Lunch
KENZIE
My head hurt when I opened my eyes.
But not because of the alcohol I drank the previous night. Because I couldn't forget the feel of Wyatt's hands on my body, or the feel of his tongue entwined with mine.
I couldn't forget his taste.
I sighed heavily and looked over at the clock. It was late, but being a Saturday, I was off and didn't need to go in to work.
Or so I thought.
As soon as I switched my phone on I was bombarded with numerous amounts of missed calls, some were from Axel, but most were from Wyatt.
I decided to call him back.
"Where the hell are you?" He barked.
"Jeez, good morning to you too. Why are you screaming?"
"Did you forget to keep your phone on? Or were you too busy fucking around to care?!"
"Wyatt, it's Saturday. We don't work on weekends." I attempted to keep my voice neutral, refusing to let him get to me.
"You work when I tell you to. Get your ass over to my place, now!"
"Why?"
My question was met with silence and when I pulled the phone away from my ear I saw that he had hung up on me.
I rolled my eyes and went to get ready. Seeing as he had been so adamant, I didn't have much time so I took a quick shower before getting dressed and rushing from the house.
I caught a taxi to his large and fancy home, there was some sort of function happening there.
There were lots of posh cars parked around and a few photographers snapping pictures.
"Shit." I hadn't dressed to impress and I hoped that wouldn't be too much of an issue.
I got out of the car and rushed into the house, immediately hit with memories from the past.
I had spent so much time here that it was obvious this would happen, but I hadn't thought of that before coming over.
"Kenzie!" Wyatt came over to me with a scowl.
"What is going on and why am I needed here?"
"We are having a business lunch. You are one of our employees so you must be here."
I glanced down at my black pants and white shirt I teamed with sneakers, "I hardly give off the Grimes Enterprises look. You could have warned me to dress nicer!"
His brows furrowed slightly, "You look great. Come on." He put his hand on my back to steer me and I had to force myself not to freeze at his touch.
It brought back too many memories, last night being the most recent.
{PAST}
"Mr. Grimes!" I called while heading into the kitchen.
"Bubbles, how many times must I tell you to call me Wyatt?"
"Sorry," I responded shyly, "Caleb asked me to get more champagne, but I can't seem to find any."
Wyatt shrugged, "We must be out. Do you want to run to the store with me to get some more?"
I glanced back toward the party, I was extremely bored, "Sure. Let me tell Caleb, I'll meet you at the car?"
"Sure."
I went back out to the pool to Caleb, he was sitting chatting to one of the girls, not that it surprised me anymore.
"Your dad says you're out of champagne. I.m going to the store with him."
"Okay." Caleb barely looked at me when he spoke and I walked away feeling a little lost.
My birthday was coming up soon and I was wondering if I should end things with him, or if I should wait it out in the hopes he would change.
When I climbed into the car with Wyatt he remained silent as we drove away from the house.
"DO you think he will always be like this?" I asked. I didn't like involving Wyatt in my relationship problems with his son, but I was at a loss about what to do.
I knew Wyatt was the same as Caleb when it came to women, he always had a different one on his arm. It was why Caleb's mom had left him.
"Caleb is young and likes to have fun. I don't think he's figured life out yet. I'm sure part of that is my fault for the example I have set. But he needs to learn that it's fine to have fun up until a point. When you find the woman who ignites your soul, you need to stop and be faithful to her."
I turned to him, "Maybe he hasn't found her yet? Maybe I'm not one to keep him faithful because I'm not the one he wants to be with for the rest of his life."
"Then my son is a fucking idiot. And you are too good for him, Kenz. You deserve a man who will see what a catch you are."
{PRESENT}
I was bored halfway through the lunch with everyone talking business.
Sneaking away, I made my way outside to the pool, staring over the crystal clear blue water with a sad smile at what could have been.
"Hey."
I turned with a smile as Caleb came out, "Oh, hey."
"Getting bored in there?"
"Yeah. You know me, I've never been one for these types of events."
Caleb chuckled, "I remember. Dad would always find an excuse to take you away from them."
I looked away, at the time I thought Wyatt was just being nice, obviously, now I knew differently.
"Hey, Kenz?"
"Yes?" I turned to him, his voice sounded serious.
"I don't think I ever apologized for what a dick I was to you. I'm sorry for the way I treated you."
"It's okay, Caleb. We were young, it was silly to think we would have worked out. We're way too different."
"But that's the thing, Kenz. It wasn't you. I was n idiot who was scared of commitment. I thought you were always going to be there no matter what I did and I took you for granted."
I turned away from him, "It doesn't matter now. And I forgive you, so you can stop feeling bad."
He downed his drink, "I miss hanging out. Do you think we could try being friends again?"
"If Selma is fine with that, then sure."
"What are the two of you doing out here?"
I almost groaned out loud when Wyatt walked out.
"Kenz needed an escape."
"Well, that doesn't excuse you. The press is here, you are needed for interviews, get your ass back inside."
Caleb shot me an apologetic smile before heading back in.
Wyatt stared at me for a moment before coming closer, "I know my son well enough, don't get sucked back into that."
"You're one to talk. What the hell was that last night?"
He looked surprised that I had brought it up, "I was drunk and you looked good. It won't happen again."
"Good. Now, let me stop being rude and get back in there." I didn't want to go back in, but I wanted to be far from Wyatt.
