Chapter 46

I do not know what time it is but I slowly opened my eyes when I felt that someone is shaking my body, trying to wake me up.

"What?" I asked with a mix of annoyance because I was still sleepy. I rolled my eyes and then frowned when I saw Mason and Lautner looking at me with a worried face.

"We need to go," Mason said while holding a bag and put some clothes, food, and his cellphone in it.

"What's happening?" I asked in confusion and got up instantly, for some unknown reason my heart beats faster seeing Mason and Lautner busy putting stuff inside their bag.

"Jackson called me and he said that dad already knows where we are, we need to go before they caught us here," Mason explained and my eyes widened in shock and horror, I immediately took my bag that I brought here last night and put on my clean clothes and I also put some junk food inside since I don't know where we're going and it's better if we bring some food in case we don't find any store.

"Hurry, we need to go," Lautner said and I just nodded in response.

A minute later we got out of the tent and started walking, I was just following Mason and Lautner anxiously. We did not even bother to fold our tent.

"You need to get back to the safe house, bro, we're going to Mazatlan now," Mason said that caused Lautner to stop walking and look at Mason with a gritted teeth.

"Are you insane? I'm coming with you." Lautner replied and Mason didn't seem to like it causing him to clench his jaw.

"No, you need to go back to the safe house and hide," Mason said loudly but Lautner shook his head again rejecting the plan that Mason wanted to happen.

"Don't be stupid, bro, they'll surely catch me in the safe house and they'll think that I am you, I'll be dead meat the next time you'll see me. I'm coming with you and that's final." Lautner said authoritatively, Mason just sighed and turned his back before walking again.

"Hurry," Mason said and walked even faster. Until now my heart was still beating faster due to nervousness. It was still dark around here, it looked like it was only about three in the morning, and the wind caressing my skin was so cold but I just ignored it and tried to walk as fast as I can.

A few moments later, we suddenly heard footsteps approaching our place.

"Run." I strongly command Mason and Lautner, I am sure that the footsteps I heard are not from Frodo– the dog from last night.

Fuck! They found us.

"I thought we have two days before they'll know that we're here?" I asked Mason as we ran slowly, we don't want to make any noise as we ran so they could not track us down.

"My bad." Mason's only responded and we continued to run. I can't remember how many minutes we've been running, even though it was cold, I still can't help but sweat because of nervousness and tiredness from running.

"They're here." I heard a man shout not far from where we were, the man's voice was very familiar to me.

"Fuck! They know where we are now." I said to Mason and Lautner. I can now see the flashlights that they are using and it only means one thing, they're near to where we are. I almost fainted at the thought that Luciano's assassins would soon catch us.

"We are near to the main road, hurry," Lautner said and overtake Mason, he was now leading while Mason and I were just following him. Lautner seems to have been in this area for a long time so he knows the ins and outs of the forest. Even though it was dark, Mason, Lautner, and I still forced ourselves to run with only the light from the moon and stars guiding our path, we don't want to use our flashlight because Luciano's staff would surely catch us if we used a flashlight.

A few minutes later, we reached what Lautner said was the main road.

"Fuck! We just need a taxi to get away from here." Lautner said as I turned around and waited for Luciano's assassins to come out from the forest.

"They'll catch us guys," I said softly and I lost hope that we could still get away from Luciano's assassins. Maybe it's time that I need to accept that we failed, that I failed and I can never go back home.

"Let's keep on running," Lautner said and suddenly pulled my hand so I could do nothing but run with Mason and Lautner, we were running carrying our backpack containing clothes and foods.

After a few minutes of running in the middle of the road, hope suddenly filled my heart when we saw a car approaching in our direction. Even though the car was still a bit far from where we are standing right now, I tried to raised my hand to get the attention of whoever is inside the car.

"Give me the gun, bro." Mason suddenly said to Lautner and I frown in confusion as I look in their direction. Lautner did not hesitate to open his bag and pulled out a small gun inside his bag and handed it to Mason.

My eyes widened at what I saw.

"Why do you need the gun? Don't tell me you're planning to kill the driver?" I asked Mason nervously.

"No! Just in case things don't go as planned," Mason replied and grinned foolishly which makes me nervous because I knew he was planning something else.

Moments later, my eyes widened as I saw Mason walk towards the center of the road. My heart beats faster and faster as the car is approaching towards our direction.

"What are you doing, Mason?" I asked him with a mix of annoyed and concerned tone. What if the driver does not see him and runs over him? What is he thinking?

I was about to follow Mason to pull him but Lautner grabs my wrist and stopped me.

"What the fuck, Lautner? What if the car hit him?" I said with a worried voice. I tried to get away from his hold but he is so strong.

"Don't worry, Ashy, he knew what he's doing," Lautner said confidently.

I just closed my eyes when I saw the car approaching and the driver seemed to have no intention of stopping, I don't know if the driver saw Mason or not. A few moments later, I suddenly heard the car stop, I heaved a sigh of relief and slowly opened my eyes.

Fuck! It was close, the car was only a few inches away from Mason.

After a few seconds, a man got out of the car and cursed Mason, he was very angry but then he fell silent when Mason suddenly pointed the gun in his direction.

"What the fuck, man?" The driver said and suddenly backed away as Mason walked towards him.

"Move or I'll shoot your fucking brain," Mason said emphatically, the man did nothing but retreat.

"Get in," Mason ordered Lautner and me. Even though I was so nervous, I still hurriedly walked into the car.

When Lautner and I got inside, Mason immediately followed and hurriedly closed the door. The driver run towards the window and punched it ordering Mason to get out of the car but instead of following the driver, Mason just grinned and turned on the car's engine.

"Where are we going now?" I asked Mason in the middle of the drive.

"Mazatlan." Mason's replied sparingly, his gaze was focused on the road.

A deafening silence enveloped our surroundings until I heard a loud gunshot. I almost fainted from the shock, I immediately looked behind us and there I saw a black car behind us.

"Fuck! They're behind us." I said nervously and immediately looked at Mason to tell him to speed up but my eyes widened when I saw that his arm was bloody. He was bleeding too much.

I suddenly felt like a statue, I can't move seeing Mason's bloody arm, I don’t know what to do.

We heard another gunshot.

"Give me the gun, Mason," Lautner said but then he suddenly stopped when he saw Mason's bloody arm.

"Fuck! Mason, you're losing a lot of blood. Let me drive." Lautner said and exchanged positions with Mason. My mind went blank for a moment, I was still looking at Mason's bloody arm.

This is all my fault, this is my fault that Mason got shot in the arm, he's losing a lot of blood right now and I can't be selfish, he needs medication.

We heard a series of gunshots again, I saw Mason trying to stop the flow of blood in his arm and it broke my heart seeing him trying to save his life.

"Stop the car, Lautner," I ordered him with a determined voice, I was now lying in the car as they fired a series of guns at our car.

"No! We'll be dead meat if they caught us," Lautner replied emphatically. When I looked at Mason it was as if he was going to lose consciousness and I knew he was having a hard time right now.

"Stop the car, please. They only need me, you need to take Mason to the hospital." I said to Lautner and he suddenly looked at Mason, even though he was trying to act like a tough man right now, I knew he was scared too. I knew he loves Mason and I don't want to be selfish.

"Stop the car now, Lautner. I want you to stop the car and after I get out of here, drive into the nearest hospital." I ordered him, I could see the hesitation on Lautner's face but when he looked at Mason's almost unconscious body, he cursed and then stopped the car.

"I'm so sorry, Ashy." Lautner cried, I smiled at him with an apologetic face.

"Thank you for everything. Tell Mason that I'm forever grateful for what he has done to me." I spoke to Lautner and quickly opened the car door and got out.

Tears welled up in my eyes as I watched Lautner and Mason drive away.
