Chapter 10
Chapter 10
"What?" The girl looked surprised at my statement, her face reflecting astonishment. I raised an eyebrow, finding it difficult to believe that she was so taken aback by my need for a job requirement.
"I require a certain document for a job, but unfortunately, I don't possess any," I explained simply. "It's just a simple requirement. It's just your birth certificate, biodata, or anything that tells your identity," she frowned, I almost rolled my eyes because, for her, it seemed like an easy task, but for me, it was incredibly challenging. I lacked a birth certificate or any other damn record she mentioned.
"As I mentioned before, I don't have any," I responded, feeling a touch of impatience creeping in. "I had no idea there could be someone without a birth certificate!" she expressed shock. I could see the same astonishment mirrored on her face as if she had encountered a rare occurrence. Well, there are many of us without birth certificates, especially in the Urzua Kingdom. "Now you know," I replied nonchalantly.
She shook her head disapprovingly. "What is your name?" she asked while retrieving a notebook and pen. "Eli," I answered. "I need your full name," she shook her head at me. I was taken aback. Revealing my full name could potentially put me at risk if my brother were to track me down. It was a risk I couldn't afford to take. "I don't have a full name," I said simply.
Her eyebrows furrowed even more, and she stared at me as if I were the most peculiar person she had ever encountered. "That's impossible! Everyone has a full name!" she exclaimed. I snorted, I am not a regular human but rather a she-wolf. "I've already told you, I don't have one," I reiterated. She shook her head, her previously confused expression turning into one of concern.
"Where did you come from? You are so unusual!" she mumbled. Taking a deep breath, she looked at me intently. "In that case, I have no choice but to create a fictitious identity and seek out someone who can provide a fake birth certificate," she declared. I nodded eagerly, filled with a newfound sense of hope. Finally, I heard words that gave me hope for a solution!
"Where is it?" I asked, my determination evident. She put away the notebook and pen she had taken out earlier, placing them back in her bag, and motioned for me to follow her. "This is the only way for you to obtain a birth certificate," she explained. I nodded in understanding, realizing how desperately I needed it.
"That works for me," I replied. "By the way, my name is Regine," she introduced herself.
We walked a considerable distance before reaching a small house. Regine opened the creaky gate as we were greeted by a loud bark from a dog, but she paid it no mind, so I followed suit and entered the gate.
"Justin?" Regine called out. She knocked on the worn wooden door, and a man emerged. He appeared... well, I don't want to judge, but he seemed unkempt. It seemed like he hadn't showered in a week due to his disheveled appearance. The man appeared to be around the same age as Troy, but Troy was undeniably more muscular and attractive. This man wore glasses, had untidy hair that looked hadn't been touched by shampoo in ages, a neglected beard, and emanated an unpleasant odor.
"What are you doing here, Regine?" the man inquired. "I have a friend with me who needs your assistance," Regine replied. The man glanced at me, and despite the pungent smell, I managed to smile. Goodness! This man desperately needs a bath!
"I'm Eli," I introduced myself. He stared at me for a moment before shifting his gaze back to Regine. "Just make sure I'll be compensated generously," he said to her. Regine grinned back at him. "Of course, I will pay you. You know I always keep my promises, right?" I wasn't sure if Regine's words held true or if she was merely trying to deceive this man. He scoffed and swung the door open wide for us.
"Thank you, Justin!" Regine said enthusiastically. As I trailed behind Regine, I felt a wave of dizziness from the disarray in Justin's house. If Troy's house was already a mess, it seemed like this one would win the prize. This place is even messier than Troy's! Goodness! Are people truly like this in Tyreese? Don't they know how to keep their homes clean? I can't believe it!
Justin opened yet another door, and what I saw inside the room left me astonished. The space was filled with computers, wires, and various other technological gadgets. Now I understand why Justin looks the way he does. This is the reason! He's a nerd and he spend most of his time in this room!
After a while, Regine explained my situation to Justin, and he quickly grasped what was needed. "In order for you to establish an identity, I will use the names of individuals who have been missing for a long time and have never been found," Justin explained while rummaging through his cluttered cabinet, searching for something. Find someone who has been missing for so long?
"You're Eli, right?" he asked. I nodded in confirmation. After a while, he stopped searching and pulled out a folder. He opened it before me, revealing a biography of a woman. "This is Elyse Torres, 25 years old. She completed high school and worked as an office clerk. Her parents died in an accident, and around five years ago, shortly after her parents passing, she vanished into thin air. No trace of her has been found, and she has been declared a missing person for several years now," Justin explained. I gazed at the photograph of Elyse Torres. She was attractive, though not as much as myself, but she possessed a certain charm.
"Do you mean that from this moment forward, I will be living as Elyse Torres?" I asked, seeking confirmation. Justin nodded in response. "Yes," he said. I nodded, and gradually everything started to make sense. This would make things easier for me. If I lived as Elyse Torres, my brother wouldn't be able to find me easily, right? From now on, I wouldn't be Princess Elisaria Foster of Urzua Kingdom; I would be Elyse Torres, a citizen of Tyreese. Internally, I couldn't help but smile.
"Alright then," I said. Justin nodded and organized the documents. I turned to look at Regine. "Thank you for this," I expressed my gratitude. Despite our rocky start earlier, I was grateful to have met her. If it weren't for her, I still wouldn't have any idea how to obtain the requirements Troy mentioned last night!
"It's nothing. I'm just returning the favor for helping me earlier," she responded nonchalantly. I smiled.
A wide grin spread across my face as I examined what Justin had given me. I now possess a birth certificate and identification cards. Regine emphasized the importance of IDs in this place, so I knew I had to keep them safe. "Wait here, I'll just settle the payment with Justin," Regine informed me, winking before leading Justin into another room of the house. Now... it seemed quite suspicious.
Before I could dwell on it further, a paper on Justin's desk caught my attention. Frowning, I read the label on the folder cover. "Identity claimed," I muttered. Wait... this was the same phrase he had written on Elyse Torres' folder earlier when he handed me her identity. That could only mean these were folders of individuals whose identities had been assumed, and Justin had been paid to facilitate it. I knew it was illegal, but it was undeniably amazing!
I couldn't resist opening the folders, especially as Justin and Regine took an unusually long time to emerge from the room. I even heard a crash from inside, but I brushed it off and focused my attention on the folders until I came across one that caught my eye. I don't know why, but maybe it was because it had the same name as...
"Troy... Carter..." I murmured the name. My heart skipped a beat. He... shared the same name as the Troy I knew. I stared at the picture and saw that it portrayed a middle-aged man. It couldn't be possible for Troy to be here, assuming a fake identity, right? Why would he do that? He wasn't like me, someone who came from the werewolf's kingdom escaped, and started a new life here. After all, there are numerous people out there named Troy.
"Let's go, Eli," I hurriedly closed the folder upon hearing Regine's voice. I also noticed Justin standing behind her, looking rather sweaty. My gaze shifted to Regine, and I suddenly realized that she too was perspiring. Wait... could it be possible that the boyfriend Regine had referred to was... Justin?
