54. The last witch.
Days went by after Arthur became king, and a little has changed. He was not a cruel king like his father was, and people could not help but mention that fact from time to time. Elena also didn't stop coming to the palace as if she was already living there. She now does everything in her power to entice Arthur, of which the whole palace is aware of. This attitude of hers has been irritating Winifred ever since she heard about it and noticed it herself.
Winifred was on her way back from Arthur's room to a nearby lounge. She needed to get some things like soap and stuff like that to wash her own clothes when she was free. Life has not been very easy for Winifred. Being someone that came from a wealthy home and who was born a spoilt brat, she never washed her clothes at home. Their housemaids did all the work for her and she did not worry about anything. Besides, they had washing machines, so it was even easier for the housemaid too. But life has turned on her now, and she was the one being a slave in a land she is yet to figure out how she got there, doing works for people and washing her clothes herself.
As she thought about this, she used her leg to hit the empty bottle she walked into on the floor, passing her aggression to the inanimate thing. "I wonder how everyone is doing at home. Do they even miss me at all? Will they be searching for me by now? I wonder if I'm going to die here." She said the last part and sighed.
Unknown to her, a girl was behind her listening to her rants to herself, so as she said she wondered if she was going to die there, the girl tapped her and replied, making Winifred jump. "No, you aren't going to die here." The girl said.
"Oh my God!" Winifred gasped as she jumped, almost falling to the ground. She didn't know someone was behind her, so it came as a shock when she heard someone reply her. "You startled me! And also, were you listening to me speak?" She asked the girl with raised eveybrows.
"In a way, yes."
"Why?" Winifred folded her arms as she turned to face the girl. "You were eavesdropping on my matter. Why?"
"I wasn't eavesdropping per se. I was on my own, walking away and I realized that you stood on a spot talking to yourself as if you were talking to an invisible witch, I decided to come to meet you to ask if you are okay." The girl explained to her.
"Oh…" Winifred simply replied. Then, she added, "I'm fine. I'm good. Sorry for disturbing you from passing. You can go now."
"You know," the girl started as she stared at Winifred with a smile on her face. "You know you're a special being, do you?"
Winifred scoffed at her statement. "Of course I am. Do you think I'm like everyone else here? Of course not, please... I'm special." The girl chuckled slightly which made Winifred to raise an eyebrow at her. "What?" She asked.
"Everyone is special in some way, true. But that's not what I meant. I was being serious when I said you're special. You're a special being. I can see it in you already, you just don't get it when I called you special." The girl replied her in all seriousness.
"And who are you to figure that out?"
"That doesn't matter."
"Hmm," Winifred folded her arms and moved closer to her. "So, tell me then. What makes me special?"
"I know you would not believe this and it might be hard for you to take in, but—"
"Just say what you have to say. I'm busy than all these intro you first had to say, please." Winifred snapped at her.
"You have to be calm to listen to me."
"Fine. I apologize, but be fast about it, please."
"You're witch." The girl suddenly blurted out which made Winifred look at her with a confused stare.
"Excuse me?" Winifred said immediately. "And what did I do to warrant that title?" She asked. At first, she thought the girl was insulting her, but when she started her explanation, she figured what she was talking about and that the girl was not trying to insult her in any way.
"Yes, you're a witch. But you're not just any witch or any random type of witch. You're the last witch on the surface of this earth that we live in." The girl explained and Winifred could not help but chuckle. She found what the girl was saying amusing, even though she didn't believe a word from it, its cute that she believes she whatever she just called her.
"So, is that supposed to be a good thing or a bad thing?" Winifred finally asked her. She seemed interested in the topic because to her, it sounded like she was reading a novel online, but she just kept her calm to listen to the girl.
"I think you're the one is supposed to bring back balance to the three beings world." The girl said.
"The three beings world?"
"Yes. The werewolves, vampires and the witches."
Winifred chuckled. "This fiction is getting even more better," she muttered to herself, low enough for the girl to not hear. Then, she faced the girl again. "And what about humans?"
"An human could be a witch. They're still in the three beings world too. But those are the main categories." The girl replied her.
"So, am I like some saviour to earth or something, like Jesu Winifred asked and chuckled to her own words which she found amusing. The way the girl kept telling her that she had to save the earth just made her laugh even more. She could not believe her ears as she felt the girl was just saying whatever she felt like.
"Hmm... you have always belonged here though, not anywhere else. I think that is why the universe brought you back to our kingdom." The girl said again.
"Hmm."
"You still don't believe anything I'm saying, do you?"
"I do not, really." Winifred chuckled again. "I mean, if you were in my shoes, would you believe it too? Would it not sound like gibberish to you too?"
"Not particularly, but I won't doubt it either."
"Hmm."
"Anyway, if truly I am a witch as you have said, why then don't I have any powers? Or aren't witches supposed to have some sort of powers or something, for instance, make people dissappear or cast a spell on them?" Winifred asked the girl curiously.
"You have your powers, you sure do. They are there within you, but just not in the open yet. Your mother had powers too and you have yours just like her."
Winifred stood there staring at the girl for some seconds before replying. "Uh, you knew my mother, how, are you sure?"
"Of course! Why are you surprised?"
"Well, I don't know her, at least in this world." Winifred replied.
The girl laughed, thinking Winifred was trying to make jokes. "That's so funny. Why would you say such a thing? She lived with you and your dad and according to what I know, it's your dad that sentences people to the house of Babylon where the slaves are bought by the kings of several kingdoms. Who then wouldn't know your mother? The wife of the head priest?"
"Maybe me? I didn't know my father either, it's one ling story that you'd call me crazy for, you'll never understand." Winifred muttered, but the girl didn't hear. When she got to this insane world of theirs, the few people she had as a family for a while was her father who was the heas priest and her maid. Her mind went to her maid and the cruel way she died and how she had saved her from getting bitten the other night. She smiled as she remembered this kind gesture of hers. "I hope she's resting in peace by now."
"Sorry?" The girl talking to Winifred asked her when she heard her say something, but wasn't sure what she said.
"No, no. I was speaking to myself."
"Oh, alright." The girl looked around and sighted Elena and Alice close to them. "Uh, I think I need to leave. By the way, the princesses are behind us." She whispered the last part in Winifred's ears before jugging out of the premises.
Winifred turned back to see where Elena and Alice stood and as she sighted them, they were staring at her already. They were only some feet away from her.
"I wonder what this one is doing in the palace after getting married," Winifred muttered as she gave the two ladies a scornful look before walking away.
As soon as she walked away, Alice and Elena burst into laughter. "Witch my foot!" Alice said and they laughed again. They had been there for sometime now, and they overheard almost all the discussion between Winifred and the girl she was speaking with.
