"Do come and join me," Josh said, pulling out a chair. I hesitated, but hunger won out over anger, and I sat down. I grabbed a fork and took a bite of the omelet, relishing the taste.

"This is amazing," I said.

"Oh, quite the contrary," Josh said, standing up.

It said to consult a physician for a more accurate result. That gave me hope. Maybe it was a false positive—people got those all the time.

Just then the bathroom door swung open and Joshua stood in the doorway.

I turned it around so he could see the result window.

"Yes, I'm going to have a baby," I said, which was weird to say aloud. Joshua kneeled in front of me and took my face in his hands. He leaned in and kissed me, devouring my mouth hungrily.

"Sweetie this is so great!" Joshua said.

"You're not upset?" I asked cautiously.

"Upset? Why would I be upset? If anything I'm surprised, cause you're on the pill and all—"

"Well it is only 99.9 percent effective," I interjected quickly. "I must just be that point one percent."

"I always knew you were one in a million." Joshua kissed me again with more intensity, and I melted into his arms, secretly hoping that the test was wrong.

Two weeks later I went to the doctor who told me that I was indeed four weeks pregnant. As I lay there on the exam table, looking at the tiny spot on the ultra sound monitor, the reality of the situation hit me. I was pregnant. I was going to be a mother. This should have been the happiest moment of my life, but instead it was tainted by the fact that the father of my child was not my husband, and I began to cry.

But then I realized that this didn't have to be a curse. Even though he was trying to hurt me, Josh had given me the gift of a tiny life growing inside of me, and I knew in that instant I loved this baby, regardless of its origins.

Joshua of course was over the moon when I called to tell him the news. He wanted to call everyone and tell them, but thankfully I convinced him not to erect a billboard until I was in my second trimester. As soon as I got back to work that afternoon, my assistant told me I had a phone call.

"I hear you are to be congratulated my dear," Josh's voice came over the receiver. My throat closed up. Of course Josh would have found out. Damn that doctor. I was going to have to switch hospitals.
