Chapter 10 New Job, Better Opportunities, and Drama

Getting up at five in the morning, I got out of bed and headed straight to the bathroom where I showered and brushed my teeth. Stepping out of the tub, I grab my towel from off the rack and wrap it around my waist. Going over to the mirror, I ran my hand through my hair to get it in place as it was messy. Walking into my room, I plugged in my straightening iron before I went to my closet and took out my black straight dress, and put it on along with my stockings. Going to sit in front of the mirror, I took up the iron and started straightening my hair.

Plugging it out as soon as I was finished with it, I wrapped it up and placed it on the floor in the far corner of my room before I made my way back to my closet where I took out a pair of my black six-inch suede heels. Quickly putting them on, I grabbed my purse and my phone before I ran down the hall to the kitchen where I searched through the cupboard and fridge for something suitable for my mom and I could eat for breakfast. Opening the cupboard, I saw that it was empty, going over to the fridge I opened it I saw that only water, butter, and orange juice were in it.

Taking out the orange juice, I poured some into two glasses before I started looking around the kitchen, trying to find something for my mom to eat. I can't let what happened the last time happen again with her ending up in the hospital. Finding bread, I took out four slices and toast it before placing two slices in separate places and buttered them. Taking up one of the plates and glass, I walked to my mother's room.

“Hey mom,” I greeted her cheerfully. “I know it's not much but this is all we got for now. When I am at lunch I will buy something and bring it to you okay.”

“Okay sweetheart, have a great day and tell Adam I said hello.” Nodding my head, I kissed her goodbye. Going back inside the kitchen, I hurriedly ate my toast and drank my orange juice before I grabbed my stuff and exited my apartment. Walking to the bus stop I felt uneasy. It was the same feeling I had experienced a few days ago when I was coming home from work and I honestly didn’t like the feeling.

I could feel a pair of eyes drilling a hole in my head and it was causing the hair on the back of my neck to stand up. Turning around, I started looking around wildly but I couldn’t pinpoint exactly who was staring at me. I was well aware that persons on the street were giving me questioning glances while some were giving me worried looks but I didn’t care.

I know I wasn’t crazy, I know someone is watching me and I don’t know who and why.

Getting on the bus that had arrived five minutes after I had arrived at the bus stop, I climbed aboard and paid my fare. Sitting down, I watched the houses, persons, and buildings pass by. Arriving at my stop, I got off and stood right in front of the enormous building that is as tall as a skyscraper and is made of glass, and the words Jacob Enterprises printed at the front in black and were written in bold.

Looking at the time, I saw that I was thirty minutes early. Walking through the doors, I went right up to the receptionist.

“Hello good morning, I am here to see Mr. Jacobs.”

“Do you have an appointment?” She asked without looking up from the computer screen.

“No, I don't, I was told to be here by seven-thirty.”

“Well you can go sit over there, you're thirty minutes early Mr. Jacobs will interview you soon.”

“You don––”

“Jacob Enterprises, good morning, how may I assist you today?” She answered the ringing phone, cutting off my entire speech. Walking to the chair, I sat down and patiently waited for Adam. My patience was starting to run thin, and I wanted to go right up to the receptionist and demand she takes me to his office. One and a half hours had passed, and my butt was starting to hurt. Letting out a frustrated breath, I finally got up and marched right back over to the brunette receptionist.

“Can I please go see Mr. Jacobs?”

“You would have to wait, he hasn't called me yet to send you up for the interview.”

“You have me mistaken, I am not here––”

“You haven't started your job yet and you're already late,” his calm voice came out from behind me.

“Actually, I was thirty minutes early but this bit-. I mean your receptionist had me sitting here for almost two hours,” I replied coolly.

“Why didn't you send her up?” He asked the receptionist, ice lacing his voice.

“I thought she was here for an interview sir.”

“Didn't I tell you I had a new personal assistant and she will be coming here at seven-thirty?”

“Y-yes sir but––”

“You're fired, pack your things and go. Come with me Ms. Martinez,” he said before walking away ignoring the girl's plea.

Walking with Adam I wanted to smile my face off but I couldn't, I felt bad for the poor girl. If I had known that he would've fired her, I would've told him that I had come late. But then I didn't want to lose the job that I barely got so to save her ass but I was going to try and talk to him.

“Adam, I mean Mr. Jacobs, you know you didn't have to fire her. It was a big misunderstanding.”

“I don't want any screws up in my company Ms. Martinez,” he said seemingly insinuating something.

Getting the message, he was trying to bring across loud and clear, I replied, “yes sir.”

“First things first Emily, I paid your mother's hospital bill. Being my employee, you have insurance coverage which also covers your family. Your pay will be three thousand dollars a month, you will go on trips to anywhere business takes me. You will be given a credit card to buy proper attire for work and business trips and dinner meetings.”

Walking into the elevator with him he continued. “Your office will be next to mine. You will set all my appointments, whether personal and business and you will find all the materials you need in the top drawer of your desk to help you get your job done.”

Walking outside the elevator that had stopped on the top floor, we exited and I saw a woman packing up her belongings and crying.

Did Adam just fire her too? I questioned myself.

“That's Mrs. Wilson, she was fired this morning so you could take her place,” he said while pointing at the older woman. “Mrs. Wilson, you would be the new receptionist down at the front desk.”

“Thank you, sir, thank you so much,” she cried while smiling.

“Get down to the front desk now!” He said before walking through a door. Adam was a scary man when he was at work. Barking orders and commands and firing a person for making a mistake. I don't have a problem with this as he’s the boss and he knows what’s best for his company but it scares me, what if I mess up will he fire me in a heartbeat?

Walking behind him into an office. I saw that it was huge, and it was painted in white, with a black desk and a black chair placed in the middle of the room and a black sofa in the far-left corner. Pictures of the painting were hung on the wall giving it the room life.

“This is your office and remember I am right next door. If you need me you can just walk right through that door,” he said pointing to the white door that I didn't recognize because it was camouflage––blending well with the white wall. “You can go to lunch at two-thirty,” he continued before walking outside the room. Walking around my desk, I let my hand trailed over it. The desk felt cold beneath my fingers. Sitting down in my chair, I couldn't help but smile.

I finally landed a job that has great benefits, is air-conditioned and better pay without even looking. Soaking in the glory for a few moments, I finally opened the drawer and took out the pad that Adam said I will find in the drawer and a pen from off the desk. Getting up, I walked to the door and knocked.

“Come in,” he called. Opening the door, I walked in and sat on the chair opposite him. His office had more space and was bigger than mine, it was painted in white also with the same color desk and chair but different paintings.

“Is there anything you would like me to do?” I ask.

“Yes, I would––” his words were cut off by yelling coming from outside the door.

With an angry expression on his face, he got up and yanked open the door. There stood a beautiful blond with long blond hair and long tall legs. Her skin had that glow to it and it was radiant. She was dressed in expensive clothing and was trying to get out of Mrs. Wilson's grasp.

“Adam, I have been calling and texting you, I even came to your house and you weren't there. Are you hiding from me?”

“Listen, Heather, I am in no mood for your foolishness today. I had told you that we are not together anymore,” he almost shouted at her.

“Adam, I love you, you love me. We did not break up!” She screeched.

“You’re delusional! Emily, please call security for me,” He spoke angrily.

“Oh, so that is the bitch you left me for!” She shouted angrily while trying to come for me. “Does she know I was in your bed a day ago sucking on your cock and giving you the best fuck off your life?” I could feel him shaking with anger. Mrs. Wilson's mouth was wide open and she looked very uncomfortable. Shaking my head at her, I got up and picked up the phone, and call security. There was no use answering her. She clearly was delusional as what Adam had said and a total psycho.

A few minutes later security came and escorted her away. She kept shouting and screaming telling Adam she loved him, while she was being dragged on the floor. Shaking his head at her, he closed the door in her face.
