Chapter 33 Three: She’s Okay
“Emily, wake up please,” I cried out as I rocked her back and forth. Coming to a few moments later, she sat up groggily.
“Where am I?” she asked, her voice coming out shakily.
“You’re in my home in my bed, I found you passed out on the street with a gash on your forehead.” Putting her hand on her forehead, she winced and withdrew her hand and stared at it. She was still bleeding and I had asked Sophia to call the doctor and to also bring the first aid kit so I could dress her wound.
“What happened? Did you fall?”
“No, I was walking down the street, when I turned to reach in my bag, I realized I didn’t have it on my shoulders and the minute I turned around back I was hit over the head with something.
“This is all my fault, if I didn’t upset you, you wouldn’t have been placed in danger.” Holding her close to me, I told her to not fall asleep as she may have a concussion. Five minutes later, our family doctor, Doctor Richards came in along with Sophie who didn’t have the first aid kit in hand. Realizing that I was staring at her empty hands she explained that she spoke to Doctor Richards and he had told her that we should not dress the wound he wanted to have a look at it first. Coming over to where we were, he examined the wound before he took something out of his bag that he was carrying on his shoulders. Using his own stuff, he cleaned and dressed the wound before he put gauze on it.
“Good news she doesn’t have a concussion but the bad news is she has a bad gash on her forehead. If she was hit with more force, her skull would have been cracked. I felt her shudder beneath me and I know she must have been feeling scared. Putting her to lay, I told her to get some rest before we exited the room. Walking Doctor Richards to the front door, I thanked him before he left. Walking into the kitchen, I called out to James who appeared a couple of seconds later.
Going into my office, we sat down before I began to speak. “I don’t think this was a random act of violence James, I think this was deliberate and I think whoever was stalking her did this. From what I gathered from her, this person is a maniac and very jealous. He doesn’t want her around anyone. He probably had seen her tonight with that man and had gotten back at her by attacking her.” I could feel my anger rising and I had to pour myself a glass of scotch to drown it to calm down.
“I do agree with you Adam, I am still looking into who might want to stalk her but all I am getting is dead ends. Is there any possible way that you could ask your dad to use his private investigator to look into it? With the both of us working together, we might actually get some leads.” Thinking about what he said, I think it was the best way to go.
“I will talk to my dad in the morning.” Nodding his head, we changed the topic and began talking about golf while we drank scotch. We both got tired around the same thing and had decided we were going to call it a night. Going back into the room, I saw that Emily was still fast asleep. Climbing into bed with her, I drew her close to me and drape my hand on her back. I could hear her snoring lightly, and that was the last sound I heard before I fell asleep.
Waking up, I saw that Emily wasn’t in bed. Getting up immediately, I quickly made my way downstairs while shouting her name. “She’s in here,” Sophie called out. Following the voice into the kitchen, I saw that she was seated at the table eating. She looked awful––so out of it and I desperately wanted to comfort her but seeing as where we were I couldn’t.
“How are you feeling?” I asked as I took up a plate before sitting opposite her.
“I am still trying to come to terms with what happened, if you don’t mind I’m going back to your room.” Offering her a small smile, she excused herself. Stacking my plate with omelet, bacon, and sausage that was on different plates I began eating while staring into space.
“Adam is everything okay?” My dad asked as he shook me.
“Huh?”
“You seemed lost, I said good morning but you were too far away to hear. Is there something wrong?” Telling him everything that had happened, he seemed surprised that I had kept this from him.
“Why you took so long to tell me all of this?”
“I thought I could handle it on my own but James had suggested that I come to you and ask you for help. That private investigator friend of yours, could you call him and see if he could help James tackle this problem?”
“I will call him as soon as I am finish eating and inform him of the situation. If he takes on the case, I will let you know.” Thanking him, I excused myself as I had finished eating before I made my way to my room. Going inside, I saw that Emily was curled up in bed.
“Comfortable?”
Smiling, she stretched as she spread her arms and legs wide indicating that she indeed was. Chuckling at her behaviour, I went to sit down on the bed. “I know you might not want to hear this, but I think it’s best you take some days off from work and stay here to recuperate.” She didn’t answer for a few seconds, but then she finally agreed. Kissing her on the forehead, I got up and made my way to the bathroom where I went to take a shower and brush my teeth before I made my way into my closet where I got dressed. Bidding her goodbye, I left for work. While on the way, I called her mom to inform her where she was.
The entire time there I couldn’t focus, all was on my mind was images of her lying still on the sidewalk with blood spilling from her wound and the heart attack I will endure if I hadn’t found her breathing. I couldn’t help but feel guilty. I was the one who created a scene that made her leave but I had every right to. Yes, I admitted it, I was jealous of seeing her with him because she was mine and not his and I’m very territorial when it comes on to anyone or anything that belongs to me. I was also jealous of the way he looked at her, the way his eyes scanned every inch of her body as he drunk her in. The way he looked at her last night like she was hypnotizing and he just couldn’t look away all he could do was stare.
I was grateful for the fact that she didn’t look at him as she was interested. I still didn’t know why they were having dinner but that was a conversation for another time. I was suddenly jutted out of my thoughts by the ringing of my phone. Picking it up, I saw it was my dad.
“Good news son, he said that he will work on the case. He and James are speaking on the phone now. James is sharing everything you guys have so far, so they can figure out where to look now.” Thanking him for the information, I hung up. With the both of them working on this case, everything will soon fall into place and this maniac identity being revealed and he will be caught.
