Chapter 91
Our Shadow Wolves pack was a small pack of wolves that were known for their stealth, of hiding in the shadows to track down their enemies. There were approximately 200 wolves who were a part of our pack, which included mates and pups as well.
It was not uncommon for our pack to be hired to track down some of the most wanted criminals and rogues. It was our skills that were admired by other packs, and we always kept things anonymous.
Even our location seemed hidden in the shadows. How the rogues found us that horrible night they slaughtered my pack; I do not know. It was a night that none of the pack was being hired to do any scouting. Because most packs were ignorant as to where we were, or that we weren't just a fairy tale, we never had to have heavy guards around us.
The rogues came in while we were all sleeping. My mother had just given birth to my sister just a short time before they arrived. There was a crib in my sister's room in which she was placed to sleep. The dream was going along well, until I suddenly saw the moon goddess come into my dream and tell me to wake up! I was told by the moon goddess that I had to go grab my sister and run south as soon as possible. When I awoke, I heard cries and screaming all around me. I jumped out of bed and ran. As we were being attacked, I knew I was going to have to use the stealth skills my father had taught me as we were in danger.
In silence, I entered my sister's room, and I was handed my sister by the moon goddess. Hurry, she said, go south as soon as possible. In a flash, the moon goddess vanished like she had never existed, as if she had been merely a dream. In fact, the moon goddess did mention that my sister was special. She would be the next White Wolf that is summoned only to our kind in times of need. It was at that moment that I put my sister in a picnic basket, turned into my wolf, and began running towards the woods.
As I rushed out to the woods, I saw a rogue rip off my father's head, and then turn around and stab my mother who was sobbing. My heart rate shot up and the pack's connection broke, as the Alpha of the pack had died without naming a successor to take his place. It was the moon goddess again that I heard in my mind. "Go! Now, go!” That is when I turned and ran away from the pack until I had no clue where I was.
In my position as a kid, what can I do to take care of my sister? In response to my question, the moon goddess did not answer me. I was only a pup myself and to take care of an infant was a whole new experience for me. In fact, I did not even have a clue how to change a diaper when I was a child.
My body was tired, so I decided we needed to find a cave to sleep in. Sniffing around, I found the smell of water. My nose led me to a lake with waterfalls. That's it, there should be a cave behind the waterfalls. Trying to get to the cave behind the waterfalls, I ran as fast as I could. Keeping my sister warm was my main reason for staying in wolf form.
My sister began wailing as I was sleeping, and I wondered how a small pup could have such powerful lungs that could raise such a loud cry. It wasn't until I smelled her that I realized she was in the process of rotting from the inside out. Upon picking her up, I notice that her diaper is leaking. I moan and I pull out the plastic that has been holding this nasty stuff in for so long. Taking her and that plastic bag of poop to the lake seemed like a good idea. Since I did not want the diaper to be in a place where rogues could smell it and find out where we were, I dumped it in the lake.
It was then that I got some leaves that I put in the lake and washed my sister with them, washing away that smelly stuff from her with the leaves. The clothes that she was wearing had been ruined, and now I had to switch back to my human form to wash her. The fact that I was naked was evident, and I did not have the time to bring a change of clothes with me. As soon as I put my sister back in the basket, I covered the private parts of her body with leaves. I made sure that the leaves were not covered in any bugs. After that, I took a napkin from the picnic basket and draped her with it. My body shifting into my wolf form, I hurried once again to stay on track with the directions the moon goddess had given me.
During everything I had been doing all day, my sister started bawling again, and I could feel my stomach growl as well. To have something to eat, I decided to catch a rabbit. Despite my best efforts, I was unable to get my sister to eat any of it. When I sat down, I realized that for the first time since I had run from the pack, I was crying. There was nothing I could do, everything was catching up to me, and each tear I shed was a cry of sorrow for the loss of my family, my pack, and a cry of self-pity. My only desire was to snuggle into a warm bed with food to eat, and to be able to sleep. My baby sister needs to be cared for by an adult who can handle her.
It was necessary for me to stop at the next pack. This had to be at night, as it would be necessary for me to sneak in and place my sister on the steps at the packhouse. By doing this, they will be able to find someone who will love her and take care of her. There was no way I was willing to let them see me, since they might think I am a rogue, and technically I am a rogue now. There is no longer a pack link for my pack, and I do not share a pack link with anyone. My heart wanted to break again, but I had to remind myself that I am an Alpha wolf, and I must remain strong regardless of what happens.
Once I reached the next pack, I was able to use my stealth to avoid all the warrior guards. Our pack knew how to hide our scent without magic. That is what I did. I carefully looked around for what might be the packhouse and when I found it. I carefully placed my sister in the basket on the steps. Crying I give her mothers necklace around her neck, I promised her, if I couldn’t find her, that I would become wealthy and every building I would know would have the shadow wolf crest that is the emblem on this necklace. I licked her face and turned back into the woods heading south to the next human village: **Note: I will be writing a book in the future on his sister and how she grew up**
