Another light in the darkness
(Sterling’s POV)
Accident? It couldn’t be that I heard something entirely different, right? She just left me some minutes ago, how on earth did she get involved in an accident? I was just at the mall sorting out the surveillance issues and then I just got off the phone with the private investigation guys only to get a call from Dr. Hailey about the disaster!
My world crumbled. I didn’t tell her that I loved her today. What if she doesn’t wake up? What if? I couldn’t control the tears flowing from my eyes as I drove like a mad man to the hospital and when I got there, it was as if time stopped and I could hear my win heart beating loudly.
The hospital was in chaos with everyone hurrying to God knows where. Hospital staffs doing what they know how to do best, different patients with different ailments walking up and down the hospital building and lastly, I noticed something weird, the paparazzi and they were rushing towards me. I don’t know how the word got out about the accident but I am sure that they were here because of that and any moment from now, the crew will definitely be here.
I managed to control myself and moved my legs in haste to the receptionist and my words after I found her were rushed “Hi, a woman was rushed in here some minutes ago. A mullatoe lady but you might not notice it because of the accident,” I looked at her and then back at the paparazzi trying to make their way to me.
“Oh yes, I remember. God’s name be praised if she survives it but she is still in surgery but you can wait at the private waiting lounge down by the hall way to your left,” the receptionist said and I nodded.
“Thanks and please, don’t let those people in and if possible tell the security to send them away and some people will come in here soon, notify me when they do, thanks,” I said and rushed off but I could still hear their faint voices eager for questions. The more steps I took to the private waiting lounge, the fainter their voices were but I could still hear their questions.
“Mr. Tyrell, tell us what happened,”
“Mr. Sterling, do you think that she will survive this accident and if she does….”
“We heard that she was pregnant, is it true?”
“Care to comment on any of the questions, sir?”
“Sir… what will happen to PHOENIX CORPS.?”
“Nobody has heard from her in months, why is that or is for the obvious reason?”
The questions just kept coming and I kept moving until I got to the lounge and slumped on a coach there waiting for any news at all but I was restless and staying there and waiting for answers wasn’t going to cut it but standing at the door to the operating room would.
I found my way to the operating room but I stood outside and kept wondering “Why her?”
I waited for what felt like eternity until the doors flung wide open and Dr. Hailey stepped out in her scrubs and I saw Phoenix being wheeled out to another room but I needed to know what was happening.
“Ah, Mr. Tyrell, I see you have been waiting here for hours now,” Dr. Hailey said, looking at me while taking the scrubs out.
“Doctor, I came here as soon as I got the call, how is she?” I asked, being a nervous wreck inside. Only one person could make my heart beat out of control.
“Well, the operation was successful but she’s still in a coma and this wasn’t an induce coma. She was like that when she came in an she decide to wake up, if she wakes up but we will do all in our power to make sure that she does come back but it’s up to her,” Dr. Hailey spoke in a more hush tone.
“What do you mean by that she won’t make it?” I asked, reality suddenly setting in.
“Mr. Tyrell, we took care of any internal bleeding, we fixed the cuts and bruises caused by shards of broken glass, we reset her broken bones but why she is in a comatose state is because she suffered a severe blow to the head and it cause a swelling in her brain and while we might have removed the fluid there, it is up to her to wake up but here are her things,” She said, holding out Phoenix belongings.
I took it from here before responding “So we just have to wait?” I bowed my heart down as I heard the odds weren’t exactly in our favors this time.
“Yes, Sterling, all we can do is wait but here, come with me, I am sure that she would have wanted you to see this first before everyone else,” Dr. Hailey said softly and I looked up to see what it was and I was expecting to get her personal belongings only for her to take me to where little new born babies are kept in an incubator and then she said, “There, you see that baby over there, that’s yours,” I looked and there it was—the bun was finally out of the oven and it was a sight to behold.
“Can I hold it?” I asked as tears rolled down my cheeks and blinding my sight.
I heard her chuckle before handing the baby over to and saying, “It’s no longer referred to as ‘It’ but a beautiful baby girl and she is as beautiful as her mother, you’ll see when she finally opens her eyes and no, you won’t be able to touch her because she was born pre-term and she will be here for another month to enable us watch her and take care of her until she is ready to be taken home but for now, just enjoy the view and know that she was born on the 27th of August,” I heard her say and then I heard retreating footsteps.
I watched the innocent human sleep peacefully in her incubator with tubes of different sizes attached to her. I don’t know how long I stood there for but I heard gasp coming from behind me but I didn’t turn to face them.
“Hey guys,” I said, in a whisper and also because I wasn’t in the mood to even chat with anyone but they were like family too so I had to respond.
“Is that….” A female voice asked behind me but I wasn’t too sure if it was Olivia or Liyah or Debby but one of them must have asked the question.
“Yeah, that is her, my daughter, our daughter,” I sniffled.
“Oh my, she is so adorable,” another voice said and moved closer to have a closer look and then I felt a light pad on my shoulder and I knew it was Denzel.
“Hey man, how are you holding up? How is she?” He asked, concern laced in his voice.
“Well, the doctor said that due to a swelling in her brain, she’s gone into a comatose state and only she has the power to get up but we have to be patient with her. So, the likelihood of her surviving is 50-50 and I don’t like it because it makes me feel helpless,” I finally turned to look at him.
“Oh man, you look like crap, let’s get you out of here,”
“But I don’t want to; I can’t leave her here,”
“Don’t be stubborn, I am pretty sure that she doesn’t want you to be here looking like a walking dead. Bro, you look like a walking corpse, come on let’s go,”
I was about moving when I remembered something that Olivia had said but in passing.
“Hey, where are Phoenix belongings?” I looked around me but couldn’t find the Zip lock bag and was about sprinting off to the lounge when Denzel stopped me, “What?” I shrugged his hand off my shoulder.
“Chill bro, look at your hand,” he said and I look and saw her belonging. I ransacked the bag looking for her phone and when I did, her phone wasn’t locked—lucky me. I searched through the recent gallery pictures and videos and we all saw everything. We all knew that she was a phony but none of us wanted to incriminate ourselves either.
Denzel and I both looked at each other and we both knew what to do even without saying a word and he went off from where the rest of us stood. Then my phone rang, disturbing my peace. I checked the caller ID and I saw who the number belonged to and I picked it up.
“Yeah, what did you find out?” I asked subtly but angry.
“Well, with the details we got from you earlier, we did our investigation and found out that she just came into the country from Haiti and that she is indeed Miss Mills mother,” the Private investigator said.
“How sure are you that she is the one?” I asked, the aura around me suddenly turned chilly.
“We asked around her old neighborhood and those who still were around that age but are still around to identify the image and they all did,” he said.
“Hmmm, do you know where she lives now?
“Yeah, we tracked her down to the Four Seasons hotel,”
“Alright then, good job but I need you to get me her room details as soon as possible.
“Okay sir,”
“Call me back when you have more,”
I didn’t want to be the bad guy here but I needed to be sure that both Brianna and this supposed mother were dealt with before Phoenix wakes up. I turned and looked at the ladies and they all looked at me.
“Let’s go to the lounge, I need to take a quick nap before it is time for me to play judge,” we all stomped out to the lounge.
