“HIS LIFE STORY”
I remained silent for a moment after hearing Marius confess that to me. I felt pity for him. Despite his strong demeanor, it seemed unbelievable that behind his very manly aura was a story that couldn't be proudly shared.
"Is that so? I'm sorry if I asked and became pushy." Those words slipped from my lips involuntarily.
Marius just smiled before his eyes sparkled, kissing my forehead. "It's okay. I should have told you that a long time ago. So, you don't need to apologize, okay?" he gently pinched my chin.
I responded with a smile to Marius's words. And since I didn't speak, he opened his mouth again to continue what else he wanted to say.
"The truth is, my mother and father are not married. You know," Marius said, shrugging his shoulders along with a heavy sigh.
"Yeah?" I replied, strengthening his resolve.
Even if Marius didn't admit it, I felt the intense insecurity in his tone. But as the woman in his life, I knew it was my duty to give him strength and help him overcome such feelings.
"My mother was my father’s mistress," he confessed to me. "And I am the result of that sin."
As Marius spoke, I couldn't help but feel a surge of emotions. I shifted my gaze to him, realizing the weight of his revelation. I wanted to comfort him, to assure him that his past didn't define him, but words eluded me.
I reached out and gently squeezed his hand, offering silent support. At that moment, I understood the vulnerability he shared with me, and it only deepened my connection with him. Together, we faced the complexities of his past, and I was determined to stand by him, no matter what.
"What do you mean, sin?"
Honestly, I didn't like the term Marius used to describe himself. That's why my reaction was the way it was.
"Isn't that the truth? My parents' relationship was a mistake, regardless of how genuine their feelings were for each other. What's important is that my mom knew Papa was married when she got involved with him. And do you know what's heartbreaking about it?"
I stayed silent.
Not just because I wanted Marius to continue his story, but because I was too stunned by the revelations he was sharing.
"What?" I asked.
"My mother was Papa's housemaid, and he already had a legal wife. You know, the usual story where the master falls for the maid. Even though my mom was aware of the truth and the sin she was getting into, she still chose to make that mistake."
Marius's tone carried a heavy resentment. Even though I felt like I only truly met him yesterday, I found myself hurting for him. It felt like a weighty matter was pressing on my chest, making it hard for me to breathe.
"But it's still wrong to, you know, take responsibility for a mistake that wasn't really yours," I explained.
When our eyes met, I saw a glint of happiness in his dark eyes. It touched my heart deeply.
"Maybe," he said, taking one of my hands and lifting it to place a simple kiss. "But you can't blame me either, can you?" He looked straight into my eyes.
I couldn't immediately respond to what he said. I couldn't express to him that I didn't fully understand, though I empathized with his feelings.
"To be honest, your past doesn't matter much to me," I said instead, giving him a sweet smile.
In an instant, I saw Marius's eyes sparkle again. Just like before, it had a beautiful effect on me. When he didn't speak, I opened my mouth again to continue what else I wanted to say.
"I hope my memories come back soon so I won't have a hard time recognizing you again," I continued.
I didn't know if I said something wrong or if Marius didn't like it. But I couldn't ignore the fear I saw in his eyes.
"Are you okay?" I asked him, the tone of concern unmistakable.
He nodded consecutively and then stood up. "Rest now," was his response instead.
"But I'm not sleepy yet," I insisted.
I was genuinely curious about Marius's life story. Even though I noticed that he seemed uncomfortable discussing it, there was still a part of my heart that longed to hear it.
"Tell me, are you uncomfortable sharing your past with me?" At that point, I decided to ask him directly because I wanted to know the truth.
I heard Marius release a soft and gentle sigh. "Honestly, I don't know if I should be happy or embarrassed because you're interested in my life," he admitted later.
I chuckled softly at what I heard. Then, I took his hand, giving it a gentle squeeze. "I won't ask you about something I don't want to know. Besides, I wouldn't be asking if I wasn't interested in you," I said truthfully and laughed softly again.
Marius's smile widened at my response. So, he didn't make me wait any longer. He didn't keep me in suspense. He began to share things he thought I needed to know.
Here, I learned that, as he mentioned earlier, his parents committed a mistake that led to his existence. His mother didn't remarry because Marius was enough for her.
"So, you're really smart; as you mentioned, you finished your studies as a scholar." I couldn't help but boast in my voice. "Glad to hear about that. I don't have to worry about anything with our future baby," I said, gently caressing my still, flat stomach afterward.
Once again, a sweet smile appeared on Marius's lips. And again, it brought joy to my heart.
"Sam, I hope that if the time comes for your memories to return, you'll still be like this. I hope you can still be kind despite everything I've done."
Confusion enveloped my heart with what Marius said. Especially when I heard him release a sad sigh once again.
"What do you mean?" I asked him.
I couldn't help but become more curious.
Marius shook his head in succession. "You know, it's not the right time to tell you the truth. It might not be good for you."
The seriousness in Marius's tone made me stop insisting. After a while, I decided to rest. I also thought that Marius needed to rest. And that would only happen if I took the lead.
