Chapter 6 (Aron's POV)
Let me tell you a secret.
I am an idiot.
Yeah, yeah I know it's not really a secret but don't crush my ego right away ok?
Everything was perfect until I had to open my mouth and ask Becky about her life.
Like it's not obvious she would ask back the same question, if nothing more, just to be polite.
And so here I am.
Walking ahead of her, pissed as all hell.
Not at her, I am angry with myself.
Because believe it or not, just for once I want to be just me.
Aron McNamara.
Not the owner of Code heck, not the poor guy that his own mother abandoned, not a man with high iq.
Just my usual self.
Like I was a few years ago when I just started building my company. Back then I was just one of many hackers that enjoyed his job.
Don't get me wrong, I still love my job, but not the part with papers.
That's why I hired Rachel in the first place.
She didn't care how much money I had in my account, she didn't try to seduce me or get me in her bed, and honestly, she was overqualified with her intelligence, so I was grateful when she decided to stay in the company as my secretary.
But right now I had a different issue at hand.
Just as I was thinking about a way to apologize to Becky, a small hand took hold of my elbow.
"Hey. I have no idea what I said but I am sorry that I upset you. Can we rewind the last part of our conversation please?"
It felt like a huge rock was lifted from my shoulders at her words.
I gave her my trademark smile, but somehow for the first time ever, it felt like it was fake.
Which it kind of was, since it was my farce for so long.
But I wouldn't dwell on it right now.
"Don't worry. You did nothing wrong. It's just my head messin with me."
She gave me a look that told me we would get back to this issue at some point.
But I was just relieved she wouldn't dig right now.
I will find a way to avoid those topics in the future.
We continued to my favorite restaurant in London.
"Vicky's heaven" was just a little bar once upon a time, but with a little help from an anonymous donor she managed to upgrade to a nice restaurant with delicious food.
Vicky was one of my childhood friends, who knew everything about my past.
And I know what's going through your mind right now, and let me tell you, you can delete those thoughts.
What me and Vicky had was always platonic.
She was nothing more than a friend, and since she always tried to set me up with her girlfriends I'd say we were on the same page.
As we stepped inside my hand ended up on Becky's lower back.
She stiffened for a minute but relaxed just as quickly.
When the girl at the front desk saw us she gave me a huge smile.
"Hey Aron. Your usual table?"
I returned her smile with a polite one.
"Hey Summer. I need a table for two actually. If you have any by the window it would be amazing."
A scowl appeared on her usually cheerful face and she gave Becky a onceover.
What the hell?
I looked between them, because honestly, I had no clue what was going on.
Becky lifted her chin proudly and returned the scowl she was receiving from Summer.
"Oh."
Was all Summer said before she took out a menu and led us towards a table that was indeed situated by a window.
Once we were seated she turned around and stomped back to the front desk.
I was still confused about Summer's behavior when suddenly Becky started chuckling next to me.
"What?"
She just kept chuckling for a few moments before she turned my way.
"You know this right now was the best thing that I've encountered in a long time."
I was still looking at her with an expression best described as: "what the fuck?"
"You see, that little scowling thing right there wants you badly. And you don't even notice her!"
"What? Summer? No way. I am a regular customer in this restaurant and I am sure it's not like that."
"Oh believe me. I would recognize a territorial jealous woman from miles away. And she was both."
I was thinking about her words when a shadow suddenly fell on our table.
"Well, well. I think I need to have my eyes checked ASAP. My best friend actually found himself a woman and he brought her to meet me. I was thinking this day would never come."
I need to ask myself, why in the everloving hell did I decide to come here?
"Becky, meet Vicky, one of my oldest friends and sometimes a real nightmare. Vicky, meet Becky, my temporary secretary."
Vicky's eyes were as wide as saucers while Becky was as red as a tomato from holding in her laugh.
"Oh, so an office romance. Damn I like it. Hi. I am Vicky. Nice to meet you. And if you need any dirt on this guy, don't hesitate to ask."
Becky couldn't contain her laugh anymore and she started laughing uncontrollably.
I think one way or another, today's lunch will not be forgotten any time soon.
