Her Guardian Angel
“Police had dismissed the interrogation and believed that it was an accident. Mr. Mason Gilbert is now in charge of finding new clients for the project and the reporters who were incriminating Ma’am have been caught.” Sara narrated the Mafia everything in one breath.
Tearing his gaze away from the shivering girl, Dylan looked at his most trusted man.
“Where are they now, Elijah?”
“In the basement, Boss.” The cherry-haired male replied to him in a crisp tone.
“Kill them.”
Dylan spat and shifted his gaze back to Sara who paled in response. But ignoring her terrified state, he commanded his men to open fire on his hostages which meant killing the twenty people who were locked in his basement.
Sara was busy processing what was happening around her when his men nodded and took their leave to accomplish their deadly mission, leaving her all alone in the room with a man armed with a loaded pistol.
‘They’re going to die.’
The thought itself turned her blood cold. A bead of sweat trickled down right her temple when she realized what a grave mistake she had made by coming here alone.
“What is she doing now?”
His sudden question knocked the air out of her lungs. Sara looked at Dylan only to find his black eyes trained on her, eagerly waiting for her answer.
“She- I- I told her that she didn’t have to worry. Things are in our control now-”
She tried to explain to him but words got stuck in her mouth when Dylan whipped out his gun from the holster and pointed straight at her.
“Lie and I will blow your brains out.” He spoke casually as if his words didn’t scare the hell out of her.
Tears of dread circled her eyes. Finding all the doors closed, she dropped to her knees and joined her hands.
“Mom drugged her, I swear. She wouldn’t remember anything.” Sara spoke and burst into heavy tears.
No words were exchanged after that which eventually ceased her sobs but they resumed when her teary eyes met with his cold ones. It was hard to predict his emotions but she knew for a fact that her answer not at all pleased the Mafia.
Her lips quivered as Dylan started approaching her with his gun aimed at her head. Once he stood in front of her, he jabbed his gun into her forehead making her cry out loud.
“Just like she did the last time, love.” He spoke gruffly. Sara kept quiet as she had no answer to his questions.
“I promise you, Sir, it won’t happen next time.”
“Didn’t I warn her not to double-cross me?” He ignored her pleas and again questioned her.
She vigorously shook her head in denial, “We aren’t betraying you, trust us. Mom forgot to remove your jacket, it just slipped from her mind. Please forgive Sir it wouldn’t happen next time.” She continued imploring.
Her heart sank because her sincere apologies only earned a dry chuckle from him. Dylan wasn’t convinced and it was her time to be doomed.
“Slipped? Are you kidding me, Ms. Forbes?” He said and snickered making her tremble.
“You’re well aware that I don’t believe in second chances, now, don’t you?” Dylan rasped and started caressing her cheekbone with the barrel of his gun.
“Nothing is forgivable in my eyes. What Stella did is punishable and you protecting her makes you equally guilty.”
Sara jolted after hearing his words. Tears rained down her eyes as the man cocked his gun and then aimed it between her brows making her close her eyes.
Her breathing labored while hopelessness clouded her mind.
That’s it, she was about to die.
Her ears perked as his thumb removed the safety and pulled the trigger drawing out a shaky breath from her chapped lips.
But nothing happened.
Opening her bloodshot eyes, Sara peered at the man who was looming over her while gazing at her impassively.
“You would have met the same fate as those bastards but I can’t do that. Wanna know why?” He asked her as if she was a child and stepped back to let the girl breathe.
She remained motionless but quickly bobbed her head when she noticed his gaze darkening.
“Then who is gonna report me all the news of my Evelyn.” Dylan husked and twirled the revolver around his fingers.
“I need you and your Mom. But this is the last warning. Next time I won’t be this lenient.” He spoke in a solemn voice. Sara immediately nodded and wiped her face with her palms.
“It won’t happen again. I promise.” She spoke hurriedly and got off the ground.
Sara didn’t waste a second and scurried out of the mansion. To her surprise, no one even stopped her and it didn’t take her long to understand that it was because of their Boss’s orders.
“What the hell!!”
Sara heaved out a frustrating sigh and punched the metallic door. She had been trying to open the door of her car for the past ten minutes but failed no matter how hard she tried.
“What’s happening?”
She mumbled to herself but a shiver ran down her spine when she felt a presence behind her. After what she went through those closed walls, she had lost all the courage to face her fears.
Sara didn’t dare move a muscle but a violent tremor shook her entire being when her eyes fell on a pair of almond ones that were visible through the glass window.
Clutching her purse tightly, she swiftly turned around ready to attack the mysterious shadow when she twirled around and pushed on the door.
A sharp pain erupted through her back making her cry out in pain. But she didn’t back down and shouted at the top of her lungs.
“HELP-Mmmpff!!”
Her screams were got muffled when a large palm covered her mouth and pinioned her on the car.
The man towered over her small frame. Her teary eyes fell on his chocolate brown hair, broad forehead, thick eyebrows, almond eyes, straight nose, and high cheekbones, and then to his fuller, pink lips. His masculine features and dapper style gave him an appearance of a gentleman but his vile behavior contradicted his personality.
Leaning closer to her face, he looked into her red-rimmed eyes and flashed her a smirk.
“Now that isn’t a nice way to greet someone, sweetheart.”
*****
“Argg!!”
Groaning out loud, Evelyn grabbed her throbbing head while massaging her temples softly. Her face scrunched in pain as she felt her head would explode.
Once her vision turned clear, she pushed away the covers and sat up on the bed.
“Here”
A palm came into her view holding a few white tablets. Evelyn was still in a daze so she simply lifted her head but the moment her eyes recognized the figure, she lost her cool.
“For headache. Don’t you dare consider them drugs?” Brandon chuckled and perched on the mattress. His gaze fell over her frail figure made him frown in worry.
Evelyn wasn’t in the mood to deal with him so she simply looked away and scooted to the other side of the bed. His smile dropped when she stood up and padded to the bathroom without saying a word to him.
“I didn’t bring you home.” Brandon quickly spoke. Evelyn halted but didn’t turn around.
He noticed how her shoulders got tensed. So, he kept the painkillers on the tray before standing up from the bed.
“If that’s what concerns you. Fine, allow me to tell you the truth because I am sure your hatred would increase ten folds if you hear from someone else’s mouth.”
Brandon spoke in his deep voice. Evelyn heard the pain in his voice.
She turned around to face him, “You will never be able to decipher the reason behind my hatred for you Brandon. Cause I never hated you.”
His eyes sparkled and a beautiful smile was etched on his face after hearing her.
Brandon immediately jogged to her and was about to hold her when she stepped back making his hand hang in the air. Hurt, he closed his mouth and pulled his hand back.
“That means you’re just angry at me.”
Evelyn looked at him for some time but soon let out a scoff, “You don’t hold a place in my life anymore Mr. Kim. Emotions are shown to people whose responses matter to you. Whom you care for and want the same in return. You get angry at your friends because you know that after some time they will come around. You can’t stay mad at your family forever neither you can hate them. And you don’t fit in any of these categories, at least not anymore.”
She snapped leaving him shocked. Brandon was too stunned to see her glacial eyes. He can’t believe that her bubbly Evelyn changed this heartless.
Without sparing a glance at him, Evelyn turned around but she had hardly taken a step forward when her left forearm was grabbed in a vice grip. She was about to retaliate when she was forcefully wheeled around and slammed on the wall.
“YOU HATE ME HUH??”
Brandon snarled at her face making her flinch badly.
“Let go of me, Brandon,” Evelyn shouted and wiggled, trying to free from his death hold but he only tightened his grip. She shrieked in pain as he was literally crushing her bones.
“NO, I WON’T!!,” He sneered and pulled her closer to his lips. Evelyn quailed as he was literally shaking in anger.
“Why don’t I hold any significance in your life anymore? Enlighten me my fault Evelyn because I am tired of dealing with your hatred.” He seethed but one could see the pain brimming in his eyes.
“Yes, I took Dylan’s side and for that, I was guilty, Evelyn. I wanted to apologize to you but you decided to cut all your ties with me. I couldn’t track you no matter what happened. I eventually gave up on finding you but I decided to investigate it. And do you know what I found out?” His pitch dropped abruptly which caught her attention. Evelyn look into his ruddy eyes which were filled with anguish and hurt. Her brows puckered in worry.
“Brandon.”
She mumbled, a strong urge to comfort him erupted in her chest but before she could simmer down, he suddenly blared making her jump on the spot.
“YOU WERE THE ONE WHO ABANDONED ME, NOT THE OPPOSITE!!”
His revelation left her shell-shocked.
Brandon glowered at her but her surprised expression confused him.
“What? Now don’t tell me that I am lying.”
Evelyn was still in shock but her anger resurfaced after hearing his mocking tone. She slapped his hands away and yanked herself away from his hold.
“What the hell are you talking about? I never cut you off from me. You never contacted me.” She retorted.
Brandon cocked his left brow, “Oh really? So, this is how you’re going to play with me? Trying to turn everything on me when I was chasing you like a rabid dog for the past two years.” He said and crossed his arms over his chest.
Her jaw ticked. Squaring her shoulders, she walked closer to him and grated, “Don’t throw mud slings on me, Brandon. And you know what? I don’t care anymore.” She spoke dryly and threw him a smirk.
“Nothing about the past matters to me anymore. I have buried it deep down so stop scratching the old wounds and move on. Just like I did.”
Her words didn’t settle well with him. Brandon let out a growl and grabbed the back of her head. Evelyn was caught off guard when he coiled his arm around her waist and flushed her petite figure to his chest.
“Brandon-” Evelyn squirmed and pushed his chest but her breath hitched when he reduced the distance between their lips. Threading his slick fingers in her locks, he licked his lips and made her look into his fiery dark orbs.
“Nothing is changed Evelyn, at least not for me.” He repeated her words. Evelyn narrowed her eyes at him.
“But your stubbornness makes me incandescent with fury. I want my old Evelyn back. I want my Cutiepie back. These misunderstandings have to be clear and I promise you that I will sort everything out.”
His gaze grew soft as he caressed her cheek with his thumb. But Evelyn didn’t melt and continued struggling to get away from him. To her surprise, Brandon released her.
She rubbed her bruised arms and shot him a glare, “It is easy for you to say that. After all, you have my Mum by your side.”
Brandon was taken aback by her jibe, “What? Aunt Maria? What are you-” he stepped forward and tried to explain to her but Evelyn cut him off midway.
“No need. You took her out yesterday and she didn’t even bother telling me that. Great move Brandon. You started creating differences between us from the very first day. God knows what you’re up to?” she spat and looked at him with disgust.
“I did no such thing, Evelyn. What’s the matter with you?” Brandon raged, the veins on his forehead throbbing as he was tired of her meaningless accusations.
Evelyn didn’t grace him with a response. She simply grabbed her right hand and before Brandon could understand, she dragged him out of the room and shut the door in his face, bolting it. Brandon was too shocked to react but the click of the lock brought him out of his reverie.
“I SWEAR TO GOD, EVELYN!! I DIDN’T DO ANYTHING!!,” he yelled and started banging his fists on the door.
“Get out of here Brandon or I swear, I’ll call the cops,” Evelyn screamed from the other side and backed away, fearing he would break in.
Brandon was incensed. His skin turned red due to anger. He vigorously hammered the door like a maniac but stopped after hearing her strained voice. He was scaring her.
“Damn it,” Exhaling loudly, he stepped back and ran a finger over his hair, disheveling them in the process.
“Hear me out Evelyn, please just once,” Brandon spoke in an earnest tone and waited patiently for her reply. But when he didn’t get one, he decided to leave.
Evelyn, on the other hand, had her ears plastered on the door as she heard his footsteps fading with time. She then released a sigh and leaned on the door. But her mind was still not at ease because his words kept ringing inside her head.
So, she finally decided to find out the truth herself.
Evelyn quickly rushed to the nightstand and grabbed her phone.
“Good morning, Boss. Mr. Smith had arranged the clients-“
“Leave that and first hear me out Joseph,” she rebuffed him making him clamp up his mouth.
Joseph instantly replied, “Yes Boss, what do you want me to do?”
Taking a sharp breath, she shifted her eyes to the door and answered him.
“I need you to keep an eye on Sara.”
