Chapter 39
Sewa's heart began to grow faster than normal as she couldn't take her eyes off the man who had just hit her. Her ankle hurts but the pain she felt wasn't enough to break her.
Both of them kept staring at one another as they forgot that they were in the middle of the road and cars had to stop because Lanre's car had caused traffic on the way.
Some of the pedestrians stopped to look at the incident in front of them and began to mummer. Those that saw how it happened began to insult the driver.
"Oga you no go carry her to the hospital? You dey mad ni!" One of the pedestrians shouted at him, snapping him back to reality.
"All these rich men na wa o!" One of the female pedestrian that had witnessed the scene clapped her hands. "Rich men go just the oppress the poor. See the way he dey even look her as if na her fault," the lady said in pidgin English.
"That's how they do in Lagos state. The girl can't speak, if it was me, he'd regret it!" The other lady seconded and they found their way.
The honking of cars made Lanre move a foot towards Sewa. "Are you alright?" He asked, finding it hard to speak to her. His heart shattered into a million pieces seeing her after all these years.
It felt as if those pains three years ago were back. "I'm...I'm fine," Sewa muttered trying to get on her feet but she crumbled back due to her sprained ankle. "Ouch!" She cried out, finally letting the tears roll down her cheek.
"Are...you alright?" He asked, then he mentally face palmed himself for asking her that question.
"My friend, take your car off the road! People are busy!" One of the car drivers at the back screamed. One of the LASTMA on the road finally noticed the commotion then walked towards them.
"Take her to the hospital Mr Man!" The LASTMA shouted at Lanre. "Come on, I will help you," he said. He squats down to carry her in his arms but she shoves his hands off.
"I can walk, i...you just go your way," she said, struggling to stand on her feet again. She didn't want him to touch her nor see her in this condition she was. It pained and broke her heart seeing him after three years.
She prayed to never meet him ever in this life for her own rest of mind and here she was in front of him. After three years, she was finally recovering but those wounds that she thought were healed began to bleed again.
"Don't create a scene, as it is, people have places to go. I hit you so it's my responsibility," he responded.
"Get your car out of the way!" One of the drivers shouted this time around. "You better hurry up! Are you mad!" He shouted.
Sewa suddenly felt embarrassed, so she placed her palm on the bonnet of his car and helped herself inside his car.
"I'm sorry," Lanre whispered to the men before entering his car. Once he was settled, he told her to wear her seatbelt before driving off.
It was so awkward for Sewa. Where she was going to was different from the road he was driving through. She wanted to ask him but couldn't bring herself to look at her nor speak to him.
After contemplating for some minutes, she took in a deep breath before she spoke. "Sorry, my house doesn't....my...house direction leads the other way," she said to him.
"I'm taking you to the hospital," he said sternly. Sewa could feel the coldness of his tone on her skin. She swallowed an invincible lump in her throat while trying to assure herself it would be fine.
"I'm fine. I will just apply a hot balm and I...I will be fine," she stuttered. She was finding it so hard to breathe beside him. She was so confused that her head wasn't thinking of anything at all.
"You aren't as dark as the night so how did you suddenly show up in front of my car?" He asked, his voice distant and harsh.
Ouch! She muttered within her. "It's fine anyways. I hit you and I will take responsibility by taking you to the hospital," he said firmly.
"But..." Sewa was rudely cut off. "I said I will take you to the hospital," he said. Although his voice wasn't loud, she could actually feel the disgust for her in his tone.
Sewa kept quiet immediately as she took in a deep breath. The awkward silence was back, both of them uncomfortable with one another's presence.
Lanre glanced at Sewa briefly and was instantly annoyed once he saw the short gown she was wearing. He scoffed as he held into the steering tightly.
He couldn't believe she still fucked around. He felt so disgusted by the fact that she went to please men otherwise why would she be dressed in an outfit so short.
The outfit Sewa wore wasn't really short, it was those dresses that would move up once you sit down by itself.
"You see why karma is a bitch!" Lanre suddenly spat out of the blue confusing Sewa. She said nothing in return and he shook his head. "You were just coming from your sugar Daddy's house right?" He asked sarcastically as he glanced at her exposed laps once more.
Sewa was offended by his statement that she wondered why he would accuse her so quickly without proof. As much as she wasn't to ask him what he meant, she just couldn't.
"Acting dumb are we? You still haven't quit? I guess you are never satisfied. You really want to satisfy our president right?" He clicked his tongue.
"Such a shame. The title prostitute must be an achievement for you," he said.
Sewa closed her eyes, took in a deep breath to calm her raging nerves. She was hurt, it was as if he had used a two edged sword to stab her in her chest. His words hurt her that she could feel the pain of her chest all over her body.
Her palms become sweaty, she refused to opened her eyes or the tears she was holding would come out.
"You know nothing," she replied, trying to control herself. Although it's been three years, his words pierced through her deep like a bullet.
His words were like a weapon itself, he didn't need a real weapon to hurt her and that's to show he still had a huge effect on her. She still has a bit of feelings for him.
"Of course I know nothing. I never knew anything," he replied. Suddenly he parked his car.
"We are here. Let's get you treated before you die and find something else to defend with," he said coldly.
"Take my back to where you picked me from, I do not want you to pay for my treatment," she muttered.
Lanre got down from his car, walked over to Sewa's and opened the door. "Get down," he said but Sewa was adamant.
"I will not," she retorted.
"Okay then." He said. He placed his under her knees and forcefully carried her in his arms. She struggled to get off but his hold on her was strong. "Let me go!" She shouted as tears began to roll down her cheek again. She felt embarrassed. She has been crying too much tonight, something she was over with.
"I will, once I know you are treated! I am not as heartless as you are, you know," he said making Sewa weak. She felt all the limbs in her body weaken after his last statement.
"I am not heartless," she muttered, making Lanre chuckle lightly. "You are definitely not heartless ironically."
