Chapter 7
Maureen came back!!
She returned to the hospital a week after Sophia was discharged. She came to see Dr. Simon.
"I... I was kidnapped!" She cried wiping her crocodile tears.
"Once I went back home after coming to see you and Sophia I was kidnapped the next day" she paused for a breather.
"Some people around still think my late husband has more money like before, they called for ransom and my younger sister who was around then couldn't raise any money... She had to sell the only home and property we owned Yet it wasn't enough for my kidnappers.
I was taken hostage for one good week with no food or water Doctor, I prayed for death to take me... but I remembered my dear Sophia... I started praying to get out and for God to keep her safe for me and... And he did hear my prayers" She burst into fresh hot tears.
Slowly she took out a dirty handkerchief from her old purse and dabbed her fake tears.
Maureen looked so haggard and dirty sitting before the doctor all pride lost.
Her plans boomeranged quickly and unexpectedly.
Doctor Simon adjusted on his seat afraid she might be saying the truth.
"Am sorry ma'am to hear that, I came over to your house a few days later but no one was around. I even asked your neighbors but they knew nothing so how did you make it out alive?" He asked pinning her with his ever-suspicious look.
"Oh, my God was ever faithful!" She smiled with joy.
"I was rescued by a good man who lived around the vicinity where I was kept. It was a tough moment for me I doubted at a point I'd ever see my daughter b...but he did it for me. And when I heard Sophia was saved by a good samaritan, I leaped with joy... Doc you don't know how grateful I am to you and the man who saved my Sophia. I'll forever be indebted to you and him... Thanks so much" She cried clasping her palms in humility.
The story was not so deceiving it had loopholes.
True she sold her late husband's house and fled but she wasn't kidnapped rather she was defrauded of her money which she plunged into a fast yielding business and now she was frustrated and desperate for a fresh start.
The tears and words flowed so easily through Maureen's tongue that Dr. Simon was convinced and felt pity for her.
"You're welcome ma'am, Dr. Stanley, he came for his house job and took interest in Sophia's situation luckily he has a good heart and money to pay the bills and she was taken care of. Your daughter is a lucky woman we were on the verge of taking her off life support if you didn't show up at a certain time then the young doctor came around. It's not me at all you have to thank the young doctor."
"Yes... Yes of course doc, I will... I am such an incompetent mother... And I know Sophia wouldn't want to ever see me again right?" She gazed at Dr. Simon for a determinant reply.
"Not really, she isn't mentally stable therefore finds it difficult to make judgments or understand her environment closely But I believe with you around and Dr. Stanley, she will get better but I warn you..... The chances of her walking again are very thin. Her bone was seriously affected.
We'll hope in the physiotherapy and on God"
Maureen sighed painfully needing to express her deepest sorrow before the old gullible man.
"Oh dear heavens please take pity on my poor self and help me. So this requires a lot of money right?" She asked tightening her hold on her left palm.
"Yes, I suppose you should help out so much here. The lack of money shouldn't keep her on that chair for life. It would be very bad for her mental health, no one wants to be a burden for life and she has her whole life ahead" he finalized.
"Yes, doctor I appreciate."
Doctor Simon wrote something down on a piece of paper and handed it over to Maureen who took it with enthusiasm.
"That is doctor Stanley's phone number, you can give him a call and talk things through with him."
"Thanks, doctor, I appreciate Soo much. I'll call him right away" She stood fervently and without waiting for a reply from doctor Simon she zoomed off.
She already got what she came for. Once outside she pulled down the ugly facade and wore the real her while smiling to herself in victory.
