Bolo and Nut sat in a small office, the door locked, two beat cops guarding the door. They could have long since escaped, violently or silently. But that wasn't the plan. So they endured the tedious interviews, the good cop/bad cop shticks, the cajoling to turn States evidence on each other. Their stories had never changed from the beginning: they wanted to speak to a lawyer.

Well,whereareyourphones? Bolo had lost his phone maybe around the Kingsbridge Projects area earlier, Nut had gotten his stolen maybe on Fordham. The detectives interviewing them had looked at each other disbelievingly.

Bad luck and bad timing, apparently. The questions after that had been met with requests to speak to their lawyers. Said requests were in turn met with stony glares. So their detention continued. By now their phones had shut down and there were no more signals for police to trace, but what they had said about the last locations of their phones was confirmed as truthful by the pigs. They were allowed to use the restroom (escorted by two officers), send out money for food with any officer willing to do a food run for detainees, but they were not allowed to contact their attorneys.

They were barking up the wrong tree. Nut and Bolo would not break.

Right before leaving the apartment with a much subdued Ygritte, Nut had thrown lighter fluid on her bed and the couch where Julio had been seated and the areas on which his brain matter had splattered. He started the fires and calmly walked out of the building, getting into the vehicle with Ygritte.

The pigs had also known about Bolo and the manhunt had been on for him as well. Shortly after dropping Chulo off near Queensbridge, Bolo had rushed back to

Kingsbridge to get Nut and Ygritte. He dropped them off at Valentine Avenue, parked the vehicle in a nearby garage and took the train back to Harlem, specifically Washington Heights, where he was arrested coming from a deli eating a hero.

There was no evidence of any sort but they wouldn't get cocky. Even Bolo and Nut didn't know where Chulo was right now, which was for the best. Also, Ygritte had yet to be found but the children had been verified as safe by the pigs and in the care of an uncle or cousin on Fordham Road.

A detective came into the office and sat down behind the desk. He was a whip thin

blade of a man, dark skinned, all business, in a suit and tie. He wore reading glasses and in his hands were several files; he riffled through the pile and selected two, opening

them side by side.

"Dennis Garcia, aka 'Nut,'" said the detective. Nut nodded. By his accent, Nut could tell

he was a second generation Dominican, likely handpicked by the precinct administration to get in good with them, since Nut and Chulo were also Dominican. "Caleb Johnson,

aka 'Bolo,'" he continued, glancing at Bolo who merely inclined his head. "Let's start with Mr. Garcia. You may address me as Detective Perez. I'm with the Homicide Division of the 52nd Precinct. We have reason to believe that the life of your cousin, who is married to a wanted man by the name of Gary 'Chulo' Rodriguez, is in grave danger."

Chapter1

A.) Nigga - a term of endearment, an imprecation, an exclamation, congratulations, disbelief, a clarification, a threat, identification, etc. - AMONGST BLACK PEOPLE! Hispanics are often allowed to use the word because they are of Black origin. Even the whitewashed Hispanics who may deny their history know they are Black, a direct result of miscegenation between darker Blacks and their lighter-skinned (though still melanin rich) native American forebears (though many native American tribes had indigenous dark-skinned members). Please, White people: DO NOT use this word in its citified version: ("nigga") or the version so many racists like so much ("nigger"). The Blacks of today are not our forefathers and the repercussions to racists in this day and age can be instantaneous, severe and/or fatal, not even necessarily from or by Black folk ourselves.

B.) Blunt - an unrolled cigar leaf rerolled with weed (marijuana) inside in (usually)

cylindrical form to be smoked.

C.) Pig - pejorative used to describe police.

A.) Notes, meaning paper money on which faces of predominantly deceased presidents of the U.S. are featured and often referred to in reference to the monetary amount of that note, eg., "She gettin' them Benjamins" (one hundred dollars) might not mean she's

getting justBenjamins but, seeing as to how Benjamins are the highest monetary valued

"note" in North America, this statement would just mean "she's getting a lot of money."

C.) G'ed up - pronounced "geed up," it means "gangstered up,"; a "g" is a gangster, an

"OG" is an Original Gangster - a real, not fake, person. Stable, secure, reliable. D.) Coke - Coca-cola

A.) Henny - Hennessey.

B.) Jimmy hats - condoms (the dick is the "jimmy"). C.) Jizz - semen, come or "cum."

D.) Beef and broccolis - Timberland boots green and tan in complexion like the color of

Chinese takeout food "beef and broccoli."

E.) Stuntin' - acting like you're the shit, when you got on the newest kicks (sneakers)

before anyone else, you're stuntin'; when you got the latest car, you're stuntin', etc.

F.) Y'na'msayin' or "na'msayin'' - short version of "you know what I'm saying."

G.) Whip - vehicle, like "ride," but once you start getting into "truck" and "hooptie," those signify differentkinds of vehicles.

A.) Suped up - when something or someonehas been given more importance or monetary value or some other kind of value more than before.

A.) Trues - True Religion jeans.

B.) Bronnies - LeBron James sneakers, also called "Bron-Brons."

Chapter8

A.) Evisus - plural of the apparel company that specializes predominantly in jeans, eg. a pair of Evisu jeans

Chapter9

A.) Kitted out - when a car has many extra personal amenities, like tinted windows, a supercharger, lights under the car, etc.

B.) Jesus piece - the medallion on a chain, usually of "Jesus."

Chapter10

A.) Ratchet - in the sense mentioned in the book, a gun. In another sense, when a situation has escalated for good or bad, usually for good rather than the pejorative.

B.) Ups - Nike Air Force One sneakers, called Ups because of their prevalence in being worn "uptown" Harlem.

Chapter13

A.) Frontin' - lying or pretending to be more than who and/or what you are. Also used to expressed incredulity, like:

"Yo, he said he was gonna rob the bank." "You frontin', nigga, he said no such thing."

Frontin', like stuntin', could also mean showing off, mostly in a complimentary.
