Chapter 54: A New Support
~ Cameron/Constantine ~
Two guards sent me a message to let me know Lisa came to meet Nate. I was relieved to know that. Maybe Lisa was drugged. It was possible the drug effect was worn-off already. It made sense because she was weird when I met her in her pack. The problem now was how to locate Anna. I already asked around, but none dared to tell me where my father placed her.
Where should I begin? Could it be that Father sent Anna somewhere far from here? It’s the most reasonable. Yet the question was still the same: where must I search for her? Another question was, how could I find her? If I tried to find her, my father might send her away.
Then somehow I remembered Jack’s woman. She was Anna’s friend in the lousy house. I contacted Jack immediately through the mind link. ‘Bro, do you want to meet your woman?’
‘Huh? Melanie?’
‘Who else? Unless you have already had a change of heart and want someone else.’
Jack chuckled. ‘I can’t ever win when I debate with you. Yes, sure, I want to meet with the girl.’
‘Come to my house now. I want to visit her.’
‘Wait! Don’t tell me you want her too! I won’t let you have her.’
‘Dummy! I don’t want her. It’s about my woman, Anna.’
‘What about her?’ Jack asked.
‘Father arrested her, and I didn’t know where I should search her.’
‘I see. I will come right away.’
In a few minutes, Jack was already in my house. He sat on the couch and tapped his foot on the floor. "So?"
"So?"
"When will we go? I want to meet Mel now."
I stared at my brother for a few seconds. "Are you serious with her?"
"Why do you ask?"
"If you are serious about her, I will ask Father to match you with her. What do you think?"
Jack stroked his nape and grinned. His grin made him look younger than his age. But Jack was a carefree one, as he didn’t have responsibility for the pack.
I let out a heavy breath. "Well? Yes or no?" I asked him again.
"I like Melanie, but I want to have her my way. I don’t want Father to interfere with my business."
"What if Father matches you with another she-wolf? What will you do?"
"As he did to you?" Jack shrugged. "I’m not like you, Cam. If Father does that to me, I will leave the pack."
"But it’s our pack, and he’s our father."
"True, but I’m not you. I don’t have any responsibility to lead the pack. I will chase my happiness. If Father doesn’t get me, I won’t force him. But I won’t sacrifice my life for him or the pack. It’s not worth it."
"Jack, you don’t understand. Our father is our pack’s Alpha. It’s his responsibility to take care of our pack."
"True, but what is the price he must pay? He sacrificed you and your happiness. I know Father has prepared you to be his successor. That’s why you will keep thinking about the pack and the obligation. But the truth is you owe him nothing."
I walked to the window and looked outside through it. Jack had his point, but I knew there was a price I must pay to be the next Alpha. Compromise and sacrifice, I took a deep breath, I couldn’t throw away everything because of love. How could I be happy when I knew I had neglected my duty?
Then I let out a heavy sigh. "Let’s go to the Omegas’ house."
"Sure!" We walked there, as it wasn’t far from my house. But midway, Jack stopped. "Why did you want me to come with you?"
"Because I need your help to persuade Melanie to do something for me."
"Hm? Finding Anna?"
I nodded. I didn’t know where I should search for her. It was impossible Father placed her in his house, wasn’t it?
"You can ask her yourself. If she sees me, she may not be inclined to help you." Jack shrugged.
"She likes you. I want you two to become mates soon."
Jack chuckled and touched his nape. "I don’t know if you have been a matchmaker too now."
"You are my brother, and I want the best for you. If we can make you have Melanie soon, at least one of us will be happy."
"Thanks, Bro!"
We talked no more. Arriving at the Omegas’ house, Jack knocked on the door. An Omega opened the door. Her eyes widened to see Jack and then me. She bowed to us. "Zeta Jack, Beta Cameron! What a pleasant surprise!"
"Is Melanie here?" Jack asked.
"Uh, y-yes! I will call her."
The Omega ran inside, and we walked to the living room. The living room was small and shabby. I made a mental note to have our Epsilon renovate the Omegas’ house once I had become the Alpha. I would remove these Omegas to a better house temporarily and move them after the renovation had been finished.
Melanie strolled and gaped when she saw Jack. Her face blushed, and she glanced back to see her friend. Yet her friend didn’t follow her. Melanie walked to the couch. When she saw me, she smiled. "Beta Cameron, what a surprise!"
"Melanie, Cam needs your help," Jack said immediately. He bent his body forward and whispered, "My father arrested Anna, and we need your help."
"What?!" Melanie’s face was pale, and she covered her mouth with both hands. "I thought she lived with you, Beta Cameron. I thought she was happy with you, as she didn’t return to the Omegas’ house anymore."
I nodded. "For a while, Anna lived with me." Then I added in a low voice, "But then my father caught her. I don’t know where she is now."
"I will do anything I can to help you. What should I do?" Melanie asked.
"I want you to look around and see if there are any unusual things. But you can’t let anyone else know about this," I said.
"I understand, Beta. I will do my best to find information for you."
I nodded. "Thank you, Melanie. If you find anything, meet Jack and report to him everything you know."
Melanie’s eyebrows arched. "Why him? Can’t I report to you directly?"
"No. If you keep looking for me, my father may be suspicious. It’s safer if you meet with Jack than me."
Melanie bit her lower lip. "I see …."
"I want Jack to promise me something. You won’t bully Melanie again, will you?"
Jack shrugged. "It depends." I elbowed his ribs, and he groaned. "Cam!"
"You have his words, Melanie. Thank you so much for helping me."
Melanie smiled and bowed her head. "It’s a pleasure, Beta Cameron. Anna is my best friend. If I knew she’s missing, no need for you to ask me. I will surely search for her."
