Chapter 33
Sewa heaved a deep sigh as she looked through the internet for any job vacancy. The past few days have been hard for her as she wasn't eating as she normally does. She had to deprive herself of some things just to save money.
Lately she has been calling Lanre's phone but he wasn't answering nor returning any of her calls. She wondered if something happened to him because no matter how, he'd always call her back once he saw her missed calls.
"Sewa!" She heard her name being called. "Ma!" She replied, knowing it was her mother that had called her.
"Food is ready, come and eat," Her mother said. She got up on her feet, closed the laptop she borrowed from Denny. She yawned and her stomach rumbled, she had not realised that she was hungry until now. She left her room to the kitchen to get food.
"Thank you ma," She said to her mother, collecting the plate that contained the jollof rice and fish. The smell filled and nostril that her stomach rumbled again reminding her that it needed food.
She sat down on the couch in the living room, while turning the television on before taking a spoonful of food in her mouth.
The time that appeared on the GOTV decoder made her aware of what she had to do. She was supposed to return the laptop by five. She didn't know it was getting late already as she was in her room sleeping until some hours ago when she got up to look for a job.
After finishing her food, she washed the plates, told her mother she needed to go out before leaving the house. She inhaled and exhaled from the refreshing weather, the wind blowing grazed her skin as she inhaled it, she knew it was going to rain this night.
She stopped a tricycle and told him of her direction before getting in. She had gotten use to the life of driving a car that entering a tricycle felt odd for her. She felt like she was a princess suddenly stripped of everything overnight.
She entered domino pizza, expecting to see Denny waiting for her but it was the reverse. She sat down while she dialled Denny number to tell her she was already waiting for her.
After some minutes, Denny came and they ordered pizza. While waiting for it, they engaged themselves in little conversations. While they chatted, Sewa couldn't help but be bothered within her as she glanced at her button phone nokia from time to time to see if Lanre would call her.
That act had not gone unnoticed by Denny who called to her attention. "Are you expecting something or what? You've been glancing on your phone from time to time now, is something wrong?" Denny asked her.
Sewa heaved a sigh, "I don't know but I feel something isn't alright," Sewa voiced out. She clicked her tongue while fidgeting with her phone.
"Is something wrong? Are you having a headache or what? What do you feel is not right?" Denny asked her with curiosity.
Sewa tapped her left leg on the floor unconsciously, "I think something happened to Ola, he hasn't been answering my calls nor calling me back, an unusual attitude," Sewa explained.
Denny sighed, "Maybe so, maybe not. You should be bothered, you suddenly gave up everything and now you are not hearing from him? Hmm," Denny chided.
"I feel you shouldn't be so quick into trusting him. Yes he is nice and all but the heart of men are never known even when you are their wife, you will never know their heart fully," Denny lamented.
Sewa shook her head, she didn't have the strength to speak much. Lately she doesn't feel too good.
"You know you should have known what your future would be like before quitting a life that gave you a lot," Denny said.
Sewa frowned. The last thing she would want to hear was anything regarding the life of a prostitute. She didn't want to remember that life neither go back to that life.
She knew she got so much connection through that life and because of that connections, she was able to attend prominent people of Port harcourt events and that was how she got to meet Lanre.
"I'd advise you to rethink your decision, you know I am your friend and I..." Sewa cuts Denny off.
"Don't even go there Denny. I don't regret leaving that life and I'd advise you do the same too," Sewa replied, her words coming out slightly harsh.
"I'm sorry. You don't need to raise your voice. Your mood lately is annoying to be honest with you.
Anyways, maybe he is busy, only God knows. How is everything going?" Denny asked, changing the subject.
"I'm sorry for raising my voice and didn't intend to. Just lately I easily get riled up and I don't know..." She shrugged.
"Everything is fine. I'm still looking for a job," Sewa said to her. "How are you my dear? Hope you are not stressed?" Sewa asked Denny.
"Let me gist you! The senator of Edo state just called me, my dear I'm going to Edo state tomorrow morning, big alert!" Denny exclaimed with excitement.
As much as Sewa wanted to tell her not to, she knew she couldn't. She wasn't in that situation yet to tell Denny anything. She remembered loving the attention she got from men and how the thought of money gave her a boost. She would do anything for money but here she was, doing everything for love.
Later that evening, when Sewa got home, she got a call from Lanre. Her eyes widened with excitement when she saw his call. He told her he was in Port Harcourt and wanted to see her but couldn't find her in her old house.
She explained to him that she had moved to another place and told him the location. Luckily for her, her mother was still in the market, so she quickly arranged the house and she awaited him with a smile on her face.
She hurried to warm the food in the fridge for him. After some minutes, the bell to her house rang, she rushed to the door to open it, opening her arms as she wrapped them around him once she saw him.
He was reluctant in holding her but he did. He wrapped his arms around her and smiled. "I've missed you!" She voiced out. "Why haven't you been answering your calls?" She asked him, leading him to the living room.
"I wasn't with my phone," he replied.
"Okay, that's fine. I was worried for no reason then," She said to him. "I'm coming, let me go get you food," She said to him but he pulled her back towards him.
"There is no need for that, I am not hungry," he said. His voice sounded distant and that worried Sewa. "Is something bothering you? We could talk about it you know?" She said to him hoping he'd open up to her.
"Yes, a lot of things are bothering me and it's about a certain person," He spat out.
