#565 - Chapter 565 A New Crisis
Shen City.
A drizzling rain fell throughout the day.
The continuous heavy rain of the past three or four days had finally washed away the previous scorching drought.
Restoring the world to a normal temperature.
Today, many survivors left their residences after dawn to search for supplies to survive.
Water was no longer a problem; now, everyone needed to find food!
Any food that could be eaten to fill their stomachs!
Toads, fish, tree bark, tree roots, even earthworms, cockroaches, rats, and insects were all fair game!
As long as it didn't kill you, it was a good thing!
During the drought, these animals and plants had hibernated, but when the rain came, many of the surviving flora and fauna, like humans, finally emerged and began to grow and move.
In just four or five days.
The wilderness, which had been barren due to the drought, sprouted many green shoots, and some seemingly withered trees put out new branches.
Occasional croaking could be heard from the puddles in the fields.
Life was undeniably strong.
In the face of any difficulty, life will find its way.
This benefited the survivors who ventured out.
Hungry and famished, they didn't care about anything else; they searched for everything they could see and hear.
These were their hopes for survival!
Today.
In a certain patch of wilderness on the outskirts of Shen City, two survivors were bent over, carefully searching the ground for anything they could eat.
"Oh! There's a small toad here! Not bad, not bad! Today's food is secured!"
"I just dug up a silkworm pupa, and a few wild vegetables and mushrooms! Sure enough, there's more food in the wild on rainy days!"
The two men were ragged, but they didn't bother with their appearance.
They were focused on searching for the treasures that had just emerged in the wild.
At this time, there were countless survivors like them. Hungry humans didn't care about parasites or whether something was poisonous; they would find it, cook it, and eat it.
Just as these two survivors were searching for food.
Suddenly, one of them caught sight of a figure in the corner of his eye not far away!
Taking a closer look, he realized it was a zombie!
During the drought, these creatures had disappeared somewhere to hide, and many survivors had almost forgotten about these monsters that dominated the Blue Star!
"There's a zombie coming! Let's get away from it first and then come back to search!"
The man who spotted the zombie first quickly told his companion, and then the two of them started jogging.
Based on their previous experience of encountering zombies outdoors during the day, as long as they ran fast enough, they could shake off these creatures and then come back to continue searching for food.
Zombies were much weaker during the day than at night. Normal human survivors could basically outrun them as long as they didn't encounter any accidents.
Of course, using some obstacles would be even better.
The two quickly started running in one direction, and the zombie indeed heard them and chased after them.
However, after running for a while, they quickly realized the problem!
"Damn! Why is this zombie so fast!? I'm using most of my strength, but it can still keep up! Has my physical fitness declined because I've been hiding indoors too much lately!?"
"I'm using most of my strength too! It's not that you've declined! This zombie is really running fast!"
The two survivors being chased by the zombie panted and complained to each other.
It was the first time they had encountered such a persistent zombie during the day!
After running for a while longer, the zombie not only hadn't been shaken off, but it was also getting closer!
"N-no... I can't run anymore... Let's stop and kill it!"
One of the men, seeing that his stamina was about to give out, suggested to his companion that they stop and kill the zombie.
This was naturally agreed upon by his companion, who was also about to run out of breath.
Facing a zombie head-on still carried some risk, so most survivors chose to run away the first time they saw a zombie instead of trying to kill it.
The two took out their machetes and some ropes to trip it.
Since this wasn't a concrete road, many better tricks couldn't be used.
There were no big trees or buildings around, so they could only use the simplest techniques.
The pursuing zombie didn't care about their plans.
Lacking intelligence, and having been hungry for months, it only wanted to eat these two pieces of meat in front of it as soon as possible!
The only thought emanating from every cell in its body was:
Hungry, hungry, hungry, hungry, hungry!!!
Having just come out of hiding in the past two days, it had absorbed some rainwater and regained some moisture.
But in its singular mind, there was only the concept of hunger!
More intense than ever before!
The two foods in front of it that emitted a strong "fragrance" could not escape!
The two survivors, prepared, swung the ropes with weights tied to the ends at the zombie's legs.
But this zombie was even fiercer than usual, only staggering slightly before continuing to pounce on them!
"Damn it!!!!!"
The two men's hearts tightened, and they quickly raised the backpacks hanging on their bodies to meet the zombie, intending to reduce its momentum before hacking it to death with their knives.
However.
The zombie did stop after colliding with the defenses prepared by the two of them.
But its strength was so great!
It was almost as strong as zombies usually were at night!
"Die!"
One of the men, in a moment of desperation, raised his machete and slashed at the zombie's neck!
*Thwack!*
The target didn't defend, but the machete only cut in halfway before being stopped!
Crap!
He didn't cut off its head!
Just as this survivor was running out of strength and hadn't regained his footing, and the other survivor was also struggling to resist the zombie's push.
The zombie opened its mouth and bit the wrist of the survivor holding the machete!
"Aaaaaah!!!!"
Intense pain shot into his brain, and the man looked at his bloody wrist with despair and fear.
It's over!
Everyone knew that once bitten by a zombie, it basically meant certain death.
The other man panicked even more when he saw his companion lose his mind!
Seeing that his companion was beyond saving, he actually stopped helping to resist the zombie!
What a useless teammate!!
He couldn't hold out for long with just his backpack blocking the frantic zombie.
In less than half a minute, the tireless zombie seized the opportunity when his strength was exhausted and pounced on him, biting him on the face!
"Aaaaaah!! Damn it!! I'm not willing to die like this!!"
Seeing that he had finally survived the drought, only to fall into the mouth of a zombie while searching for supplies.
He didn't even have time to eat the little toad he had just found to relieve his hunger.
He roared helplessly before his death.
Unfortunately, no one would pity them.
Since the rain started, survivors had discovered that the zombies were making a comeback while searching for supplies!
And perhaps because they were too hungry, they had almost the same combat power during the day as they used to have at night!
A new crisis was coming!
