Chapter 71 PASTOR'S MEETING
Sobrina had traveled briefly to her parent's, after the reunion, and had decided to visit Pastor Melvin on returning to the University.
It was well over 8pm that evening, when she texted him about her intention. "I'll be coming to see you this evening, honeysuckle. I've missed you terribly since I traveled", she had texted. And had left her place few minutes after, when he didn't respond to the text. It was his custom since over the years, to use silence as acknowledgement.
She didn't find him at his place and left in frustration, but after she'd slipped a love letter she'd written him under the door.
On her way back to her own place, she was surprised to find Pastor Melvin standing by the side of the road, just few miles away from his house, with Miraya. She walked over to them.
"Pastor Melvin, good evening sir. Good evening, Pastor Miraya", she greeted.
"Good evening Sobrina. Pastor Davies asked after you", Miraya had murmured her response, but it was Pastor Melvin who spoke. It turned out that they were returning from a Pastor's Meeting, held at Pastor Davies' place, located just a few miles away.
"Asking who exactly after me?", Sobrina questioned, looking from Pastor Melvin to Miraya, who had turned her back to her in trying to hide her displeasure at her presence.
Pastor Melvin stopped a motorcyclist, and attempted to lead Miraya towards him, without responding to the question.
"I'm just coming from your place, Pastor Melvin. We need to talk", Sobrina snapped in anger, and to voice the obvious in front of Miraya.
Sobrina didn't understand what Miraya was doing, this close to her lover's house, and by that time of the night. Pastor Melvin made a sign that said he would call her - where Miraya could see it - and they continued to the motorcycle, while Sobrina left for her own place. He never called but Pastor Davies did.
"Sobrina what were you doing at Melvin's house this evening?", He barked. Sobrina kept silent in shock. She hadn't been told that accountability meant the relationship was halted, or that she couldn't visit her man whenever she wanted. That he swatted her with a broom didn't also mean that the relationship was over, since he never said so.
"Did you hear me?", Pastor Davies questioned.
"Yes sir",
"Make sure you come and see me in the morning", he ordered.
Sobrina went to his place the next morning. It took a few minutes before Pastor Davies could come outside his house to see her.
He was clutching his smart phone, and he had an ear-piece in one ear, connected to the phone.
It had happened that Miraya had made calls - in tears - last night, after what she had witnessed. Pastor Davies was on the phone with her brother - Pastor Sheddy - trying to prove he was the one actually dating Sobrina, presently. Pastor Sheddy had requested to listen in on their meeting that morning.
"Good morning Pastor", Sobrina greeted.
"Good morning Sobrina", Pastor Davies responded, "why did you go to Melvin's house last night?",
"I missed him. I had just returned from home", Sobrina boldly responded.
"You didn't even come to see me", Pastor Davies had actually asked after Sobrina in the presence of Miraya and the other pastors, in trying to make it look like he had actually started dating her. All for the benefit of Miraya.
"I texted you", she responded, and she had.
"You also texted him",
"Is that a problem?",
"Do you know how that text entered his cell phone?",
"Was it through your cell phone?", Sobrina questioned in honest confusion. She didn't understand why they were discussing this, but it had actually happened that Miraya had been going through Pastor Melvin's cell phone, before the arrival of the text message. The lady had been mad at every one, including Pastor Davies, and they had done everything to reassure her.
"Stop going to his house", Pastor Davies gently cautioned.
"I saw him close to his house last night with Pastor Miraya", Sobrina reported.
"The one you said gave you a confusing word some time ago?", Pastor Davies was pretending he didn't quite know who Miraya was.
"Yes",
"What was it she said exactly?",
"I don't remember exactly what the prophesy was, because she had first asked me if I was feeling jealous of my mates",
"Jealous of your mates?",
"Yes. She said, 'do you look at your mates and feel jealous?', I said, 'no'. Then she asked, 'are you asking God why you'?", Sobrina recounted, amusedly.
"Wow, well you should know people mistake how they are feeling in themselves for what the Holy Spirit is saying to someone else", Pastor Davies had changed the conversation, unknowing to Sobrina.
"Had you guys met before then?", he questioned.
"Yes. She had been with Pastor Melvin at KFC, the day I had gone to tell him that I was getting married", Sobrina innocently responded.
"That is quite a word she gave you",
"Well, she doesn't know who I am", Sobrina responded.
"Stop going to his house, okay?",
"Alright. He told me that he'll be moving out soon anyways", Sobrina agreed, thinking he was trying to keep them from falling into sin.
"How was your trip?", Pastor Davies questioned, deciding to change the topic.
"It was good", and the conversation was over.
Sobrina had no idea that Pastor Melvin and Miraya were sleeping together, as pre-engaged couple. They had been having premarital sex - as boyfriend and girlfriend - earlier before the whole trouble began, but had stopped after Pastor Melvin seemingly got pre-engaged to Sobrina. Now, they had resumed it incessantly and in support of Pastor Davies, who had advised that it would help them solidify their relationship.
They'd been on the way to his house that night, when they saw Sobrina returning from there. Miraya had wanted to pass the night at Pastor Melvin's as usual, hoping for a hot makeup sex, after the disturbing text message she had intercepted in his phone. But she had to go, because an outsider - Sobrina - had seen them, and there was no telling what this particular outsider could do, if she discovered the secret - a secret known only to the members of the underside of the church. It was a sin and detrimental to the church for unmarried couple to be sleeping together. They planned to be more careful, now that Sobrina was back from her travel.
Pastor Melvin actually knew Sobrina was going to visit him that night, because he had not responded to her text. He had been hoping that they would already be in his house, before her arrival. So that Miraya could be the one to answer the door. It would have excited him to see how Sobrina would have reacted. He had hoped that she would slump and die from a heart attack, or gone back to her own place to commit suicide.
Was God on Sobrina's side?
