Oh The Joy
TANNER*
It's now seven o'clock, and Blaze, Jace, and I have finally made it home to Blaze's house. We had stopped at Pizza Hut and grabbed several pizzas. Since we were late getting home and that's something we can all eat, including all of the toddlers. I glanced around and saw that Lyra and Vega were sitting in the Living room.
"How are things going with Cora and Adelaide?" I asked Vega who had noticed that I had walked over.
"The girls are doing great. Lyra brought them home, and I stayed with Kaysen to help her finish packing. Kaysen hasn't been feeling well; she checked on Cora and went to bed. She and her mother had quite the falling out. Lyra felt it was best to go ahead and bring Cora here," Vega said.
"I thought if you both went instead of me, things would go smoothly, but I guess I was wrong. I guess now you both see why I needed to get Kaysen and Cora out of there," I said as I turned to walk towards the guest room to check on Kaysen.
"Well, her mom was screaming about getting a Lawyer and taking Cora away at one point. Kaysen thought I had left, but I had lingered outside of the doorway for a moment. I think you may need to talk to either your dad or your uncle about what is going on in case her mom does happen to get a lawyer. She's messing with the wrong family. I hope she doesn't take things that far," Vega said.
I ran my fingers down my face and scratched the stubble of my goatee in frustration. I can't understand why her mother was being so difficult. Other than staying the night that one night I have done nothing but be gentlemanly and spoil both Cora and Kaysen in front of them. I have not given them any real cause not to like me. This was all absolute craziness.
"I'll be right back. I'm going to check on Kaysen and see if she would like to come out and get some pizza. I'm sure she is upset by what happened at her parent's house and may also be a little embarrassed. Her mother has a way with words and treats her like a child. I told her mom the other morning she needed to stop treating Kaysen that way, but I guess she's going to learn the hard way," I said as I walked back to the guest room.
When I arrived, Kaysen was curled up into a ball and snoring quietly. I wasn't sure if I should wake her up or not, but I knew that she needed to eat for herself and the babies. I'm not sure how long ago Kaysen and Vega had arrived, but I knew it had to have been at least two hours or more. I crawled in behind her and ran my hands through Kaysen's hair, and she mumbled something incoherently at me.
"Babe, we came baring pizza, and Vega and Lyra are worried about you. Do you think you could come out and eat?" I asked Kaysen, and I nuzzled her neck with my nose.
"I haven't had lunch or anything, so that would probably be good, and I need to take my prenatal vitamins. Tanner, I'm completely mortified by how my mother acted today, and I'm scared that my mom will try and take Cora away from me. I don't know what I would do if that were to happen," Kaysen said as she turned to face me.
"Vega told me a little bit about what had happened with your mom. Losing Cora isn't something you should worry about. My family is full of Lawyers; for one, my dad and Blaze's dad are two of those. Have you ever heard of the Cunningham Law Firm? Blaze, Jace, and my cousins Connor and Wade were supposed to become Lawyers ourselves, and we didn't. You and Cora are safe here ok; none of us will let anything happen to either one of you. Come out and eat and stop worrying about your mother," I said as I got up and helped Kaysen out of bed.
"I think I need to get an appointment to see the doctor sooner. My stomach's been in knots since I found out I was pregnant on Tuesday, and the antinausea medication she gave me isn't working. Maybe it's all the stress I have been under this week. I'm glad to be here and away from my mother. I can't seem to do anything right anymore. I feel a weight has been lifted off of me. I want to make sure the babies are ok though, if that makes any sense," Kaysen said as we walked down the hall to the playroom to gather all of the kids.
"I understand; maybe you could call and see if you could get in on Monday," I said as I looked in on all of the kids playing in the playroom.
"Uncle T," all the kids screamed and ran up to hug me. Cora followed behind everyone and waited her turn to hug me as well.
"Who all want's pizza?" I asked excitedly as all of the kids took off down the hallway. I picked up baby Jonah along the way.
***MONDAY MORNING***
The rest of the weekend had gone off with a hitch. No drama and Kaysen could relax and get to know Vega and Lyra better. I watched them all as they went to church and had picked up some take-out for everyone and had it ready for them once they arrived home from church. Cora had run up to me excited by going to a new church and told me I needed to go next time. So I've decided I will give it a chance next Sunday. I can't say no to that cutie. I can't wait until next weekend for my dad and Crystal to meet Kaysen and Cora. My dad and Crystal married two years ago, just after Blaze and Lyra had gotten married. Crystal is in her late thirties, and it's to my understanding that she and my dad are trying for a baby. So who knows, I might be a big brother and a dad at the same time.
Kaysen was able to get an appointment with the doctor, and I had just picked her up from Blaze's house, and we are heading to the doctor now. Kaysen has felt better the last couple of days but still wanted to see the doctor anyway. I'm pretty excited because I'll be able to hear the baby's heartbeats, and maybe I would be lucky, and the doctor would do another ultrasound. I'll request one and let them know that I will pay extra. I wouldn't miss this for the world.

"Hello there, I'm Dr. Ryan. I'm going to take a guess and say that you are the father. Am I correct?" Dr. Ryan asked as she shook my hand.
"Yes, ma'am. I am Tanner Cunningham. I had gone on a vacation and ran into Kaysen last week. I'm excited that I'm going to be a dad soon," I said with a wide smile on my face. Kaysen beamed at me, and I could feel the love coming from her.
"Well, you to certainly look like a happy couple now. I'm so glad to see that. Tanner, Kaysen is going to need you over the next seven months. I was hoping you could make sure that she doesn't do any heavy lifting. Until she reaches month four, I don't want her spending more than thirty minutes at a time on her feet. We need to make sure the babies are safe until after the depo shot has made its way out of her system,"
"Don't get embarrassed by me asking this, Kaysen. Can we have sex, Dr. Ryan?" I asked quickly.
"Yes, that should be fine, but nothing too strenuous until after the fourth month. Just be gentle with Kaysen for a while ok," Dr. Ryan said.
"OK, thank you. Also, I missed the last ultrasound. Is there any way we could get another one," I asked?
"Not today, but next week during Kaysen's scheduled check-up, I will. However, I'll be getting the Doppler out so that you can hear the heartbeats. We may be able to get an idea of what the babies maybe, but we won't find out for sure until the fifth month. Sometimes when a baby has a slower heart rate, they are usually boys, and girls tend to have a higher heart rate. Can I ask why you came in to see me a week early, Kaysen?" Dr. Ryan asked as she helped Kaysen to lay down on the bed and lifted her shirt, then retrieved the heart, Doppler.
"I have encountered a lot of stress this week concerning my mother and moving out. It's a long story, but the anti-nausea medication you prescribed me hasn't been helping. I've been throwing up a lot and having difficulty keeping anything down. Is there something else you may could give me?" Kaysen asked Dr. Ryan.
"Yes indeed, don't worry, I'll prescribe you something else. Ok, let's see if we can find the baby's heartbeats now," Dr. Ryan said as she placed the Doppler to Kaysen's belly.
I had to fight from jumping up in excitement when I heard the first baby's heartbeat. Kaysen and I glanced happily at one another, and Kaysen grabbed my hand and squeezed it slightly.
"It's hard to tell, but I would have to say that baby A may be a bit," Dr. Ryan said and then went in search of the other baby's heartbeats.
"Baby b is Maybe a girl, but as I said, we won't know for sure for another three months. Your babies have a strong heartbeat, though, so that is something to celebrate," Dr. Ryan said.
"Thank you, Dr. Ryan," I said as I helped Kaysen up from the bed.
"Here is your prescription; if that doesn't help, give me a call, ok. Also, Ginger and Saltine's are a great help as well. I will see you both next week. Take care, Kaysen," Dr. Ryan said as she walked out the door.
"It's the most fantastic thing hearing the baby's heartbeats, isn't it," Kaysen said as we walked out of the clinic.
"Yes, babe, it truly is," I said.
