Chapter 29 Nine: Dinner Invites can be Ruined
Adam
“Hey, James any breakthrough as to who might want to hurt Emily?”
“No none as yet, still working on it though, she had lived a simple life with no problems otherwise from the bullying, so I’m still unsure what motives this person could have and why exactly are they stalking her.” It was one in the afternoon and both James and I were on the balcony, drinking beers as we mulled over who and why this crazy person wanted to hurt Emily. Based on what James was telling me, there still was no lead. Sighing I felt so frustrated and damn useless. “It’s going to be okay Adam, we will find out who has been doing this to her soon and very soon.”
“But it has been a month James.”
“I know Adam, just please be patient.”
Taking a sip of my beer, we changed the topic to something less serious and began talking about sports, and before you knew it was evening which meant that I had to go get ready for dinner. My dad had come back two days ago and as soon as he stepped foot inside the house, he was asking Sophia to prepare for the dinner party that we would be hosting today. After chatting with James some more, I bid him goodbye before he exited my room. Going into my walking closet, I rummaged through my clothing until I settled on the perfect suit for tonight. Exiting, I got ready for tonight.
Emerging from my room an hour later, I went downstairs and into the kitchen to see my dad already seated at the table. Sitting beside him, we struck up a conversation about the business and how it was going. “Profits are raining in dad, the deal that I had made in Paris was one of the best things that happened for the company.” Smiling, he leaned back in his chair as he took a sip of his whiskey.
“Well that’s just one step in our operation we need to expand more, so you need to jump on the opportunity to meet Chase Moore. He owns his own company and with the two of you starting up a partnership with a third company will bring us the ladder even more.” Nodding my head, I smiled at what my dad just said. Chase Moore was the CEO of Moore corporations a law company so us coming together can really uplift both our companies and the one we will be building if we go into business together. Taking a sip of the water that Sophia had just handed me, I flashed her a smile as she smiled back at me before exiting the room. Looking at my watch, I saw that it was three minutes to eight and Emily was not here, panic was about to settle in when I heard the doorbell ring. I wanted to jump and answer it but I knew otherwise. Looking up at the entrance to the kitchen, I saw Emily standing beside Sophia who was practically beaming at me before flashing me a wink.
I wanted to chuckle but I didn’t want anyone to know why. Walking with Emily in the dining area, she was greeted by my dad who she gave a warm hug before she greeted me with a hug and a kiss on the cheek then sitting down in the chair that was opposite me. Sophia left us then returned with the first course and before you know it the three of us was chatting and laughing. After the first course had ended, I sat back and watch the conversation flow with me ease between the both of them. Taking up my glass that was filled with wine, I took a sip as I watch Emily crackle with laughter at the joke that my dad just gave about me when I was a little boy.
Looking at her with her head thrown back, and her eyes filled with pools of tears, the look of sheer happiness that was on her face made my heart swell with joy. The echo of her laughter was now forever echoed in my ears and everything I look at her I want to hear it. The image of her laughing I want to see it every time I close my eyes. I want this moment to be forever preserved. She was now my life and I’d be damned if I made a maniac hurt her in any way.
Shaking out of my trance, I look at him Emily who had concerned etched on her face. “Are you okay Adam?” She asked curiously.
“Yeah I’m fine my mind just wandered for a second.” Looking over at my dad he had that knowing look on his face before he offered me a smile. Smiling back, we all looked towards the entrance of the Kitchen where we saw Sophia who had a cake in her hand entering with James close behind. Placing it on the table she was about to leave when my dad invited the both of them to sit with us. I knew what was about to happen, my childhood stories were about to be told all night. Cutting a piece of cake, she handed it to Emily and gave her a warm smile which Emily reciprocated. After Sophia had given everyone cake, the question that I was afraid Emily would ask came up.
“So, Sophia do you have any stories to share about Adam? Emily asked as she placed a piece of cake in her mouth. Looking at me she flashed me a mischievous smile while I in returned rolled my eyes at her. Smiling she sticks out her tongue as she looked at Sophia, anticipating what she would say.
“There is this one time when I was cleaning the halls and I left him sitting a few feet away playing with his toys and I turned my back for a few seconds and when I turned around he was nowhere to be found. I searched in every room for him and I couldn’t find him. I was in the kitchen about to make a phone call when I heard rustling in the cupboards and just when I was about to open them when the doors were opened so suddenly and he came jumping out with a box over his head. The poor boy tumbled on his belly before getting up and running around the house with his diaper half on. I laughed until I cried and so did his mom when I relieved the moment to her.
Emily was cracking up and I could feel the heat creeping up my cheeks. They were all laughing at my expense and I was so embarrassed. Luckily for me, Amelia came in and told me that I had a call. Without even thinking, I quickly got up and make my way to my office.
As soon as I was outside of the kitchen, and into the hallway I was attacked by Amelia. Pushing me roughly against the wall, she put her lips over mine trying to kiss me while putting my hands on her thigh. I was about to push her away when I heard Emily shout, “bastard.” Looking up I saw Emily standing there with tears glistening in her eyes before she turned and ran away. Pushing away Amelia, I ran after her but by the time I caught up with her she was outside walking fiercely down the driveway.
Holding on to her hand, she stopped and I could see her body shaking from her sobs. Turning towards me she spoke, “I hate you, Adam, I hate you so much.” I could feel my heart been torn out of my chest and it took everything inside me to not break down.
“Emily I’m sorry I didn’t know that it was some kind of hoax. I don’t like Amelia that way.”
“Then why would she do that? She’s the maid.” She looked at me for an answer and when I didn’t give it to her. She started shaking her head while saying no repeatedly while trying to get out of my grasp. “You fucked her, didn’t you?” Disgust lacing her tone.
“I did but it was a long time ago,” I replied shamefully.
“You know I honestly thought that you could let me experience something different after what I had been through clearly I was wrong. You changed me, and you showed and let me experience things that I often dreamt off. It was real then but now it seems more like a fairy tale façade. It seems like I’m never good enough.”
My jaws were now ticking when she said all that it seems she was about to say something else when my tone of voice cut her off. “No, you listen to me, Emily. You changed me, you changed the entire fucking game and I would be stupid to not acknowledge, appreciate and treasure it. What we have is no fucking fairy tale, it’s very much real and I would be a damn fool to let that all go. So, don’t you ever question my lov- my feelings for you.”
She was now gaping like a fish when I finished saying what I did. I could see her eyes held uncertainty because of what she had been through and quite frankly I don’t blame her but I couldn’t just stand by and let her think that I would give her false dreams and hopes. Emily was now a part of my life and I am falling in love with her and I will be damned if I let Amelia spoil that or anyone else.
“I need time Adam,” her voice finally came out.
“That’s understandable,” I replied. Kissing her on her cheek, I felt her body melt beneath me and it took every restraint in me to not take her back upstairs and wash away every doubt after eating her for dessert. Going back inside I took up the car keys and drove her home. The entire ride was in silence and I badly wanted to ask her what she was thinking but I didn’t want to bring up what just happened. Dropping her off, I bid her goodnight before I drove home at a speed that would have me arrested if there were cops on the road. Arriving home, I rushed inside and I was greeted by a lot of angry faces. It was no surprise that someone had eavesdrop just to see what transpired between Emily which resulted in them finding out what Amelia did. Sighing, I put the car keys on the table before I called Amelia loudly.
“I told you, I told you if you didn’t fire that girl she would create problems for you, and look, she did.” I could hear disgust in James’s voice when he spoke and I felt really bad for what happened. I was so stupid, I should have known that Amelia was lying because there’s no hell in the way she could have picked up my office phone to know that someone was on the line but because I was so anxious to get away from all those stories that I didn’t even second guess it.
Coming into the kitchen a few moments later was Amelia. Looking at her I felt sick to my stomach. I know she did this on purpose and I could feel my anger rising. I wanted her out of my house and I wanted her out now. “You need to pack your things tonight and leave within an hour,” I spoke while staring blankly at the wall behind me.
“But Adam, I–”
“No fucking buts Amelia, just pack your things and go,” my voice boomed. Turning to look at her, she was standing there with tears running down her eyes and seeing her crying would often soften me a bit but not today, not tonight. She was the reason I was in this mess and I would be damned if I kept her around for it to happen again.
“Why are you still here?” James asked when he saw that she wasn’t making an attempt to move. Looking at me pleadingly, I turned my head away from her before I heard her footsteps receding. Going upstairs, I opened my office door with my key and went inside. Sitting at my desk, I opened the drawer and took out a glass and the bottle of bourbon before I filled it. Drowning it in one gulp, I filled the glass once again before I leaned back in my chair and began drinking again, this time a bit slower. I felt so empty like a piece of me had been missing and in fact it was. I didn’t know if she would ever forgive me for this, she trusted me and I broke that trust despite it not been intentional and I don’t think I could ever forgive myself for her having that look of hurt and betrayal on her face. I had to fix this, I need to make it right. I need to show her that I was sorry and that she was everything. I had to show her that I wanted her and this isn’t just some game to me.
