Chapter 47
Chapter 47 Title: Breaking Rules
Chapter Theme Song: Belong To You by Sabrina Claudio
[Xavier’s POV]
I stood there looking down at her in surprise. I wasn’t expecting that. For a moment, I thought that she was just spouting nonsense from getting drunk. I looked into her eyes—those large hazel eyes. She looked so vulnerable and on the verge of tears. Holy hell! She actually meant it. I felt off balance and I staggered back against the wall as the full impact of her words hit me.
My session with Luna came to the forefront of my mind. Maybe she was on to something. At first, I didn’t care that Iris had danced with that perverted old geezer. But the second I saw him put his grubby hands on her, something inside my chest split open and I saw red. Shrugging off my stupid pride, I marched over there to get what was mine. I don’t know when it had started, but I felt like she was mine. She belonged to me and Husband of the Nation or not, I’d be damned if I let anyone touch her.
Instinctively, I covered my mouth in shock as I stared down at Iris. I had been jealous, possessive and a whole host of other things. She squinted up at me, as if to bring me into focus, and she giggled. Did she think this was funny? Here I am having a personal crisis and she’s giggling. Losing her balance, she stumbled forward and looked like she was trying to walk with two left feet. She missed her step and started falling towards the ground. I leapt forward and wrapped my arms around her waist before she hit the floor. As I held her, her shoulders began to shake. Was she crying? Nervous, I hauled her up to her feet and turned her towards me. She was laughing.
I sighed in exasperation and grumbled, “I told you to procure information, Iris. Not to get drunk.”
She giggled again and looked up at me through her lashes. “Oh, Mr. President! Wait, why are you here? Never mind. Did you enjoy the show? I got the information.”
I rolled my eyes and thought, “Sure, Iris. I thoroughly enjoyed watching you being groped by that old bastard. Are you fucking kidding me?”
She stumbled against me. Cursing under my breath, I pulled her closer so that I could help her walk properly.
“Weeeeeell, ssssssirrrrrr?”
“I’m not having a discussion with you while you’re drunk. Come on now. We are leaving before a reporter sneaks in here and makes us tomorrow’s headline.”
I shuddered to think of being in the papers again. This last week was enough to drive the most patient man insane and I wasn’t patient. Besides, I didn’t want anyone to smear Iris’s name or misconstrue her position. After texting Daniel that we were leaving, I called and told my driver to meet us at the employee parking lot that was behind the hotel.
As soon as we came through the rear exit, my driver had the car door open for us. I practically had to drag Iris to the car and we stumbled inside. The driver just looked at us with a sly grin.
I glared up at him. “Get your ass in the driver’s seat. Why the hell are you just standing there?” I hissed and then slammed the door shut.
Iris snuggled up to my arm and started babbling about something that I couldn’t understand. I shook my head and moved a strand of hair that had fallen across her face.
“You’re going to pay for this,” I whispered into her ear.
She giggled and squeezed my arm as she fell asleep.

Deciding that it would be better to keep an eye on her, I took her to one of the nearby hotels that Daniel owned. I wasn’t comfortable with her being alone at home while she was in this state. Well, I guess she had Tomato. However, he was just a house robot and she needed to be watched in case she showed signs of alcohol poising. I didn’t keep up with how much she had drank at the party but she was acting as if she had consumed a whole bottle of whiskey.
Heading inside the hotel, she kept mumbling incoherent nonsense as she stumbled.
“That’s enough of that,” I muttered.
I swept her into my arms and within a few strides we reached the VIP lounge that Daniel had set aside for high ranking guests and officials. I was again reminded of how wonderful it was to have a friend who also prioritized discretion. I knew that since this was Daniel’s hotel the security was on par with what I had at headquarters, which meant that I wasn’t in any danger of being recognized. We had only waited a few minutes before the concierge handed me a key. I guess Daniel had called ahead and arranged something for us.
The room was really quiet something compared to other hotels in the area. There was a sitting area with two leather couches and a mahogany coffee table. If I would have taken the time, I’m sure that I would have seen other lavish and expensive furniture scattered about the room.
“Trust Daniel not to use restraint while decorating,” I grumbled.
Iris was still cuddled in my arms as I walked over to the king sized bed. She was still mumbling apologies about something and I furrowed my brows in confusion. Shouldn’t I be the one apologizing? I was the one responsible for her current condition. If I hadn’t sent her over to Smith, she wouldn’t have gotten drunk in the first place and I wouldn’t even be in this messy situation.
I gently placed her on the bed and moved to take off her shoes. Her eyes flew open. Looking at her, I noted that something in her eyes wasn’t quite right. I went back to my task of taking off her shoes and was startled when I heard her burst out into a harsh laugh. Confused and a little more than concerned, I placed her shoes beside the bed and came to sit next to her. Her hooded gaze unnerved me and I broke out in a sweat when I saw her lick those perfectly pink lips.
“You know, I really hate you Mr. President.”
I flinched. Where the hell did that come from?
“Why is that, Miss Young? Am I so horrible in your eyes?”
She just looked at me with her lips pressed into a firm line and her eyes were shinning with unshed tears. What now? What did I say? I swore and aggressively rubbed my face with both hands. This was so frustrating! I didn’t mean to make her cry.
Leaning forward, I brushed my finger tips over her forehead and gently asked, “What’s wrong, Iris? Are you angry that I asked you to dance with Smith? You’re okay now.”
Christ, what was I doing? I’ve never ever spoke this way to someone. I always had rules that made me retain my distance from people but this woman—she was making me break all of my rules. As I looked at the tears that were sliding down her cheeks, I felt the last bit of my resolve crumble. She scooted closer to me and placed my hand onto her wet cheek. She sniffed a couple of times and took a deep breath before looking at me. The broken look in her eyes about destroyed me.
“You, you are making me break all of my rules. I really hate feeling like this,” she whispered.
I stopped breathing for a moment. Her voice resounded in my head making me delirious with want and desire. I wanted her. I wanted to make her feel better.
Smiling at her, I asked, “What rules, Iris? What feeling are you talking about?”
She swallowed hard and I saw her gaze drop to my lips. My heart flipped.
“Why, why did you kiss me?” she asked softly.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
There were so many reasons, but I didn’t know how to voice them. Just being in her presence made me feel warm and accepted. I felt that I long as she was with me I could conquer the world if I wanted too. There were so many things, but I didn’t say anything. Instead, I just stared into those hazel eyes that bespoke of a deep sadness. She opened her mouth to say something, but then quickly closed it as if she changed her mind.
“What is it, Iris?”
“I just… I can’t seem to stop caring for you.”
She lifted her hand and traced my jaw line with her fingertips. I shivered and I felt my body respond to her light caress. The look in her eyes drew me in closer and I was only a few inches from her mouth when I heard her whisper, “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about you. About how you touched me and kissed me. It’s so frustrating.”
Her hand fell from my face and glided down to my chest. She had just reached my naval when I grabbed her wrist. My control was hanging on by a mere thread. Iris looked up at me and the warmest and most genuine smile spread across her face. My control snapped.
I pulled her into my arms and began to kiss her senseless—releasing all of my pent up emotions from the past weeks. I wanted her and now, as her hands wrapped around my neck, I knew that she wanted me. Tracing my tongue along the seam of her mouth, I breathed in the smell of her sweet perfume mixed with the scent of the spicy whiskey that she had drunk. I was lost. Groaning in need, I pulled her closer until I had her on my lap.
Her chest brushed against mine and I felt her shudder with pleasure. I moved my hand to palm her breast and she sighed against my lips. This woman drove me absolutely crazy but I wanted her—all of her. Her sassy remarks, her smiles, her caring nature… I wanted them all for myself and no one else. The thought of her being in another man’s arms was enough to make me want to burn down the whole nation. Luna was right. I was in love with Iris. I loved her with every fiber of my being.
Breaking the kiss, I laid her down on the bed and hovered over her as I imprinted this moment into my very soul. Before I leaned down to claim her lips once more, I said in a husky tone, “You aren’t the only one breaking rules, Iris.”
