Ronick glanced at the place where the matchbox disappeared with a lost expression, and whispered to the black state trooper, "I'm sorry about your partner. We've temporarily put him in the office next door."

"Why don't you have an alarm at the back door?" complained a black state trooper named Jeffrey. The drug hadn't started to take effect yet, but he was already starting to feel drowsy from losing too much blood.
