Chapter 70: Playing Detective
KIX:
“N-No more! Please no more!”
I kicked him one last time in the face out of spite. I was pissed, and I needed something to appease my anger.
I heard some bones crack. Maybe it was his jaw. As soon as my boot collided with his face, the man was slumped in his knees. He fell unconscious.
Damn it, I wanted to kick him some more. Why did he have to lose consciousness already when I was still warming up?
“Alpha, calm yourself down,” Edril said, a bit aggravated.
I sighed in irritation. I still had a lot of aggression to burn out.
“Call me when he regains consciousness,” I told Edril.
I could hear him whine in protest, so I raised my hand, and he silenced himself.
Edril was a good beta. He knew when he should reason out with me, and he knew when he should just shut up.
I exited the dingy basement that we used as a torture chamber. I hit the buttons of my own personal elevator to the fifth floor where my training room was located.
I hit the close button multiple times as soon as I saw Edril scamper from the basement, trying to get into the lift with me.
Unfortunately, he was still able to make it although I gave a dark chuckle at the sight of the elevator door closing in several times at his outstretched arm in an attempt to stop it.
“Alpha… seriously,” he said as I continued to laugh. Seeing him scampering as if his life depended on it was priceless. I had to laugh some more.
“Well, at least you’re laughing now,” he mumbled. “For a second back there, I thought I had to send the witness to the hospital…”
I knew he had been very worried about me. Laughing like that after being mostly sad and angry for a long time also felt quite nice.
“Why did you beat him up so badly again? He had lost consciousness for three times already, plus, he had also agreed to talk…”
I shrugged my shoulders. “No reason…”
He eyed me from the side. “Are you sure? Isn’t it because he looked like the boy Miss Jade had been dating?”
I glared at Edril. Sometimes, he was also foolish enough to be sarcastic with me. It was a good thing that I didn’t mind it so long as it was only from time to time like this…
“Refresh me on what we’ve learned so far about this case,” I instructed Edril. I wasn’t angry anymore. That elevator scene was enough to flush my anger away.
“Um, okay,” Edril answered back as he fumbled at the thick notebook he used to keep notes with.
“The Red Shoes’ Curse website has no official registered IP address. Our IT experts said someone big must be behind it, judging on how it slipped away from the police’s radar. Students around the university belt knew of its existence, but the police never heard of it, and they couldn’t trace its source…”
“Don’t start from there… Just brief me up with what we have learned today.”
“Um, okay, sorry…” Again, he furiously went through his notes. Edril looked like a certified nerd when he was acting like this. I chuckled once more.
“That IT personnel, Roden Valerius, he said that a few months back, someone from the Internet contacted him for a job. It was to set up a website that would never be traced by authorities. He was given fifty percent of the payment in advance. While setting up the website, he encountered some disturbing contents. He asked to meet with the client, and his request was granted.”
Edril looked up to me when he had finished. “So far, that’s what he said. We would have already gotten the contractor’s name if someone didn’t kick him by the jaws that violently, sir…”
I sighed. That dude was pissing me off, so I couldn’t help it… He did look like that smelly rat who convinced my Jade to dump me.
Changing my mind now after I have cooled off from my anger, I hit the button up o the floor of my private suite in this condominium we used as our official pack house.
When we reached my room, I hit the shower first while Edril set up the computer and the files as I had instructed. As soon as I bathing, I sat by in front of the computer with just a towel around my waist, my hair still dripping wet with water.
I looked at the information we have so far gathered about The Red Shoes’ Curse website.
My gut was telling me someone or something big was indeed behind it. I don’t think the blog site or the murders were the works of one, simple college student despite the confession written on the site.
I sighed, massaging my temples. Ever since Jade rejected me and I accepted it, I spent my time waltzing around from one country to another. I was in Japan one day, and then Hong Kong the next, then Africa and North America, and finally back here in the Philippines to party some more…
Always though, Jade was still at the back of my mind. Whenever I had drunk more than I could bear, every girl in my eyes immediately became her.
I had saved myself for Jade exclusively for four long years, so after the rejection, I delighted myself with those countless women who looked like her in my drunken state.
When the next morning came and reality sank back in, however, I was still reminded of the mate whom I love despite the hard rejection…
So, I found myself a new distraction – I decided to solve Misha’s murder.
My end goal for assuming the alpha position was to make Jade my luna, but even though it backfired, I still have responsibilities to fulfill as the alpha. I owe it to Misha and her parents to find out the truth behind her senseless death.
While I was still busy playing detective by myself on this lovely Saturday night, I heard a beep from the intercom. I answered it absentmindedly.
“Yes, Edril? Did our prisoner wake up?”
“Yes, alpha… He’s saying some crazy stuff. I think you need to hear it.”
I donned a shirt and denim pants over my air-dried body and went down the basement once more as quickly as I could.
Finally, I would be able to find the answers tonight, or at least, I would be one step towards it.
What I heard the next few minutes sent my heart into a nervous frenzy.
“The contractor… He… They aren’t human,” the man named Roden Valerious mumbled when he saw me.
“Explain it well,” I said, clutching his collar more intensely than I wanted to.
“They… They aren’t human…”
He was too weak and frightened of me to speak. I pressed my ears closer to his lips to I could hear his whispers.
My eyes widened. I can’t believe what I just heard.
He started to say more and more things that made my blood boil.
After hearing his revelations, I wasted no time. I tore up my dress and ran in Riley’s form.
There was only one person I sought to go to – my Jade, my lovely Jade – the mate who rejected me, and the mate I still loved and longed for.
I will make sure I do everything in my power to save her from them!
