Chapter 33

"What?" Emmaline spoke, his words shot her out of the blue.

"There is no such law that an employee has to work for her boss just because he wants to. You have given him the money for infringing the contract and it's equal now. Yet he is bothering you so instead of tolerating him you can strictly report him to the cops. But as you said considering his stature that would turn futile. Then the only option to deal with the big fish is to slash him with the same weapon he is aiming at you. If he is using deceptive ways to track you down then why don't you do the same?" Matteo stipulated.

Emmaline was still in trance. Her eyes were narrowed because the words he used before his mighty explanation didn’t settle well with her. And now also his countenance had a lot of shades of gray. It was as if he was also shocked cause the way his eyes widened when she turned around looked as if he was caught red-handed. But he very cleverly morphed his face into a serious one.

Matteo on the other hand got cold feet. The words just slipped his mouth before he could realize. So, he deliberately chose words to divert her mind which fortunately worked.

"But what can I do? I can't work in your company when you know that he is much more powerful than you. If he can force me to work despite my resignation then that man can do anything." Emmaline quickly spoke as his words whetted her curiosity.

Matteo heaved a deep sigh. Stepping forward, he looked into her blue eyes that were staring at him innocently, "I can help you but only if you want to."

His reply threw her in turmoil. Wouldn't that be knocking at the door of death? She had witnessed the Alpha's wrath yesterday. She knew it was all useless but still decided to give it a go because Matteo sounded confident.

"B-But what will you do?"

Matteo shrugged, "Simple. I will attach all your documents to the company's records making it look like you have been working at Stefanini Enterprises since you lost your previous job. And now you are being forced to leave it since your old Boss, Damien Knight is harassing you and forcing you to rejoin his company. Now the matter will become legal and the entire responsibility to save you will be shouldered by Dad. You will get a strong backup and I am sure if Damien Knight confronts this and this matter reaches court, the verdict will be in your favor. Because no Boss can trouble an employee if he had resigned and completed all the procedures before exiting the building. He then becomes independent in making his choices like where to work and which company to choose. Even if Damien Knight is the king of New York, he isn't above the company's policies and the Employee's rights act. No one can deny them."

His words shot straight at her mind, opening the doors of her sanity. It was one of the basic and important rules of professionalism.

Smacking her head, Emmaline rubbed her forehead, cursing herself for being too emotional and irrational, "You're absolutely right. Damn, why did I forget so easily?" She mumbled but couldn't resist smiling.

Matteo noticed her brightened face. His face also lit up but their happiness didn't last long. Worry puckered over his brows when he noticed her face losing colors like a wilting flower.

"Hey, what's wrong-"

"No, I can't do that." She answered him immediately making him puzzled. Matteo extended his hand forward to comfort her but Emmaline kept moving backward shaking her head vigorously.

‘How can I do that? He will k-kill everyone.’ She mumbled; her breath turned erratic as his threats rang in her ears.

“Don't make a scene or else you would be responsible for the carnage.”

"Accept me and I will let everything go."

"You have no idea to what extent I can go to make you mine. You have already seen the trailer don't force me to show you the whole picture. So, better come to me on your own without throwing any fits and be mine."

No matter how safe his advice was, no matter how badly she wanted to leap on that lifeline but she can’t. Just to save herself she can’t push those innocents into a hellhole.

Matteo kept staring at Emmaline who without saying a word abruptly turned around and ran away. His hands froze in midair as he watched her scurrying away while bumping into others.

Matteo remained rooted on spot, still not able to believe what just happened.

"What made her this scared that she left even when I showed her a way to get rid of his slavery?" He vaguely wondered.

"I think it's high time I should delve into it."

Next morning

At Knight Enterprises

The ringing of telephones, shuffling of shoes, whispers, and the harsh and fast clicking sounds of keys of keyboards was the only sound that could be heard in the four walls. But soon a pregnant silence followed as soon as the pairs of busy eyes caught a slender girl standing at the entrance with her hands. Jaws dropped while some rubbed their eyes multiple times as the employees of Knight Corporation stared at their ex-staff, Emmaline Dawson in disbelief.

But unlike them, Emmaline kept her expression neutral, her eyes were cold and empty. How her fate brought her to the same place which she loved and hated at the same time. And she was well aware that she would grab the spotlight the moment she would enter the building. Nevertheless, she made her way to the reception while ignoring the judging glares and snarky comments.

"I have an appointment with Mr. Knight." She told Sara who was already looking at her. But soon her eyes sparkled with mischievous glint mischief which didn't go unnoticed by Emmaline.

"I don't think so. Perhaps you entered the wrong building Ms. Because if I remember right, you had paid the amount for breaking the contract just a few days before" She spoke and threw her a cocky smirk.

Emmaline clutched the folder tightly in her hands while the muscles in her jaw flexed, "I asked you a question not demanded your opinion. And if you don't know then you aren't fit for the job. ‘Cause a receptionist who can't even remember the CEO's appointments should be immediately kicked out." She spoke sternly.

Sara gasped, her face turned red in embarrassment, "YOU DON'T NEED TO TEACH ME MY WORK!! DIDN'T I TELL YOU THERE IS NO SUCH APPOINTMENT THEN WHY THE HELL YOU'RE CREATING A RUCKUS? JUST LEAVE RIGHT NOW OR ELSE I WILL CALL THE SECURITY!!"

She lashed out at her, her body shaking violently in fury. Emmaline rolled her eyes in annoyance. Giving her a bored look, she turned her heels and headed to take the elevator.

"H-HEY WAIT!! SECURITY!!" Sara yelled in panic and soon a group of guards rushed inside the building. The other employees quickly make way for them as they too couldn’t digest the teen’s attitude.

One of the guards quickly lunged at Emmaline and tried to grab her forearm but a painful grunt escaped his mouth when someone grabbed his arm in a bruising grip before it could touch her. Surprised, Emmaline also turned around but she jolted when an agonizing scream rang in the hall as someone twisted his arm, dislocating it from his shoulder.

The walls shook in dread watching the blood-chilling scene. Sara on the other hand turned white as a sheet when her eyes met with the menacing grey ones that were boring holes in her body.

He was none other than Damien.

"It would be you not her leaving this fucking building right now," Damien growled and then looked at others who immediately lowered their head.

Sara on the other hand stumbled in shock, tripping on her heels in the process and collapsing on the floor. Emmaline also was confounded but her heart almost burst out of her ribcage when Damien suddenly turned his neck to her, his eyes were still burning.

"I-uh-" She stuttered, unable to form words but Damien completely ignored her babbling. Marching forward he grabbed her wrist in a vice grip and dragged her along with him.
