Chapter 24: Jealousy is hard to control
After three years of traveling abroad to survey markets and establish branches, Hubert Roger returned home. The first person he met was Regina. As soon as Regina left Lightning Company, she saw a familiar white car parked nearby. Hubert stood leaning against the car door, waving and smiling warmly at Regina.
"Hubert, when did you come back?" Regina shouted excitedly, she ran towards Hubert and hugged him tightly.
"Miss me?" Hubert gently hugged Regina then patted her head.
"Of course. You've been gone for three years."
Since Myrna was busy meeting with Regina's makeup and stylist team, Regina decided to hang out with Hubert.
They hadn't seen each other in a long time, Regina missed him very much. The Lynne family and the Roger family used to do business together. So the relationship of the two families is quite good, since childhood, Regina and Hubert have been close to each other. They were the same age, so they went to the same school, the same class, and spent their childhood together. However, when they go to university, they have their own paths to develop their careers. Regina is passionate about music, so she studied at the conservatory. As for Hubert, with the responsibility of being the heir of the Roger family, he was sent by his father to study abroad and get acquainted with the business.
"I haven't seen you in years, you're getting more and more beautiful and loving, Regina." Hubert drove Regina around the city, his eyes would occasionally glance at Regina fondly.
"You're also very different from before. Now you look like a gentleman with poise and maturity. There must be many girls who adore you." I tease Hubert and see him chuckle.
"It doesn't matter how many girls like me. I care if you like me or not." Hubert made a joke but his thoughts were true.
"Of course I like you. We've been friends since we were young." Regina didn't notice Hubert's gloomier gaze, she continued to talk carefree.
Hubert reasoned that he hadn't been out in his hometown in a long time, so he asked Regina to hang out all day. Near midnight, when Regina said she was dead, Hubert regretfully took her home.
"Ah, will you take me to the mansion on the east side?"
"Hey, aren't you at Lynne's?" Hubert was surprised.
"No. I moved out more than two months ago."
"What's wrong? Roxana is bullying you? Or are they doing something mean to you?" Hubert Roger's voice turned serious, his expression cold. "You can come stay at my house if they don't let you stay at home anymore."
"No. Actually, there's something I haven't told you yet." Regina took a deep breath before continuing. "I'm already married."
"..."
Hubert suddenly swerved to the curb and slammed on the brakes. His face was white, his expression serious, his expression showing that he couldn't believe what Regina said was true. Only later did he start to speak.
"Are you kidding? Why are you suddenly getting married?"
Regina considered Hubert a close friend she could count on, so she didn't hide anything from him and told him everything. Hubert finished listening, his hand tightened on the steering wheel, the muscles in his body tensed.
"Actually, I don't feel like I'm at a disadvantage by marrying Darryl Rider. He's not too bad, and the marriage also helps my family." Regina was keenly aware of Hubert's indignation, so she quickly reassured him and pretended to be fine. She dared not reveal Darryl's true self for fear that Hubert would worry about her and do dangerous things.
"If your family is in financial trouble, why hasn't Mr. Joshua mentioned it to me?"
"Your father seems to have asked for your father's help, but..." Regina hesitated to continue, but Hubert had more than enough quickness and intelligence to understand what she meant.
The Rogers and the Lynnes were, after all, just a business relationship, not a family member. Hubert's father certainly wouldn't risk spending a fortune on the Lynne family, as that would easily put the Rogers in financial disarray.
Hubert put his hand on his forehead, exhaled, then punched the steering wheel hard to release his anger.
Regina supposed that Hubert was so upset because they were friends, Hubert must have felt disgruntled to hear her story.
"If I had returned home three months earlier, perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad." Hubert muttered. Finally, he quietly drove her back to Darryl's mansion.
Before Regina entered the mansion, Hubert hurriedly got out of the car and chased after her, pulling her by the wrist and holding her in his arms.
"Listen, if your husband doesn't treat you well, tell me. I'll make him regret it."
"Okay. Thank you." Regina smiled softly, then she said goodbye to Hubert and entered the house.
Originally, she assumed Darryl was asleep, so she purposely walked lightly to avoid disturbing him. Unexpectedly, when entering the bedroom, the night light was still on. Darryl was sitting in a chair by the window, a glass of sparkling yellow wine on the table. His eyes and feet, back against the arm of the chair, relaxed posture, but somehow Regina felt a little pressured.
"It's late, haven't you slept?" Regina quietly took off her coat and hung it on a hook and asked him wryly.
"If I'm asleep, how can I watch my wife get intimate with another man?"
Regina's whole body stiffened. She immediately understood that Darryl had misunderstood her relationship with Hubert.
"What are you talking about? We've been best friends since we were little. He just came back from overseas today, so..."
Before Regina could finish her sentence, a strong force from behind picked her up and threw her onto the bed. Regina felt a bit dizzy, at this time, Darryl was close to her, he looked like the devil in hell, his breath smelled of passionate and intoxicating alcohol.
"A friend? Are you friends who sleep together, make love, and hug each other?" Darryl's voice did not hide jealousy. "Don't forget you're my wife, how dare you let another man touch your body without my permission?"
"What's wrong with you, we're just friends, and we don't do anything as sneaky and shameful as you say."
Regina felt unbearable, her tears welled up, but she refused to cry. She felt her self-esteem was hurt when her husband suspected she was having an affair.
"Ah... can you still argue? As expected, from the first time I made love to you I knew you were a slut."
"I am not." Regina bit her lips in anger and denied.
"Okay." Darryl knelt on the bed, slowly unbuttoning his shirt and looking at her with fiery eyes. "Let me remind you whose whore you are."
