Make it work
115. Make it work
🤍🖤💜 Jacob 💜🖤🤍
We both lay on the floor in my closet, our limbs tangled in each other.
“We should go to bed… “I say, sighing heavily.
“No..” She whines.
“I don’t want a sore back again, Natalie.. “
We have been laying here for the past hour. She hugs me tight with determination so I cannot get up.
“This is not fair! “ I grumble. “You got a nice little mattress called Jacob… What about me?”
She giggles and gets up.
“I have news..” she says while grabbing my T-shirt to wear.
I look at her, and she drops the bombshell.
“Dad asked you to join us for breakfast.”
Ahh fuck…
“I knew this was coming…” I sigh.
I cannot keep sleeping with his daughter while avoiding him altogether.
“Don’t worry…” she says in a fake sympathetic voice, “I told him not to push you around this time.”
That makes me laugh, and she grins back at me.
“It’s not a pleasant experience to fall on your bum.” I tell her while getting back into the room. “How would you feel if my family asked you to join us for breakfast tomorrow?”
She frowns and crosses her arms.
“uhmm I am actually offended they haven’t asked me yet.” She says.
I think about it. She is right. Although we are seeing each other, things have not gone back to normal between our families yet. I mean, they are not sullen with each other now. But it’s still not the same.
“Anyway… wear something nice tomorrow. I have some plans.” I tell her.
…..
In the morning, Natalie leaves early, which she usually does. I promise her to join her family for breakfast. I go to see my dad while he is getting ready.
He looks at me and says, “Morning!”
Something changed between us the day I got arrested. Dad seems less blunt with me nowadays. I am not sure if it’s for good or bad, but if it makes our last days before college in this house bearable with no fights, then I am all for it.
I try to ignore the problems we had in past. As long as he is not being outright homophobic, I am fine. I have been told parents usually accept these things overtime. I am not dating a boy, so I will never know.
“I am going to see Natalie’s dad today.” I tell him.
I see his jaw clenches. My guess was right. Dad is still resentful about that day.
“I love her, dad… I want our families to make it work…” I tell him, when he doesn’t respond.
He looks at me and sighs, “I don’t know Jacob… I am glad you feel this way… But give it a year to make sure you guys are serious about each other-”
“Dad!” I cut him off. I take a breath to tame my voice and say, “I don’t care what happens after a year.. I need you back now.”
He nods, then pats my back. “You have my back.”
“Alright, Be ready for a dinner party in the evening. I am inviting them over.”
He laughs and says, “Ask your mom first.”
“I did that already…” I say and I leave his room to head out towards Natalie’s place.
… …
The breakfast goes better than expected. Mr. Relish seems relatively surprised and pleased when I ask them to keep their evening free, as my mom has plans to invite them over for dinner.
Natalie looks at me with her mouth wide open. I shrug.
“I never expected you will plan dinner so soon!” she says as soon as she gets in my car, ready for school.
Yes, she joined the school back and created a committee to combat bullying and harassment of students. She is leading a few programs by herself and has chosen representatives to handle sessions and support groups. Such things take time, but at least students are coming forward with their problems.
We never realize how big these issues are unless we provide them a platform to speak up.
“Where are we going?” She frowns as I skip a turn towards school and go straight.
I grin. There is something I have been eager to do ever since we got back together. I couldn’t hold it anymore.
“You guys haven’t sold this place yet?” She asks with her eyes wide when we pull over to our old place.
I chuckle. “I think Dad doesn’t want to let this place go. He has been looking for excuses for more and more add-ons.”
“Really!”
I nod. “This time he furnished the place… Who knows, next week he will suggest us spending our weekends over here,” I say, amused.
She laughs.
“Or maybe when June leaves for college, your parents will move back here.”
I frown.
Well, that is actually possible…
As I pull over, she seems overly excited to see the newly painted house. The architect went a little overboard with the facade of the house. It does look nice… and a little odd in this neighborhood though.
I get out of the car while Natalie waits patiently for me to unlock the door.
“Go ahead.” I nod at her.
She frowns.
“Why isn’t this locked?” she asks while opening the door.
