Chapter 1234 Don't Wait for Me to Land on the Island
The man was around forty years old, of medium build, wearing a crisp officer's uniform with the rank of lieutenant colonel on his shoulders. He had a sharp and capable look on his face and was none other than Xu Zhigang, Commander Lu Chong's current secretary.
"Old Jia? What brings you here? And why are you in such a hurry? You couldn't even explain it clearly over the phone?" Xu Zhigang had a formulaic smile on his face, but there was a hint of probing in his eyes.
As a core member of the organization, he was naturally familiar with Jia Daiquan, Commander's old subordinate, and knew that the Commander had taken good care of him.
"Counselor Xu!" Jia Daiquan quickly stepped forward, lowered his voice, and spoke rapidly:
"The situation is special, so I'll keep it short. The girl in my car..." He gestured towards the SUV with his eyes:
"Extremely dangerous, but also...extremely important. I've managed to stabilize her for now. Until I come out, please keep a close watch on her at the highest level of alert!"
"Mobilize nearby sentries and patrols to form an invisible encirclement, but remember, unless she attacks first or tries to escape, never use force first! Repeat, never use force unless absolutely necessary! This is of utmost importance!"
Seemingly worried that the other party wasn't taking it seriously enough, Jia Daiquan subtly pointed to the sky again...
Upon seeing this, Xu Zhigang's smile vanished instantly, and his brows furrowed slightly.
He glanced at the SUV subconsciously. The windows were tinted with dark film, obscuring the interior, but Jia Daiquan's seriousness, even using the "highest alert level," indicated that this was no small matter.
"Extremely dangerous? And important? Old Jia, what are you up to?" Xu Zhigang lowered his voice, his tone filled with doubt.
He knew that Jia Daiquan was not one to speak without reason, especially under the commander's watchful eye.
"It can't be explained in a short time; it's a matter of great importance, and I must see the commander immediately to report!" Jia Daiquan said urgently.
"Xu Can, please! Keep an eye on her! Wait for me to get out!"
Looking at the beads of sweat on Jia Daiquan's forehead and the seriousness, even a hint of... fear, in his eyes, Xu Zhigang's doubts deepened. However, his years of experience in government offices had taught him what he should and shouldn't ask.
He nodded: "Understood. I'll arrange it immediately."
As he spoke, he pressed the earpiece and began to give instructions in a low voice.
However, while setting up the perimeter, Xu Zhigang's gaze swept over the enclosed SUV again, and then at Jia Daiquan's slightly tense and anxious appearance. A perfectly "reasonable" thought suddenly popped into his head uncontrollably:
How long has Jia Daiquan been in the local government? Could it be that he found out about the commander... cough cough, so he gathered up this "stunning beauty" and wanted to use this kind of connection? And he's doing it all so mysteriously, using "danger" and "importance" as a pretext?
Thinking of this, Xu Zhigang's gaze towards Jia Daiquan changed slightly. Behind that formulaic smile, a hint of indescribable... contempt and disdain quietly crept in.
"You, Jia Daiquan, you used to be a tough guy in the brigade, but after only a few days of managing local security after taking off your uniform, you've already picked up this kind of bad influence? You've got your eyes on the commander now?"
He shook his head inwardly, but showed no sign of it on his face, simply replying in a businesslike manner:
"Don't worry, Director Jia, I will do as you say. The commander should be in his office now; I'll take you up there."
At this moment, Jia Daiquan's entire focus was on the girl in the car and the photo, and he did not notice the subtle change in Xu Zhigang's eyes.
He quickly thanked Xu Zhigang and followed him up the steps leading to the interior of the Chongqing Military Region headquarters building, his heart pounding with anticipation for the upcoming report.
He didn't know how the commander would react to the photo, but he knew that he had brought about a huge vortex.
The fourth floor of the Chongqing Military Region headquarters building.
The atmosphere on the entire floor was more solemn than downstairs. The corridor was spacious but unusually quiet, with only the occasional soft footsteps or the sound of door hinges turning.
The sentries here are no longer the visible guards, but the more concealed mobile sentries and electronic monitoring nodes, yet the invisible pressure is everywhere.
The commander's office is located at the end of the corridor, occupying the best position in this Soviet-style building—facing south, with a wide view overlooking most of the core area of the military region and the outline of part of the Beibei settlement in the distance.
There were no fancy signs in front of the office, only a simple dark wooden sign with the words "Commander's Office" written in bold black regular script.
Two elite soldiers from the headquarters' direct guard battalion are always on duty outside the gate. They are dressed in crisp service uniforms, carry rifles, stand tall and straight, and have sharp and calm eyes. They maintain the highest level of vigilance towards every officer who passes by.
Apart from Lu Chong himself and a very small number of core personnel, anyone who wants to enter must undergo strict identity verification and notification.
At this moment, in the commander's office, Lu Chong, with his casual coat open, lay sprawled on the guest sofa, his eyes fixed on the game console screen in his hand, his rough fingers rapidly pressing the buttons.
As the screen flickered with light and shadow, Lu Chong's cursing never stopped:
"What the hell is this game from that crappy Japanese company? I'm actually losing health when I get hit?"
"Damn it, don't wait until I land on the island, or I'll arrest them all and give them a good beating!"
"Fuck you, I'll blast your mother with a 780mm round, you damn cabinet!"
...
Boom boom boom!
Just then, there was a knock on the door.
"report!"
"Go in!" Lu Chong replied curtly without even looking up.
The door was pushed open, and Xu Zhigang led Jia Daiquan in. Xu Zhigang glanced at his commander's unrestrained posture, his lips twitched almost imperceptibly, but he quickly regained his composure, stood at attention, and reported:
"Commander, Director Jia Daiquan of the Supervision Bureau has arrived."
"Xiao Jia's here? Find yourself a seat!" Lu Chong replied casually, his gaze still fixed on the screen, his brows slightly furrowed, as if he had encountered some difficulty.
A few seconds later, he suddenly remembered something and pointed haphazardly towards the small refrigerator next to him with his free hand: "Oh right, there's Coke in the fridge, hurry up and get me a can, I'm dying of thirst! I'm too busy here! Oh, you can take one for yourself, don't be shy!"
This unconventional and overly informal way of greeting people would likely leave outsiders speechless.
But to Jia Daiquan, hearing this was not uncomfortable at all. On the contrary, it was like a warm current that instantly dispelled the tension and anxiety in his heart, making his tense nerves relax a little.
The leader is still the same leader! He doesn't treat himself like an outsider!
"Yes, sir!" Jia Daiquan replied in a loud voice, a smile unconsciously appearing on his face.
He walked familiarly to the old-fashioned single-door refrigerator in the corner, grasped the slightly mottled silver handle, and gently pulled it open.
"hiss--"
A stream of white, cold air, accompanied by the low hum of a compressor, immediately rushed out from the crack in the door, hitting my face with a familiar, clean chill.
The refrigerator was dimly lit, illuminating several neatly stacked red aluminum cans of cola. A fine layer of water droplets condensed on the cans, shimmering enticingly in the light.
In the freezer compartment, translucent ice cubes are frozen solid in the square ice box.
Jia Daiquan first took out two cans of ice-cold cola, and the water droplets on the cans immediately wet his fingertips.
Then, he carefully took out a heavy old-fashioned glass, the walls of which were covered with a thin layer of white frost.
Finally, he took out a small stainless steel ice bucket from the freezer, which was filled with crystal clear, angular blocks of ice.
He quickly returned to the coffee table and gently placed the items down. With practiced ease, he tilted the ice bucket slightly, letting the frozen, gleaming ice cubes slide into the bottom of the glass with a "whoosh," creating a crisp, pleasant sound, and instantly coating the glass with even more frost-like white frosting.
Then, he picked up a can of Coke, gripped the tab with his thumb, and with a soft "hiss," the aluminum ring popped open, releasing a slightly sweet caramel aroma mixed with the unique tingling sensation of carbonation.
He steadily aligned the can opening with the rim of the glass, and the dark brown liquid, carrying lively, fine bubbles, gurgled into the ice glass.
When cola hits ice, it makes a soft, rustling sound, and more bubbles are released, like miniature volcanoes churning at the bottom of the glass, rising rapidly along the glass wall to form a layer of dense, white foam on the surface.
As the ice cubes were soaked in the brown liquid, they quickly became crystal clear, their edges began to blur and melt, releasing even more chill.
In the blink of an eye, a glass of iced cola with floating ice and rising bubbles appears before you. The glass is quickly covered with icy water droplets. Just looking at it, you can imagine the exhilarating sensation of the carbonation and the coolness of the ice exploding on your tongue with the first sip.
Jia Daiquan gently pushed the glass, overflowing with cool, tempting aroma, to Lu Chong's side.
