I only catch a fragment of his message saying he’s not coming back to base before I catch movement at the desk.

I shake my head wearily, calves aching as I lean against the counter. “Not yet. I was hoping he may have stopped by?”

Her eyes slide to Dexter, who’s idly looking around the reception area. “I’m afraid I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting the groom. The bride, however, has been more than vocal about the lack of facilities on offer.”

From the brusque manner, I wonder if she’s more than a little pissed off at Chelsea’s snobbery. She must know her best room is being used as an expensive changing room.

I’d probably be a little put out too. From what I can see, it’s a decent motel. Everything looks clean and tidy, if not a little old fashioned, but given this is a historic mining town, I can’t see anything deserving of Chelsea’s scorn.

If anything, the authenticity adds to the ambiance and charm. I make a note to place a great review on the motel and clear my throat ready to apologize for Chelsea’s insensitivity.

Dexter picks now to speak up. “I’ve had a couple of buddies from the Academy stay here with their girlfriends. Apparently, your eggs benedict are the best in town.”

The owner brightens considerably and smiles warmly at Dexter then at me. “Thank you. I’ll be sure to bring you both some in the morning. I’ll get you your keys.”

When she only picks one key, I start to say we aren’t a couple, but Dexter nudges my shoulder and gives me a warning look.

I’m not sure if he’s angling to get me alone in a motel room or being nice to the owner, but when he accepts the key and signs his name, my stomach starts to flutter with anticipation.
