“I told you to stop calling me, no text messages.”
“Dickinson you are playing with fire. Very soon her stomach will start growing, how fucken long do you think you have, before she discovers it by herself and decides to sue us to court. Do you think this is a joke?... If you don't talk to her I will do it by myself and trust me I mean my works. You have just a weak before I go to her mom” Dr Jones speakers without breathing as Nate finally decided to pick his call this morning.
I'm seated in the parlour taking breaks fast, observing Nate strolling helplessly at the balcony with his phone in his arms, like the world was coming to an end. I wish I knew what he's talking about.
My query gaze is fixed on him. When our stares meets he smiles, I smile back but it's clear that something is worrying him and he doesn't want to share with me.
“You don't threaten me for your mistake.” Nate retort. “The only mistake I did was to keep quiet since the beginning of all this and I think that I have to fix this shit” Dr Jones offs the call.
“Shit!” he hits the wall then he gets back in. Walking to me with a smile.
“What's wrong, you have been acting weirdly.” I wonder aloud. “You haven't been eating and you know I don't like when you starve.” he kisses my forehead and he seats by me.
“You never talk about you.” I say. “Why should I when you can know me by yourself. They say beauty lays in the eyes of the beholder. You should discover me by yourself.” he starts eating.
“If you say so.” I murmur.
“What if we go on a long vacation?. Like a 9month vacation in any place of your choice. We eat, we fuck, we have fun and we work at home, then travel for seminaries?” he suddenly suggests.
“Wow!. Nine months” I nearly chock full. “My mum won't stand this, I have to see her.” “You can always call her. You won't be in prison”
“I will think about it it. I promise you nothing.” “If you are done let's leave the seminar will start in a few minutes from now.” he says.
“Relax, the seminary is next door so there is no, way we’re going to be late. You sound nervous yet you don't open up to me.” I try to make him upon up in vain.
“Baby, it's way more complicated than it seems. I will tell you when the right time comes, don't worry about me. Just take care of yourself and be happy. Your happiness brightness mine.” he perks on the cheek then sip his coffee.
We later move to the hall where the seminary is taking place. Nate is seated on the high table of fifteen important board members while I'm seated on a line of chairs down with ordinary participants.
Nate isn't concentrated he seems lost in his deepest thoughts. I have learned to know him a little bit and I'm sure I'm right. Later on, the light goes off for the projections.
The presentation is done by an old woman in her late 50s or early 60s. She looks authoritative, very classic in her dressing style and bold in her tone. She really looks successful.
After the presentation and a few hours of talking the first session is over. Nate immediately walks to me while the others go out to refresh. “I want to present you to some rich, influential men.” he tells.
“What of rich influential ladies.” the woman who did the presentation barges from behind, into our conversation.
“I hope to see you guys at the dinner date to night. The opening dinner was yesterday and none of you shown up meanwhile I was informed that you landed Paris a weak earlier.” she adds with so much authority that I get more intrigued about her personality. No one has ever spoken to Dickinson in this manner.
“Sorry, mum. I was very busy, I hard lot of things to tidy up with.” he calmly retorts.
“So busy to check on your poor mother. Nate, I'm ashamed of you, you never call or make any sign of life, are you a ghost?. Same goes for your sister. Only God knows where she is right now.” her shoulder slumps helplessly.
“And who is this young lady by you?. Why is Emily not here?. I was told you came with Emily but I can't see her here or you left her in the hotel?. I know such seminaries bore her a lot.” she asks many questions at the time.
“Mum called she’s also called Emile. Emile with ‘e’ at the end. Emile my lovely mother, don't mind her she can be a big detective at time.” Nate perks the woman’s cheeks.
She blushes with a huge smile meanwhile she was mad at him just a few seconds ago. It's kind of funny, I guess a forgiving heart is what it takes to be a mother.
“So where is Emily?.” she insists. “Mum, she didn't come because I asked for a divorce.” Nate goes straight to the point that it makes me feel so embarrassed.
“This is why you have to passe home, or call on phone to greet. You never give me updates. Such things are to be discussed at home not here.” she frowns.
“Anyways it's not too late and the room I was offered for the seminary isn't far from here. Just give me a moment to greet everyone before we leave.” she walks away then she turns back “Don't disappear!” she finally moves away still with an eye on us.
“You never told me you had a mum, talkless of a sister. I thought your parents were all dead, and that you were the only child. The last time I checked, these are the rumours spreading. around about you. Why didn't you tell me?” I scowl at him.
“You never asked, how was I to know that such details matter?. I haven't seen my sisters for years now and the last time I discussed with, my mum was last her, at this seminary.” he fold his brows in shock.
“Wow!.” my expression is unbelievable.
“We can leave now.” she moves back to us “I have changed my mind, we're going home.” she practically pulls Nate along like he’s going to disappear at any time.
We move into the car. She doesn't seem to notice me. She seat at the back with her son while I seat in front by the driver. As soon as we arrive the gateman opens the door, the parks then we walk out to the living room.
OMG, the house is a mention. It's big as hell and very luxurious. The couches of the parlour in which we are, are all white. So white that it feel like in heaven. Everywhere is perfect with very expensive decorations.
We take seats. She calls for a maid to serve us some drinks.
“I thought you said you won't attained the seminar this year, what changed your mind?” she asks, boldly breaking into the silence.
“Nothing particular.” he lies, she doesn't believe him yet she simply nods. “I guess so.”
The maid serve us drinks and cookies. Dickinson's mum later takes him upstairs to discuss. I remain seated alone in the parlour. Walk around the parlour admiring the beautiful furniture.
“Who is the young girl?” she leans with her arms on the balcony of her room, watching down the compound gate. “She’s called Emile, my new assistant at the office, and the mother of my unborn child.” he halts, he’s words doesn't leave his, mum indifferent.
“Don't be silly, Dickinson.” she barely grins “What do you mean?. The last sperm was wasted on your wife and we all know your situation.” she tries not to hurt him.
“I'm serious, mum.” he seriously instead. She knows she's son, she knows he doesn't play with sensible topics. “She’s carrying my baby I her womb, though she has no idea.” he adds.
“How?. What the hell are you talking about?.” she wonders aloud. He immediately starts narrating the who story without omitting any details.
“Wow, this is fate, it's unbelievable. It's a miracle.” she praise the heavens “Yet you messed up. You had to inform her from the moment you discovered it. Now I don't see how she will forgive you for this.” she gets thoughtful.
“There is no way around, you have to tell her before the end of your stay here in Paris. If not you might lose this opportunity of ever being a father. Don't forget she might decide to get an abortion and there is nothing you can do. So please, be smart I need to see this grandchild alive even if she decides not to forgive you. Perhaps I can help you.” she doesn't beat around the bush.
“Mum… It's not that easy. I'm waiting for the right moment to tell her.”
“Can you get it?. It's already to late, there is no right moment. The more you wait the more the situation gets worse and soon she her stomach will grow fat. How long do you think you can hit this?”
“OMG, I have been thinking about it but I don't find the right words.” he laments. “I'm sorry about this but you have to be quick. I will be downstairs with her. I hope you will come and join us soon.” she gives him a gentle tap on the shoulder before leaving.
She steps down to find me quietly seated. I was getting bored already at one moment I even thought of going upstairs to listen to their conversation.
“Emile, can you help me in the kitchen?” she suddenly, acknowledges my present, wow!. “Of course!” I immediately get up from the couch and I follow her to the kitchen.
After we finish cooking, we set the table, eat, have funny discussing she tells me stories about Nate when he was young. I can stop laughing at her detail counts.
Time for the second seminary session to pass. We don't notice the time flying and it's too late when we realise. Anyway, we have two weeks of seminary ahead of us. A day off won't harm anyone, said Nate’s mum.
We move to a room to rest while she moves to hers.
The next day we drive to the seminary. She goes to her hotel room to get ready with the makeup artists and all while we move to our room to change before the seminars start. She had no spare dresses at her place.
Later, we go to the hall for the seminary which immediately starts. Our first week of seminars and second week in Paris goes on well.
