Chapter 29 At last, the end
29. At last, the end
Nina and David eventually agreed to have the entire interview aired and signed an agreement. Marcus interrupted their handshaking and said:
- It worked with Lady Di, it worked with Matt Damon and Luciana Barroso, it worked with Julia Roberts into a beautiful woman, and off-screen too, when she married the movie cameraman. It happened with Elvis and Priscilla. It worked for Megan and William, for Zac Efron who fell in love with a waitress in a coffee shop, and even for Patrick Dempsey, and it will work for you, my dear! And since we're breaking taboos, I want to be one of the bridesmaids in the wedding along with the other women.
Everyone laughed. Nina interrupted their laughter by answering:
- I'm sorry to disappoint you in this matter, but I don't intend to get married or have children, or anything like that. I just want to stay quiet in my little corner, without too much noise... Marcus clapped his hands in protest, cocked his head to the side, turned his hands away, and said:
- Dream on, Alice! Guys, every woman's dream is to get married! - Elena and Nina replied together:
- No, it isn't! - Elena completed by saying:
- Every person's dream is to have their own money and not depend on anyone!
After a pleasant morning together, everyone said goodbye, and David and Nina went back to their hotel room. They still had a few more days in the city, and he had some work to do during his stay there. David could not forget what Nina had said about not getting married and not having children. He was waiting for the right moment to talk about it. When night once again came without delay, and the two of them were lying down to sleep, tightly clinging together like a shell, he kissed her head and asked:
- You weren't serious about never getting married, were you? And about never having children? he asked, with all the calm in his voice.
- Rich... let's go to sleep! Today has been a busy day. We'll have all the time in the world to talk about it one day. It's too soon. We haven't even moved in yet. Let's talk about it in five years, okay?
- Fine, but you were the one who said that we would talk about everything before we moved in together. Everything out in the open, remember?
- Yes, I remember. I never wanted to get married, that's true. I never had that dream, and besides, you shouldn't marry someone you don't know...
- But why?
- I know all the history of the Catholic Church since the middle ages, and also of many other churches and religions over the years. Everything that was done in the name of faith, properties taken, thousands of murders at the guillotine, hangings, people burned to death for not having the right to have their own beliefs, and this whole tradition of marriage carries a lot of the weight of the history of women's suffering. Getting married in white was the symbol that the woman had to be sure to be delivered to her "buyer", her "rapist". Brides were 13, 14 years old, or even less, of course, they would be virgins...
...For in those days, marriages were arranged by parents who gave their teenage daughters to the man who had the best dowry. And they were usually older men. And thus was born the policy that women need older men to support them. And nowadays older men are still attracted to younger girls. Many women were raped on their wedding night. Those who have researched and read about history know that now we are living in the best times of freedom, compared to the old times.
- But nowadays people choose who they want to marry. It is a festive ceremony to symbolize the union between two people who love each other. Just that, for many. A party for friends. And you don't have to get married in a church, you always have a forest, a beach, a monastery.
- True. But I'm just saying that I never thought about it, that's all. I never had that need. And even nowadays, many marriages are still maintained or are based, yes, on status and economy.
- And what about children? I want to have five children. - he said, laughing out loud when he saw her wide-eyed, catatonic stare.
- I can have as many kids as I want or adopt, but right now the only baby I want giving me trouble in bed is you, Rich?
- But do you want to have one someday? I want to have five. - David whispered, smiling at the amazing expression he gave her by repeating this. He was lying with his head on her shoulder, almost on her chest, her long hair covering his face...
- I never thought about it. I never thought about having children. It's a very big responsibility that we have to carry for the rest of our lives. Have you ever thought about being responsible for another human life? We humans can't even take care of ourselves. We are confused, we change moods, we have fears, weaknesses, we face physical difficulties in this life, where a million things happen out of our control... Parenting a child... it's like we have to be superhuman or alien. We have to be psychologists, babysitters, teachers, banks, tutors, etc. We have to be patient, sweet, and at the same time be firm, determined, and strong to protect them. And there is no way to turn them off. The children... my God... just thinking about them makes me tired... They are a lot of work! - Nina spoke slowly, almost falling asleep...
Suddenly Nina heard a soft, low murmur. It was David snoring. He fell asleep and left her talking to herself. She laughed, closed her eyes, cuddled up to him, and slept too:
- Even for all the wealth of the Arab sheiks ... - she whispered with her eyes closed ...
And so, always after hours and hours of talking, they slept together for many, many nights of their lives...
End.
