Chapter 44
Sewa blinked her eyes for more than five times when she hard Lanre's last statement. She was confused and speechless.
Just some days ago, he called her names and made her cry and now he was in her neighborhood to eat shawarma and now he was in front of her asking for her phone number and a date with her.
"Are...are.." she trailed off as she licked her bottom lips which got dried from the tense moment earlier.
"You can't go back on your words you know," Lanre said to her, interrupting her thoughts. She wasn't planning on going back on her words but she was confused by the situation.
She wasn't sure what he had in mind for her after all he could be looking for means to hurt her as a means of pleasing himself.
"I...I do not plan on going back on my words, it's just that...that I'm confused." She muttered.
Lanre clicked his tongue, "Confused indeed. It's easy, give me your phone number first and not just your phone number but your WhatsApp number. Secondly go out with me this weekend," he said.
Sewa hiccuped. Her eyes locked with Lanre and none of them attempted to take their eyes off. His dark brown eye melted her heart as she couldn't help but be mesmerized by them. It's been long she looked at his eyes and now she was looking at them, those feelings she has been trying to get rid of arouse her.
He wasn't doing anything but then, she wanted him to touch and hold her like he usually does. His hugs were the best for her and it's been long she got a big hug from anyone, most especially, Lanre.
As the moving air grazed her skin, she rubbed her palm on her arms and she felt goosebumps on her skin. She didn't expect an electrifying moment with him and at a time like this.
"Are you going to give it or not?" He asked, making her startle a bit. "I...I..." She looked around her then it clicked to her that she didn't bring her phone with her.
"I...I do not know my number off hand," she said to him.
"Are you kidding me? Or you just don't want to give it to me?" He asked slightly pissed and hurt. He felt she didn't want to share her number and that hurt him.
He noticed something different about her though. She was completely different from the Sewa of three years ago although he couldn't just conclude yet. She wasn't harsh, she was calm.
She spoke softly and smiled no matter what he said to her. She looked a bit slimmer than before and her skin looked rough.
"It's not that I do not want to give you. I do not know my phone number off hand because I just got a new sim card," she explained.
"Oh," he muttered. "Then let's go get your phone so I can get the phone number," he suggested.
"Wait here then, I'd go get it quickly," she said to him but he pulled her back by her wrist once she was about to leave. "I'm sorry but I will have to follow you for all I know I cannot trust you," he said.
"I'm seriously not lying. I will quickly run upstairs and run back down with it."
"Let's go together then. After all, all you've said to me from the first time I knew you till date are all lies." Sewa felt a pang of pain in her chest. Her eyes welled up in tears but she forced a smile onto her face to mask the pain she felt from his words.
Lanre noticed her reaction and he felt bad but he told himself not to. "Can we go already?" He asked.
Sewa nodded her head. She limped as she walked through the small gate of her house building. "Is it usually this dark?" Lanre asked her noticing everywhere was dark yet she found her way to the staircase.
He wondered why she was residing in a building like this. The stairs were small and long too. He decided to switch on his touch light so as not to fall in the unfamiliar area he was. As he followed Sewa's footstep, he couldn't help but admire how she walked.
Although she was limping, she looked seductive. After climbing the stairs that seem to have no end for Lanre, he finally halted once Sewa did.
Sewa was nervous, she didn't want him inside her house. She turned around to look at him, "Wait here, I will get my phone and come back outside," she said to him.
"Why should I wait here? Do you have a guest inside?" He asked inquisitively, Sewa frowned.
"I see. There must be a man in there right?" He asked with raised eyebrows. "Is that how much you think about me?" She asked with a voice much lower than she expected it. She wanted to speak out loud but lost the zeal from the pain she felt in his chest because of his words.
"Okay then. Come in," she said when she noticed he made no attempt to speak. Lanre heart broke when he saw the place Sewa's house. It was small, much smaller than his bathroom in fact. Millions of question came to his head but he couldn't just wrap it.
He wanted to know why she resided in an area like this and why she resided in a small house. He looked at the small room and the small student bed at the corner. "Why are you staying here?" He asked.
Sewa turned around to look at him. She noticed the way he was staring at her room and she suddenly felt insecure. "Here is my phone number," she said to him as she stretched out her small Nokia button phone.
Lanre's eyes opened in shock once he saw the phone she showed him. "Is this the phone you are using now?" He asked.
"Yes," she replied quickly.
"What happened to you?" He asked. He had wanted to ask the first time he saw where she was staying but shrugged that thought off but now he wanted to know.
Why was she residing here alone in a small apartment, he wanted to know why she was in Lagos, he wanted to know why she worked in a restaurant and most importantly, he wondered why she was staying away from her family.
"I don't get it. What happened?" She asked him back.
"Why..." He stopped himself from saying any word. He didn't want to be interested in her life anymore so it would be better for him to keep quiet and let it go.
He input her phone numbers in his phone and saved her name as that female. Sewa felt a pang of pain in her chest once she saw how he saved her number but she didn't say anything.
"So this weekend, you will go out with me right?" He asked. Sewa wanted to decline but she smiled instead.
"I will tell you the time and the place," he said to her before turning to leave with so many thoughts in his mind concerning Sewa.
Just before he stepped out of the door, he turned around to look at her. "Do not think I like you because I do not," he deadpanned.
