Torty-four
— It was nothing... -he tries to calm me down. - It's closed! -he said showing his smooth skin, where there should be a hole.
"That prank was a bad idea!"
"Swear?"- mocked my little devil.
- I disagree. I even enjoyed seeing how agile you can be!
"So much so that I stuck a pen in you!"
"I already told you things like that can't kill me!" - she remembered.
- Yes I know. Nothing can kill you...
"About that..." he snapped, raising a problem. -I had asked myself what was the power of Daya and Falkor. What did Julie tell you?
- Forget it!
- He speaks!
"Something about fertility..." I reply confused.
“Well, Daya's blood helps those people who can't procreate, sterile diagnostic people. So through her blood, whoever drinks it acquires the gift of creation, becoming a fertile human.
"But why would something like that be important to an immortal?"
"What's the use of being fertile if we're dead?"
“For an immortal, it's worthless, but many believed that because she was Falkor's lover, she also shared his powers. That's where many wars were fought and some races annihilated.
— This Falkor... -I point out. -If everyone wanted him, why did they go with her and the other dragons?
"No one would be so foolish!" - she replied. -It was impossible to get close to him...
"Knew him!" - I say coming to that conclusion.
He wouldn't waste his efforts to evade the issue if it didn't bother him. It runs away and also shows fear when it goes too deep. And if there's one thing I've learned these last few months as Queen, it's that those who dodge too much hide something behind.
—Yes... -he assumed thoughtfully. -I met him!
"And what was he like?"
I don't give space much less interval, I need to know if this Falkor is the same Falkor that lives in my land.
— Great... -he says traveling in his memories. -It was all black with red details...
The problem is that with every feature he recalled, I got punched in the gut and knocked out of breath.
"It was the biggest, bigger than everyone else including Daya!"
"Hector used to say that one day he would grow so big that he would be able to cover an entire city with his shadow!"
"Isn't there a limit, a point at which they stop growing?"
“For Daya and the others yes, but for Falkor we didn't think so.
This is a very interesting topic, because I noticed that after returning to the cave the dragon was no longer the same size as before. The difference might have been very small, but a few inches had been added.
— It was impossible to know how far that creature could go, Mila. Whenever we saw him he got bigger and bigger. What disturbed us was not just his size, it was also his power that grew whenever the girl was close to him.
"Girl, what girl?"
When I finally think I understand everything about dragons, they see me with more things showing that I don't know anything.
"You said no one went near him, but now there's a girl...
— In chapter thirty, Hector says that the dragon offered his blood to his daughter, a girl of only eight years old. That worried him, but watching the girl from afar, he could see the jealousy and zeal the animal had for her. Things only started to get weirder when she started to show some control over the dragon. It was then that the witch decided to deepen his research with the blood of the two, concluding that there was a very rare ability. As the months passed, he also noticed that the child and the dragon were developing in strange ways. The girl assumed an aggressive and insensitive personality, and the animal began to change its size, getting stronger whenever she ingested its blood...
"FUCK!"
"Then why didn't he stop her?" - I ask. -It is clear that the girl only got sick because she was feeding on the animal!
- Hector tried to stop her, but the bond the two shared is almost the same as I have with you... -she spoke, highlighting her four offspring. -I can sense when you are in danger, or injured, since they had a kind of telepathy.
"Did she warn you?" - I'm shocked.
- Yes. She learned to call him even though she was miles away from him. Nothing could separate those two. Whenever her eyes took on the shape of a demon, Hector knew she was connecting with him.
"Oops!"
That's when I remember what happened to me days ago.
A vision. An ingrained feeling consumes me from within taking control over everything I see. Nothing makes sense. There are several repeated images intertwined with a tingling that eats at my eyes.
“Falkor! - I call him raising my hand in the air. -What's going on?
When the eye is shocked by the change of your views that are replaced by a venomous white. That makes me look wildly for a mirror, for something that would expose my reflection, clarifying the burning in my retina.
"Benjamin..." I hesitate to ask. -When you said demon eyes, what did you really mean?
— Whites!
His answer pierces my soul, piercing me in a way that makes my legs lose their strength. I even lean on the table understanding that the "white" was the same one that had appeared in my vision and the same one that I had seen in the reflection of the water.
"Coincidence?"
I would have to be really dumb to ignore everything I'm hearing, choosing to believe in chance. The answer is very obvious and anyone who knew what I know would accept the fact that the animal in the palace is the same animal that everyone feared in this story.
— Then it says what happened afterwards, if the girl managed to return to normal?
"N-no..." he stammered in anguish.
"How not?" - I revolt. -There has to be more, it can't end like this!
— The story continues for the dragon, but ends for the girl who ends up being murdered by hunters.
"God..."
I sigh not knowing what to say.
“Some things happened after that, but if your doubts were only about their power, then the story ends there.
"What happened to him, to the dragon?" - I insist to see if he knows more.
- It disappeared! - she tells. - He was never seen again, not even by Hector who spent centuries looking for him after his daughter's death.
They don't know where he is. They don't know that he lives in the cave, nor that I know him.
"I only have two more questions…" I fixed my gaze on him. -First, like Daya's heart, it turned into a magic necklace and second, why didn't they take their blood instead of causing all this mess?
“Not everything that is taken is ours in fact. Most of the time we need to deserve to have.
"I will carry those words with me for the rest of my life!"
“When Daya died, her powers were passed on to Falkor, so he had the gift of fertility and bonding.
"Two in one!"
— Hector even fed on it when he asked his daughter to take the animal's blood, but to the surprise of both, only she had access to the powers.
"But he took the blood, didn't he?" -debate. -Why didn't it work?
“Nature is very smart, Mila. Stealing his blood and receiving his blood are two entirely different things. Even if he were tied up and even forced, it wouldn't do any good.
To understand Falkor's power, I had to understand one of the most important laws of life.
"Plant a tree and water it every day so that it will give you its most beautiful fruits."
"What did she do for him that made him trust her with his powers?"
“She wasn't afraid of him. She was the only one not interested in what he had. She was the first one to see him up close and who didn't try to kill him, who didn't try to steal his blood. She was the first human to protect him, to shield himself for his sake.
I never hurt him, I was never interested in using him to kill those who hurt me, and I never stole anything from him. I became his shield the day I found out where he lived, but I promised to keep it a secret, I remember that day Thomas beat me up for going out alone, but even so, I remained silent, choosing to be hurt, instead of explaining myself and ending up revealing his location.
The similarity between me and the girl was the care we had with the dragon. Even knowing that he would be the perfect weapon to destroy our enemies, we chose to hide and protect him.
It only reinforces the fact that I would never tell Benjamin what I know about Falkor.
"Only one person was able to tame that dragon, no one else was able to get close...
“How could you know that?
"Because he's gone, Mila!"
- This has nothing to do. Many may have already met him, but maybe they chose not to show up...
- Impossible! - he assured with complete certainty. -If there was a second person, a person who was able to gain the confidence of that animal, I guarantee you that they would not choose to remain hidden. A power like that cannot be controlled. If that had already happened, the world would be on fire.
"I'm not like that. Falkor isn't like that!"
- The collar...
— The power of fertility leads to motherhood. Whenever Daya's puppies needed her, she was there to protect them -
"As it was with Drake!" - I cut it. - You showed up...
- That!
- But how?
“I've been guarding her heart for four hundred years, at first I saw it as some kind of relic, a treasure. Then I was lucky enough to find Hector and he told me that he could bewitch the heart so that the girls could call me, like the dragons did with their mother.
"So that's why Julie was—"
- Got scared! - he finished disturbing me. -Julie was surprised when she saw the necklace, because she knows I chose to keep it, instead of showing it!
"If he's that important, why did you choose to hand him over to me?"
"I didn't just give it to you, I gave it to you!" -he said looking at my neck.
"And you're not afraid the others will see you?"
- No! - she replied without even thinking. -Remember that when I gave it to you, it was shining?
- Yes!
"At that moment I made you sole owner of it!" - she told.
"You know that if they see me using it, it won't be mine anymore, don't you?"
“They might even take it from you, but they'll never get to use it by calling me through it.
- Why not?
“Because Hector could only connect me with one person and the person I chose would be the only one who could use the magic within the crystal. If Iris, Kaila, or Julie tried to use the necklace it wouldn't work, because the necklace belongs to you and it could only be passed to other hands if its owner died.
"Are you telling me you gave me one of the most wanted objects in the world, knowing that for someone else to use your magic, they have to kill me first?"
"They can take it from you, but as long as you're alive he'll be useless!"
- You are crazy?
I was feeling like perfect bait. Any supernatural being would try to kill me just to have that cord in their hands.
"No one will touch you, Mila!" - He laughed, finding my affliction funny. -First, because not just anyone gets close to the Queen and second, there are a thousand copies of this necklace out there. He is so well known that imitations were made in an attempt to profit and fool Muggles. They know the real one disappeared four hundred years ago.
You have to be really dumb to try to steal a Queen, knowing that the chain around her neck isn't the real one.
