spell on you. Or perhaps your memories from two lifetimes were conflicting? But you were perfectly fine before," the stranger pondered.
"T-two lifetimes?! What are you talking about?" Diana innocently asked and the man stared at her like he was distressed and filled with anxiety at her question. She had a bad feeling about it.
"Could it be that you do not remember anything of this world at all?" the man said more to himself than her. "What do you remember from yesterday?"
"As I've said before, I was doing normal household chores and work. Then I waited for my husband to come home. I fell asleep and woke up here," Diana repeated.
"To think I even prepared a really nice meal for Kristoph. I wonder if he ate it," she wondered out loud when it was supposed to be just in her mind.
"I am your husband now," the stranger insisted once again. He looked annoyed. Or rather, super annoyed.
"Fine. I'm sorry. Can we resolve the problem at hand first?" Diana sighed as she thought that she had to avoid mentioning Kristoph for the time being. The stranger was silent for a few seconds before speaking.
"It appears you do not remember anything of this world at all. I feel wronged that you forgot about me in the span of a day," the stranger said and stared at Diana.
Somehow, Diana felt guilty and avoided his gaze.
"We have been together for twelve years now but who would have thought that I am this easily forgotten," she heard him mutter to himself.
Diana turned to look at him due to how melancholic his voice sounded. His eyes were now downcast.
"It would have been fine if it was just me. But how could you not remember our son as well? Were we that unimportant? Did we hold no value to you at all?" he continued muttering to himself but Diana heard it all.
Diana froze upon hearing those words. Her chest tightened and ached. It was suddenly hard to breathe. She recalled the adorable face of the little boy from a while ago.
'How could someone ever forget that adorable kid. If he was mine, I would surely remember him.'
She gazed at the stranger's face that now looked as miserable as it was the previous night. She could see the turbulent emotions in his eyes and feel them emanating from him.
"It's not like that. You are both very important," Diana said out of nowhere. It just came out of her mouth but she felt that it was true.
"Did I just say that out loud?!" the stranger looked at her in a panic.
"Y-yes," Diana replied. It appears the man was supposed to have been only saying it to himself but unconsciously said it out loud.
"Please forgive me. I did not mean to blame you or anything. You must be already confused right now and yet I am only adding to your problems," the stranger blurted in a panic.
Diana eyed her hand that the stranger took between his. She held his hand with both of hers to reassure him.
"It's true that I'm really confused. I don't know if I exchanged bodies or if I lost a part of my memories as you are saying. I don't know what is going on anymore but my chest is aching right now because you look so miserable,” Diana honestly said.
The stranger froze and stared at her for several moments before his free hand gently cupped her cheek.
"Diana," he affectionately said her name as he gazed deep into her eyes. He looked immensely relieved that she was comforting him.
"Can I kiss you?" he suddenly asked as he leaned in.
"I, I-m not sure," Diana honestly replied.
The stranger paused when their lips were just an inch away from each other. When Diana did not pull back, he kissed her.
His lips lingered on hers and Diana once again realized that she did not dislike it. It rather felt great. That thought made her feel guilty as she recalled Kristoph. She gently pushed the stranger away when he was about kiss her again.
"We were supposed to be talking," she said with a light blush on her cheek.
"R-right," the stranger said and seated himself properly.
"You said that my memories were lacking and that I don't remember anything of this world. What exactly did you mean by that?" Diana asked to avoid the awkwardness. The stranger eyed her seriously at her question.
"This may come as a shock to you, do you still want to know?" he asked cautiously.
The seriousness made Diana nervous but she wanted to know what was going on and go back to Kristoph as soon as possible or she might fall for this guy. She was already weak to good looks, to begin with, and it scared her that she did not dislike kissing or sleeping with this alluring man.
"Yes. I want to understand what is going on. Please tell me what you know," Diana was determined.
She braced herself for what was coming but she did not expect that the stranger's next words would shatter the world as she knew it.
"Diana, you are no longer in your former world. You are already living your second life but you have memories of your past life."
"What?! Are you saying I died and reincarnated? I was perfectly healthy. How could I have died?"
Diana could not believe what she just heard, that she thought that perhaps, the stranger was kidding.
But looking at how serious he was, he was speaking of the truth as he knew it. She gulped. Her throat suddenly felt dry.
"It seems you do not recall all your memories from your past life as well."
"What do you mean?" Diana waited as the stranger seemed to hesitate. He held her hand before he continued speaking. He seemed to be worried about her.
"You died in your former world when you were twenty-eight and reincarnated here."
"I, I will die three years from now?" Diana gasped in shock as she tried to process what she just heard.
"Diana, you already died in your former world and this is your next life. You have been living here for twelve years now," the stranger gently explained.
Diana gulped. Hearing that she had already died was unbelievable.
The information that she would die three years from now scared her but the stranger had clearly emphasized that it already happened. She just could not remember.
"If what you are saying is true, what would be the cause of my death?" she asked and the stranger looked even more hesitant. But Diana wanted to know.
"Your former husband divorced you. Later on, you discovered you were pregnant with his child. But you were in an accident and suffered a miscarriage that led you to be barren your whole life. You said that after that, you lost your will to live and died in a hospital."
Diana gawked at the stranger, or perhaps she should call him her husband now.
Somehow, her chest hurt so much that it was hard to breathe and her head felt like it was getting pricked by a thousand needles.
"Diana!" the man cupped her face and dried her tears with his fingers. Only then did she realize that she was crying.
"Why does my chest hurt so much? Why do you look like you're speaking the truth?!" she sobbed and the man held her gently to comfort her.
Diana could not believe that Kristoph would ever divorce her. She wondered what was with the pain in her chest. If she was simply scared, it would not have hurt so much as if she had already experienced it.
"Are you really speaking the truth?" Diana asked once again.
"Yes. I promise I only repeated what you have told me before," the stranger assured her. He held her against his chest as she cried her heart out.
"Wait, you said this is my next life. Then why did you say that I have been living here for twelve years when you say that I am twenty-four now?" Diana's reason and stubbornness returned when she finally calmed down.
"You transmigrated into the twelve-year-old former Diana's body when you first came into this world."
"Former Diana? You are saying that this is not my body? What happened to the owner of this body then?" Diana could not believe her ears. 'Did I rob a young girl of her life?'
"She had passed on to her next life. Her name was also Diana. You are now the owner of this body."
The stranger further explained that Diana was supposed to be reborn without her memories. However, due to her fervent prayers, she retained her memories of her past life and she lost twelve years of her supposed childhood in exchange.
Meanwhile, the previous owner of what was now her body had also transmigrated to another world and was enjoying her new life.
"How could that be? All of this sounds so unbelievable," Diana still could not just accept it all.
"As far as I know it was also the first time that it ever happened. I have searched far and wide for any similar instances but found none. You were the one who informed me about this so I believe it is true."
Diana felt so guilty at how much trust this person was giving her. She had lost count of how many times she had doubted the truth of his words today but he believed in everything she had spoken.
"Are you sure you should trust me like that?"
"Of course. You are my beloved wife after all," the stranger smiled at Diana and lightly hit her forehead with his as he stared deep into her eyes.
"I believe in you. I will do everything in my power to help you regain your memories so you can judge the truth yourself. And even if you have forgotten me, I will be greedy and make you fall in love with me all over again."
Diana blushed at the stranger's words. Her heart was beating wildly and she had the urge to run away to hide her embarrassment. She could not believe that he was saying such cheesy words with a straight face.
"Alright. I will also trust you," Diana finally concluded that this person could be trusted.
"Can you tell me what exactly happened? I want to know the details of how I ended up here and how I became your wife."
The stranger seemed elated that she was now recognizing him as her husband since she referred to herself as his wife.
"That would be a long story. We would have to go back to twelve years ago when it all began."
