Revelations
Alpha Liam
I glare out into the moonlight that creeps in through the crack between the curtains as thoughts of Lexi circle in my mind. As an Alpha, we’re leaders. We’re expected to know what to do in all situations, but somehow I’m struggling to navigate through my own life. Who is my little mate? Why do I get the uneasy feeling that she isn’t who she claims to be? Who is she so deathly afraid of?
I grunt when Beta Jax’s voice cuts through my thoughts, “Alpha, you’re going to want to see this.”
“Really Jax? It’s the middle of the night. Can’t a guy just catch a break?” I huffed out through the mind link.
He chuckles, “so the rumors are true, little Miss Lexi kept you busy all night. That’s why you’re still awake and in a better than usual mood.”
I growled, “don’t start. What’s so pressing at this hour? Another rogue at the border?”
The tone in his voice changes and I quickly put together that my pack needs my attention. “Greg was right. I saw it with my own eyes.”
A chill ran down my spine at his words. It can’t be true. Any complications between the shifters and the humans could lead to catastrophic consequences. “Meet me in my office, I’ll be there in ten.”
“Oh and Alpha? Your sister went home with the human from the club again,” he says.
“Ten minutes,” I warn.
My eyes shot down to my mate. Lexi lies fast asleep on my chest, her swallow breaths matching my own. She’s evidently exhausted. Last night was something I can’t wait to do again. It quickly became impossible to keep our hands off of each other, keeping us awake for most of the night. I never thought I could care about anything so fiercely. My pack is my heart and soul, and somehow she’s managed to steal away an even bigger part of both.
I’m sure I’m in love with her and yet, I can’t tell her. Soon, her wolf will recognize me as her mate and I pray to the Moon Goddess that she’ll finally be able to break free of the confines of her old pack. Before she began to doze off to sleep, she was excited to tell me all about her favorite childhood memories. Her mother read fairy tales to her every night before bed, while her father would play tag in his wolf form until after the sun would set behind the tree line, or until her mother would scold them both.
It made me remember my own childhood. Until my father was ravaged during a rogue attack, his body was dismembered throughout the pack. Never again would this pack face such heartbreak, I swore to myself.
Lexi seemed to have had such a great childhood, filled with love and laughter. What happened, I wondered, that caused her life to be flipped upside down? I wouldn’t dare to ask, given how well she took me questioning her about her wolf earlier tonight. I have to wait, I need to give her the space to trust me.
I carefully peel her petite body off of mine and shuffle out from underneath her, careful not to wake her. It pains me to leave my little mate, especially when all that’s covering her right now is the plush white comforter sitting just under her exposed shoulders.
Pushing back her hair from her face, I placed a small kiss on her forehead. She lets out a small moan and I think my heart stops beating, fearful that I have woken her. A small smile spreads across her face, and she snuggles into my pillow, searching for my scent.
This mate bond is really something special. No wonder some shifters choose to wait for it. It’s something I never understood before Lexi. Now I’d wait a thousand lifetimes just for the chance to meet her again.
Pulling up my gray sweatpants, I made my way through the hall and towards my office, mindlinking my reckless twin sister in the process.
“Hey big bro,” she teases, based on the fact I was born just three minutes earlier. “The human again, Layla? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? What if your wolf marks him, or you unexpectedly shift in front of him?” I scolded, growing tired of her reckless games.
“Oh please, I come from an Alpha bloodline. I have more restraint than that. Plus, I broke up with him anyway,” she states, seemingly calm and content.
“Good. It’s more problems that I don’t need right now,” I explained, seeing the light shining in my office.
“Oh no big bro, what happened? The wolf juice didn’t calm your girlfriend down? From what I saw, she couldn’t keep her hands off of you”, she asks with a chuckle.
“You… you gave her wolf juice?” I asked, anger boiling in my veins.
“What was I going to do? You had Katherine riding you like a pole. If Lexi is your fated mate, you’re doing an epic job of fucking it up before she realizes it. I was just trying to loosen her up, see how the shoe fits on the other foot,” Layla explains, defending her actions and deflecting the blame back onto me.
“You actually gave her wolf juice?! Are you fucking serious? Layla, her wolf is barely there. You could have killed my mate!” I screamed through the link.
It’s as if the blood in my veins has been replaced with molten lava as heat begins to crawl up my skin like I’m on fire. Wolf juice is similar to the human version of moonshine, but it’s far more potent and laced with tiny shavings of silver. Too small to harm a wolf under regular circumstances but still strong enough to knock them off their feet. I suddenly began to understand why Lexi had no reservations tonight, surrendering to inner thoughts and caving to her deepest desires. My sister basically drugged her.
“Yeah but I didn’t,” she replies with a forced yawn. “Anyway, I’m getting tired over here. You’re welcome though, I expect my thank you card at my door in the morning!” She calls out through muffled giggles before abruptly ending the mind link.
Fucking unbelievable. Being my twin sister, Layla happens to be the only person able to turn on and off the mind link as she pleases. It’s a trick she rather enjoys using when it’s convenient for her. A twisted joke the Moon Goddess decided to bless Alpha twins with.
Walking into my office, I slumped down onto the leather chair behind the desk. I notice that my Beta Jax had already made himself comfortable on the other side of the room with a glass of whiskey gripped tightly in his hand. He stares across the room with a stupid grin pulling from the corners of his lips while he rests his ankle on his knee.
“So, how was your night, Alpha?” He asks, casually sipping on his drink as if he’s got nowhere better to be.
“It was fine,” I grunted, walking over to the bar cart and pouring myself a stiff drink.
“What? You promised not to kiss and tell?” He mocks.
I tilt the glass towards my lips and mumble, “there’s nothing to tell.”
Beta Jax laughs and his lips curl up in a big goofy grin, “Sure, there is. I saw you shove your tongue down her throat at the bar and then watched you leave together. The whole club did. So is she our Luna yet? Oh! Do we have an heir for Crescent Pack? Pregnant she wolves smell different. You know, it’s the first sign they’re expecting.”
“No and no. Layla just admitted that she gave her wolf juice, so there’s another mess that I have to clean up,” I said, feeling a searing pain in my chest that my mate wouldn’t remember anything from tonight.
I watched as Beta Jax’s eyebrows shot up, and his eyes grew wide. “She gave her wolf juice?!” He exclaimed. “She must have passed out by the time you got to your car. She couldn’t even hold a few beers.”
“That’s what I’m struggling with. She was fine. Instead, she became a spitfire. Feisty and dominant, yet she’s an omega by blood. I just can’t make sense of it.” I admitted, tossing back the rest of my drink, trying to calm my nerves.
