Chapter 9

While still asleep, Nancy’s phone rang. She had already prepared her daughter and escorted her to go to school before getting back to the house and continuing to sleep. The time was a few minutes past 9 am when her phone rang. She lazily received the call from a new number.

NANCY: Hello (she said while feeling sleepy

CALLER: Is that Nancy?

NANCY: Yes.

CALLER: I have been given a parcel to bring to you from Mombasa, I would wish you be at the stage in the next 20 minutes since I am coming towards Mtwapa. I am driving a Matatu. Look for a Matatu written the big blue in bold blue letters, the matatu is also blue with yellow patterns.

NANCY: ok, I will be right there.

CALLER: Be on time, we will go to Mombasa as soon as we get passengers.

Nancy woke up, wore a pair of blue shorts and a white T-shirt. She then walked slowly towards the Mtwapa bus station where she had been directed by the matatu driver. When she got there, she did not see the Blue Matatu. She picked her phone and called the number. No one picked. She waited. After about 3 minutes, the matatu arrived.

Nancy approached the driver.

“Hi, I am Nancy, someone called me from this matatu to come and pick a parcel.” Nancy said.

“Yes, here is the parcel.” The driver said. He picked the enveloped parcel and gave it to Nancy. He looked at her hips and smiled.

“Eh! Sister, you are so blessed, God created you after taking a heavy breakfast.” The young driver said.

“Thank you.” Nancy said.

“May I have your number…” the driver said.

“You called me with my number.” Nancy told the man.

“Oh! sorry, let me save it then.” The driver said.

“Yes, that is my number, I have to go.” Nancy said and left without saying another word. The driver watched as Nancy walked away swinging her hips such that some other men even turned to look at her.

Nancy passed by some butchery and bought 1kg of meat. She also bought some vegetables. She was in the mood of cooking that day.

“At least cover yourself a little bit more.” The woman protested, “You know I am like your mother.”

“Relax, it is not that serious.” Nancy told the woman. She however got a lesson and covered herself with it by wrapping it around herself.

The woman immediately got busy washing Nancy’s clothes. As Nancy was eating, Pastor Nickson who had gotten Nancy’s number the previous day called her.

“Nancy, praise the lord.” The pastor said over the phone.

“Amen.” Nancy said.

“Have you booked a car yet?” The pastor asked.

“I told you that you will cater for travelling expenses.” Nancy said.

“Ok, I am giving someone your number to send you money. I cannot send you the money from my number. Don’t ask me why.” The pastor said.

“I know why, am not a child.” Nancy said.

“Oh! great. He will send you Kshs 10,000. Book a modern coast bus to Arusha. When you get there, get yourself a nice hotel and let me know which hotel it will be.” The pastor said.

“I am not going until I also get enough for accommodation. The average hotel charges around 5,000 per day. you don’t expect me to stay in a low-class hotel that might be risky for me. So, for five days that is 25,000 so you are sending me Kshs 35,000 now.” Nancy said.

The pastor was ready to incur any cost just to get Nancy. He had fantasized about her for so long and he saw that as an opportunity. (Story by Anthony Kerry)

“It is ok. It will be sent to you.” The pastor said.

“Fine. That is why I like you.” Nancy said excitedly.

Nancy avoided as much as possible from calling the pastor by his name knowing that the mama fua was listening to their conversation.

The pastor terminated the call.

After about 20 minutes, Nancy received 37,000 on her phone. She did not reply to say she got the money.

Nancy logged online with her laptop. She booked a seat for herself. She then began looking for a hotel to book online so as she would just go there as soon as she got to Arusha. After searching for a while, she settled for a nice hotel which she knew would not make the pastor uncomfortable while going to visit her.

After she was done, she laughed out loudly and told herself,” Men can do anything to get a beautiful woman!”

After about 1 hour, the woman who was washing her clothes was done. She then cleaned Nancy’s house thoroughly as they had a general talk. After she was done, she looked at Nancy, smiled and said, “Time to go, you can sort me out now.”

Nancy got for her Kshs 250, the usual amount she would pay her. The woman hesitated taking the money, looked at Nancy and said, “My daughter was taken ill today morning and don’t have enough to buy for her some medicine. I told her to just sleep and see of she will be ok.”

“Oh! no! what is she suffering from?” Nancy asked.

“I don’t know, but wanted you give me 500, maybe next time when I wash your clothes, I will compensate.” The woman said.

“Your daughter, are we talking about…” Nancy could not remember her well since she had seen her only once.

“Yes, she is in class 5 now.” The woman said.

Nancy picked her purse. She took out Kshs 1,000 and gave to the woman. “Take your daughter to hospital, there is a lot of dengue fever of late and she might have gotten it. Call me later to tell me how she is fairing.”

“Please, don’t give me so much. I won’t be able to repay you on time…” the woman pleaded.

“No, its ok. I am not going to ask it back from you. I know how it feels to have a sick child. Take your child to hospital and let me know how it went.” Nancy told the woman.

“Thank you, may God bless you and give you even more.” The overjoyed woman told Nancy.

Nancy just smiled.

The mama fua left Nancy’s place after hanging the clothes. Nancy was ok picking them later from the hanging line.
