39. Intrigued
I look in the direction where Oren was pointing, and I see a beaten woman barely breathing. Immediately run towards her keeping my guard up in case some lousy wolf appears.
"Oh my God, Oren! She is almost dead. Who would have done this to her?" I ask, checking the woman's pulse? She was alive, but without proper treatment, she won't survive for long.
"Oren, we need to help her!"
He opens his mouth to speak, but the dying woman interrupts him.
She was trying to speak, but the wound from her neck made this problematic.
"Is ok, we will help you," I said, caressing her forehead.
She grabs my hand with her trembling and covered in blood one.
"Shhh… I know it is hurting now, but everything will be ok."
Deep inside of me, I knew it would not be ok. She was dying, and there was nothing I could do to help.
"Sa… save…" she said, coughing violently.
I look at Oren, unsure of what she said.
"Save? Save what?"
"Child…" she managed to say before she choked in her blood.
"Did she say, child? Save the child?"
"I think this is what she said. But what child? I can't see one! I can't see anyone." Oren said, looking around as confused as me.
"I think we need to check. To be sure, we won't leave any child behind. Something's off about this place, something that makes me have a horrible feeling."
"Is ok, love! I'm here with you this time. You are not alone anymore. Whatever the case is, we will take care of it together."
"Oren, did I tell you how lucky I am?"
He smiles, leaning towards me only to plant a small kiss on my lips.
"I am the lucky one, gorgeous." He said, pulling apart.
We start checking all the places. Something was wrong here, and I need to find what. Maybe it will help us against Mateo.
'Amaya, do you smell that?' Ivy asks when we got closer to the packhouse.
'Smell what? I can't smell anything!'
'Exactly! There is no smell! But why? We are wolves; we all have our scent. But there is no scent. Like this place was abandoned years ago, the thing that is not true as you can see it was used recently. So either it is a trap or everyone here vaporised.'
'You are right! We need to stay alert.'
"Amaya, there!" Oren said, pointing at the packhouse. "This is the only one left."
"Let's go then! We need to check everything, Oren. But please, be careful, as this could be a trap."
As we enter the packhouse, I feel the air change. No one was here as well as in this whole territory. Yet, there was no dust on the furniture or spider webs to indicate that the place was deserted for a while.
We search the whole place, room by room, but find nothing.
"Maybe we can spend the night here. It is already late. It will be easier for us to go to your pack from here tomorrow morning." Oren said, hugging me from behind.
He was right, but this place makes me feel weird. I know I would not be able to rest if I stayed here.
"I don't know, Oren! This place is giving me goosebumps. Even the air is not breathable. Something bad was happening here." I said, turning around so I can look into his hypnotising pitch black orbs.
"So are you afraid then? With me here?" He asks, mocking me.
"Is not that. Is that… I don't know… There is…"
A somewhat muffled scream made me stop talking. Oren opens his mouth to speak, but I place my finger on his lips, making him stay silent.
I was waiting for the noise. If only I could figure out where it came from. But even with my wolf hearing, it was hard to do that.
'Amaya, let me take control. That way, our senses will amplify, so maybe it will help us.' Ivy said.
"Why didn't we think about this earlier?" I said out loud.
"What? What is that?" Oren asks, watching me confused when I start taking off my clothes.
"Love, as much as I want this, I don't think this is the right place. Besides, how is this going to help us?"
I burst into laughter looking at a frozen Oren.
'God! This man!'
"Is not what you think, Oren! I will shift and give Ivy full control."
"Oh… ok! Of course! This is a great idea. I was kidding anyway."
"Oh, Oren! You will get me killed from so much laughter."
"Amaya? , please finish your laughing session before your shift. I will have nightmares for the rest of my life if you start laughing again in wolf form. God! I can still see your face."
This got me on my knees. I was holding my tummy while laughing with tears. But I did how he asked. I knew I might look creepy doing this in my wolf form.
As soon as I shift, I start hearing fading voices.
There were so many that I could not make up for what they were saying. So all I could do was follow the noise.
Oren was behind me when I stopped in front of a wall. A plain wall. Nothing gives away any clue.
I shift back as I could not communicate with Oren like this, and we start looking around.
"There should be something here. I heard them, Oren. Hundreds of voices. They are here somewhere."
About two hours later, we were still searching.
"I need a break," Oren said, taking a seat on the cold floor and leaving his head resting on the wall behind him.
"Come here, love! Let's rest for five minutes. Then we will search again." He said, patting the place next to him.
The second time when he did this, our heads turned to the same wall where I stopped earlier, as an earthquake-like sound filled the air.
"By all Gods!"
