“REMEMBER ME"
"PARTIAL amnesia. It means that only the recent events are affected, and she can't remember them. It might come back, but we can't say when. It depends on the patient," the doctor explained simply but clearly to Andrew, who was accompanied by his wife Lana.
"Oh, Sam," Lana said, tears streaming down her face as she hugged her spouse tightly.
Marius released a deep sigh, feeling a heavy heart. Afterward, he tried to speak, but Andrew interjected before he could do so.
"When can we bring him home, doctor?" he asked, giving Marius a sharp, warning look, implying that Marius should not interfere in the matter. It was a message Marius struggled to accept, not only because Sam was his girlfriend but also because of his deep love for her.
"I have one more thing to tell you," the doctor added.
They all continued to gaze at the man in white clothing, knowing that at that moment, they had a single goal and desire: to hear what he was about to say.
"The patient is pregnant," the doctor stated plainly.
Marius was immediately surprised by what he heard, and he understood why he had that initial reaction. However, his overwhelming joy quickly washed away any initial shock that had gripped him.
"Say that again?" Andrew asked.
"Your sister is pregnant. She's three weeks along, but don't worry. The baby is in good condition, and her situation has not been adversely affected," the doctor reassured them.
As they remained in silence, the doctor continued, "I suggest exposing the patient to things that are important to her. Family support, especially from the baby's father, will be a significant help."
Afterward, they all stayed quiet. None of them seemed inclined to speak or make any small movements. Marius seized the opportunity.
He knew that due to what had happened, and if he based it on Andrew's anger, there was a good chance he would be kept away from Sam. But he wouldn't allow that, especially given Sam's current condition. At that thought, love swiftly touched Marius' heart.
He was going to be a father. With that realization, he heaved a consecutive sigh of relief.
A mixture of emotions swirled in his heart, but the indescribable joy of what he had learned dominated. The news from the doctor had given him even more strength to fight for Sam.
"I want to be with Sam. I'll take care of her," he declared, shattering the silence.
Raised eyebrows and sharp glares met Marius as he faced Andrew. Marius expected the tone and response from Andrew, judging by the man's aura.
"Yeah? And who do you think you are to dictate what's best for my sister?" Andrew retorted, his voice cold and mocking, immediately pacified by Lana.
Andrew took a deep breath. Marius understood everything, especially Andrew's reaction. Due to his significant wrongdoing toward Sam, he decided to do what was right. He composed himself and spoke gently.
"I've made a big mistake with Sam. But I love her, and I want to make amends. I'll make things right for her and our child," he earnestly stated.
Andrew let out a sarcastic laugh. "Really? Do you think her life and my nephew or niece's life would be lacking without you?"
"Andrew, please," Lana pleaded.
"As I've said, I want to make amends with Sam. Whether you believe it or not, Andrew, I love your sister," he insisted, and he meant it wholeheartedly.
"And you actually think you can convince me with what you're saying?" Andrew retorted, followed by a faint but unyielding chuckle.
Marius cast a sad gaze upon Andrew. As his girlfriend's brother, he understood why Andrew was reacting this way. Thus, he couldn't blame him.
"Do you know that the last thing I heard from my sister before her accident was her crying and telling me how much she hates you? This, despite the fact that just a few days ago, she was telling me how much she loved you and how happy she was with you."
It felt like a giant hand had squeezed Marius's heart when he heard this.
"I know. But you don't understand everything. I hope you can give me a chance to make amends and make things right," he pleaded. "I love your sister, and I have to admit that falling in love with her wasn't part of my plan."
"So, you planned to hurt my sister?" Andrew's anger flared even more upon hearing Marius's admission, and Marius accepted that.
"Please, this isn't the right time to discuss that. We need to prioritize Sam's well-being."
At this point, Lana joined the conversation. She faced her husband and spoke gently.
"Let's talk," Lana suggested to Andrew.
Marius noticed Andrew's deep, heavy sigh, and after that, he nodded to Lana.
"We'll just talk for a moment, okay?" Lana said to Marius.
Marius nodded in response to his close friend. Then he watched them move away from where he stood. At that moment, he decided to take a seat. He felt a tremendous weight on his shoulders because of everything that was happening, and he felt like his knees might give way at any moment.
He was in that state when a nurse approached him.
"Sir, the patient is looking for a relative," she informed him.
Marius immediately stood up upon hearing that. He wasted no time and made his way to the ICU, where Sam was still located. Although the tubes had been removed from her body, she remained connected to various monitors.
"Who are you? Where is my brother?" Sam asked as he approached her.
Marius forced a smile, even though it felt like his heart was being sliced into small pieces.
As the doctor had explained, partial amnesia meant that there were parts or events in Sam's life that she had forgotten. As painful as it was to accept, it seemed like he was among those she could no longer recall.
He approached Sam and sat in the chair beside her bed. He attempted to hold her hand, but she quickly pulled away, causing him more pain.
"Who are you?" she angrily demanded. "Nurse! Didn't I tell you to call a relative? Who is this man? Get him out!"
Sam was starting to get hysterical, and at that moment, Marius couldn't help but cry. His tears weren't just a result of the deep compassion he felt for his girlfriend but also due to the anguish he was experiencing.
For the first time, Marius was unsure of what to do. Despite knowing that Sam might resist, he held her tightly. He hoped that, in this way, she would recognize him. Even if her mind had forgotten him, he hoped her heart would remember him whenever she felt his embrace.
"Please, remember me. It's me, Marius. The father of the baby you're carrying," he whispered, tears streaming down his face as he pleaded.
He heard approaching footsteps and Andrew's voice when he saw the way they were with Sam. But he paid no attention to any of that. Because at that moment, nothing was more important to him than Sam.
He continued to cry quietly while keeping a tight hold on Sam, despite her struggling. Until she finally began to calm down, and unexpectedly, she returned his embrace.
"Remember me, Sam. It's me, Marius," he said, starting to stroke her back. "Please try to find me in your heart if you can't remember or recognize me in your mind," he continued, amidst tears.
